Hornets v Terriers 16-Dec-2017 - theo_luddite - 13-12-2017 ![]() ![]() Watford v Town
Prima Donna League Saturday (there's a novelty) 16/Nov/2017 Kick Off 15:00 (there's another novelty) T'road on t'way to t'Vicars 'ouse WD18 0ER shamelessly robbed from wiki, transfermarkt, bbc and other places on t'interweb with a few views and rubbish of me own
Town trundle down the M1 on Saturday looking for a win, nay a point, nay a goal on the road fo the first time since we drew at Burnalee and scored at Palace. Now we might have optimistically put this place down as somewhere to pick up points back in August, and Watford fans would have thought the same about playing us. They are, before Wednesday nights matches, 4 points and 3 places above us, with the ability to concede as many goals as we have. They have scored more than 2x as many as us however, and that could be a telling difference come Saturday afternoon, however their home form isn't great. They've won 2, drawn 3, lost 3 scored 10, conceded 16. Now if we just had even a sniff of any type of form away from home I'd say we have a chance. We don't so I'm going to say we have yet another chance of improving someone else's piss poor home record. That being said, tomorrow is our 18th fixture. Halfway through the season and then we start playing the sides we took points off back in August and Septober. So what better place to go and get half the points we need for survival, halfway through the season? With both our centre forwards scoring this week so far, what's the chance of them braking our duck on the road? Are ya wi' me lads? Or agin me? The Big Picture, Sleeping with the Past.(2 here to start)
We first played against Watford in the League during our wonderful 1969/70 season, winning 3-1 at home and drawing 1-1 at Vicarage Road. We then met quite frequently forming our collective Tumbleweed Connection as we marched down the divisions in the 1970's, playing again in both Divisions 3 & 4. You'd have to Take Me Back to our 4th Division days however for the first time I watched us play against them at Leeds Road. Reg Strikes Back
Watford woke up from their slumbers in the bottom tier when a certain life long club fan called er, Reginald Kenneth Dwight took over the club as Chairman in 1976 and appointed a certain Mr. Graham Taylor, former Grimsby player (more recently Lincoln City Coach/Manager at the time) as the Watford manager the following year. Don't Shoot Me I'm only the Piano Player
Reg had made his money by Writing a few ditties with his mate, Bernard John Taupin, and performing them on stage, often wearing rediculously large specs and outlandish costumes, from behind a piano, accompanied by a fairly reasonable backing band. If you haven't twigged it yet, Reginald Kenneth Dwight is none other than Rocket Man, Elton John. The Outrageous Graham Taylor ![]() With the Smiling Reg Dwight. The Road to Eldorado
Despite maybe being seen as a bit of a Madman Across the Water by some of the American music and sports fraternity, the Chamelion and his heavily funded side-kick, The Wide Eyed and Laughing Graham Taylor took them from being Too low for Zero to the 4th Division title in the 77/78 season, promoted to the 2nd Division 78/79 season and up to the First Division in the 81/82 season. They started their first season in the top league with 4 wins from 5 to go top, just 7 years from being bottom of the 92, fulfilling Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting Reg's desire to make them a First Division club. Watford were unable to maintain a title challenge, but eventually finished the season second behind Liverpool, which ensured UEFA Cup qualification for the following season. Luther Blissett finished the season as the First Division top scorer, before signing for Italian Serie A side Milan for £1 million at the end of the season. An FA Cup Final appearance followed in the 1984 fixture, where they lost to Everton. After guiding Watford to a ninth-place finish in 1986–87, Taylor left the club to manage Aston Vanilla.![]() ![]() Two of the players that put Watford on the map. Luther Blissett and John Barnes However, let's not forget their most famous ![]() ![]() Andy Rankin ![]() 299 games for Watford, 71 for Town and that was after 85 for Everton who didn't realise what they had let go. Watford were relegated in the 87/88 season and were back in the third tier for the 96/97 season. Taylor returned as manager (from a position of Director of Football, demoting Kenny Jackett to Assistant Manager) and won what was then League 2 and followed that with another promotion after beating Bolton 2-0 to what was now the Prima Donna League. Well, not quite, it was called The Premiership but we know how that ended up. They only lasted the 1 season this time and Taylor retired after the 2000/01 season. ![]() Let me introduce you to our new manager
...... our new manager ..... our new manager .... our .........Since then, they've had a who's-who of managers through the revolving doors at Vicarage Road, including Gianluca Vialli, Ray Lewington, Aidy Boothroyd, Brendan Rogers, Malkay Mackay, Sean Dyche, Gianfranco Zola appointed when the Pozzo family too over in 2012-13. He was replaced by Giuseppe Sannino for 8 months, then Oscar Garcia for about a month, Billy McKinlay for about a week, Slavisa Jokanovic, Quique Sánchez Flores, Walter Mazzarri and finally current coach Marco Silva. To the best of my knowledge they haven't sacked him yet, but there's still a couple of days to go and we all know how Chairmen and Boardroom's panic when the realise they are playing the mighty Terriers. ![]() ![]() ![]() They changed the Rules
Watford flirted with administration before the Pozzo's took over and with them also owning Udinese and Grenada, Watford forced The Football League to change their rules on loan players, after Watford loaned 14 players from the Spanish and Italian clubs in one season.Ups and Downs
They have yo-yo'd quite a bit in this period, beating L666s 3-0 in the play-off final in 2006, they again only lasted 1 season with only 5 wins to their name. The Pozzo's money took them to a play-off final in 2013, but a Kevin Phillips penalty saw them lose 1-0 to Palace. Considering he'd been seen on Huddersfield Station for about the 10th time in a week that very morning, he did well to get there. Watford had won a dramatic play-off semi against Leicester, when then Leicester player Anthony Knockaert (yeh, him), had his last minute penalty and follow-up shots both saved by former Arsenal goalie Almunia and Watford raced up the other end, scored and won 3-2 on aggregate with the last kick of the match. Hoggy provided the pass that a delighted Troy Deeney smashed into the back of the net. Forestieri remarkably didn't fall over before supplying the cross from the right wing to Hoggy.Looking at Knockaert's face, I guess that's why they call it the blues. It was certainly Goodbye Yellow Brick Road for Leicester that season, but they were to bounce back soon after with some Sartorial Eloquence (shouldn't that be elegance??? - Ed). Now, realistically, you'd have thought that after Knockaert took that kick that he should have never been allowed to take, it would have been the end of stupid, selfish players with an ego the size of a goalmouth taking penalties that should have been taken by the nominated player, well wouldn't you? Er, apparently not, eh Mr. Benteke? ![]() They finished 2nd in the 2014-15 season to Bournemouth, missing out on top spot in a dramatic last game of the season drawing 1-1 with Wendies. Watford finished a respectable 13th last season and are currently (9th). We last played each other in the 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons in the Championship. The results at Vicarage Road were 4-0, 1-4 and 4-2, Watford scores first. So, it's Town's turn to score 4 again this Saturday then? ![]() The new East Stand and other improvements.
They finally did something with that awful mess that was there the last time I visited Vicarage Road - we lost 4-0 ![]() ![]() ![]() The old East Stand, part of which was constructed in 1922, was closed to the general public in 2008 for health and safety reasons, although it still hosted the dressing rooms and the matchday press area. In November 2013, the East Stand was demolished and in its place a new steel-framed, 3,500-seater stand was constructed. The stand opened fully on Boxing Day 2014 and was named The Elton John Stand after the club's long standing chairman. ![]() The Graham Taylor Stand, opposite, built in 1986, has two tiers and runs the length of the pitch, with the upper section containing the club's corporate hospitality. At either end of the pitch, The Vicarage Stand is split between the club's family section and away supporters, while the Rookery Stand is for home supporters only. Both stands were built in the 1990s, financed by proceeds from player sales. In the summer of 2015, The Elton John Stand was revamped in order to accommodate an extra 700 seats. This number was revised a day later to around 1,000 extra seats following the announcement of an expansion in the north-east corner. You can see more piccy's in thefootballgroundguide link below Blue Eyes - oops, Blue Shirts.
Watford played in blue shirts, white shorts and blue socks until 1959-60 when they changed to the gold and black that they predominantly use today.![]() Step into Christmas.
So what's going to be in a Watford fan's Christmas stocking this season?![]() Well it wouldn't surprise many to find a copy of the just released Graham Taylor In His Own Words: The autobiography. ![]() Made in England
The ink isn't dry yet so I've as much idea as you on this autobiography. I would not be surprised however if he mentions his time in charge of England and the hammering he got from the press - well maybe just a few lines about those prats at The Sun anyway.![]() Sadly, he passsed away, far too young, in January this year. He and Reg remained the best of Friends to the end and he will long live in the memory of Watford fans. Reg just wasn't expecting to have to attend a Funeral for A Friend who passed away at the age of 72, he was someone who definitley isn't Better off Dead. Stats and all that.
Not so much One Day at a Time but Wagbo is definitely taking this season one match at a time again. These now include Wednesday fixtures/results The Table
Last time out Watford snatched a defeat from the jaws of victory, which enabled Palace to climb out of the bottom three, dumping The Baggies in there and missing out on 8th spot. Town were taught a footballing lesson by Chelski, it won't be our last. Innies and Outies They spent ~£55 million on new players over the summer, similar to us. Also like us they plundered Derby's midfield riches of talent and brought in Will Hughes biggest disappointment so far is Andre Gray - so expect him to get a hat-trick on Saturday They recouped about £15 million of that money getting shut of a few Top Scorers Troy Deeney didn't make as many starts as perhaps he would have liked early in the season, leading to rumours of other clubs lining up offers for January. Depends on the sources of those rumours as to how valid they are. (just saying). Richarlison and Decouré have 5 each, the rest are spread around the side. Wagbo's Wise Words Short version from the Town website. If Radio L666s stop playing hide and seek with their clips, or train their YTS student properly so he or she starts putting them in a consistent place, I might be able load that link too. In case it doesn't work - some of the transcript on the Town website https://www.htafc.com/news/2017/december/david-wagner-pre-watford/ Wagbo on Radio Leeds - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05r7w1v How to get there, where to park, where to get the Crazy Water, pies and pee's, the Club at the End of the Street and all that.
It's in here - but don't forget to get back Honky Cat, because I'm Still Standing and I'm not done yet, even if the change is gonna do you good. The Last Song
One thing is for certain on this trip to Watford - Town, Wabgbo, please, please score one. Not scoring away from home is becoming a bit of a Ball and Chain that we are dragging around with us, so Don't let the Sun to go Down on Me AGAIN without us scoring an away goal. 4 might be pushing it a bit, but the first 1 since Palace would be an absolute Diamond. If we win, it will be one Wonderful Crazy Night, but I'll happily settle for a score-draw point. Sacrifice the defensive play for once away from home if you have to.One last thing, If Smile a While is unique to Town, what is Your Song that's unique to you Watford fans? Any of you reading this? I hope you don't mind 'cause I think we should know. Right, that's enough of Reg's albums and songs for this thread, over to you lot. Cheers, ![]() ![]() ![]() Or maybe just a quiet "belly full of beer." these days ![]() TV Channels for our foreign readers - http://www.livesoccertv.com/match/2502903/watford-vs-huddersfield-town/ RE: Hornets v Terriers 16-Dec-2017 - Lord Snooty - 14-12-2017 Nice one, theo. ![]() That 3-1 win in 69/70 that you mentioned, was the night that we received the 2nd division championship trophy. A great night that was. ![]() I've been to Vicarage Road twice and seen us win them both. First time was in the League Cup in the 80s. A 2nd leg tie when they were one of the top teams in the country. And then more recently when Danny Ward scored a hattrick coming on as a sub. Unfortunately I won't be there this Saturday. Off to the panto. ![]() RE: Hornets v Terriers 16-Dec-2017 - WakeyTerrier - 14-12-2017 Got a feeling we'll get something from this to stop the away day rot RE: Hornets v Terriers 16-Dec-2017 - theo_luddite - 14-12-2017 Added a TV link for our foreign viewers ![]() ![]() Table updated, makes no difference to our relative positions, we're both just 1 point nearer the trap door. Well done Baggies, but how did you get a point at Anfield with your recent record? RE: Hornets v Terriers 16-Dec-2017 - sloppyattheback - 14-12-2017 Sadly I'm not expecting anything other than the normal away day set up I've witnessed since Palarse and changes when its far too late. Bah Humbug ! Would love to be sooooo wrong about it all come 5pm but we struggle with 3 games a week yet 2 away games now that on paper we should be targeting something. RE: Hornets v Terriers 16-Dec-2017 - theo_luddite - 14-12-2017 On paper West Brom shouldn't have got owt from Anfield last night but they did. On paper Swansea, having beat us and with us giving it a go against those Manc Citehzens, they should have got something last night, and were never in with a sniff. Palarce shouldn't have had owt from Watford on Tuesday either, but they turned up for the last 3 minutes, again and got something. Put your fish and chips in your papers, it's got nowt to do wi' football results. i'm optimistic however of a 0-0 scoreline. It seems the Southern Terriers have organised a 'bit of a do' with Sir Patrick of the Stewarts on Saturday at The Jurys Inn, just heard on the Radio Leeds replay. It's in Watford - try Google Maps or a decent beer/hotel guide. It'll be all over bar the shouting by the time I arrive from Muddled England. Have to agree with you about the depressing set up's tho' Sloppy after that performance at Palace. RE: Hornets v Terriers 16-Dec-2017 - WakeyTerrier - 15-12-2017 Don't worry Theo...Patrick is a right boring old fart RE: Hornets v Terriers 16-Dec-2017 - theo_luddite - 15-12-2017 I'd be walking straight passed there and down the main drag for a decent pint anyway. 1st stop Moon Under Water. I don't watch films so I'm no big fan of the Luvvies. RE: Hornets v Terriers 16-Dec-2017 - talkSAFT - 15-12-2017 (14-12-2017, 20:51)theo_luddite Wrote: Added a TV link for our foreign viewers Thanks for your interest, Theo. Liverpool fans might say they wuz robbed, but Albion gave it a real go Weds night. They honestly looked top half (which most Fans claim), but we've got some good players who Pulis turned into defence robots. Quite a lot of fans have deserted the Club because the ex Head Coach didn't think we were worthy of watching good football. (He thought we were lucky to have Premier status and that his philosophy of defend-defend and hope for the odd goal from a corner was the only possible way of keeping little old Albion in the Premier, and "I've never got a Team relegated, so be careful what you wish for.") There was plenty of evidence on Weds that Pardew has given midfielders their wings - we actually broke out of defence, and 4-5 seconds later attacked the Kop with 5 or 6 players in their box. With Pulis it was, literally, 1 !!! We've desperately needed a quality goalscorer for 3-4 years (ok, so has everyone), but no decent striker would want to play under Pulis, bringing their goal ratio from 1 in 3 to 1 in 10!! He just wanted a donkey upfront who might win us that corner. I'll (we'll) have to see if Pardew is The Man, but: "Now, this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the End. But it is, perhaps, the End of the Beginning". Pretty over-dramatic! But I (we) can see light at the end of the tunnel. Well, you did ask! ![]() RE: Hornets v Terriers 16-Dec-2017 - theo_luddite - 15-12-2017 Living where I do talkSAFT there's more than just a few Baggies fans around that I have a beer and a sensible football conversation with, so we keep an eye out for each others results and all that. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I've updated the OP with Wagbo's Wise Words, such as I've been able to find. So how many of Reg's Album and Single's titles have you all spotted so far? To be honest I've not counted them myself yet, but if Town start playing like they have been doing away from home it will give you something to do in between Watford scoring. If more than two have a go I'll go back through the thread by the time Snoots's Prediction League Results are published - so that's Wednesday - and highlight and count them. That should take me a ![]() Hint - there's a couple of times I've purloined his lyrics - they don't count as the song title is already lurking nearby so you don't get two points for the same thing. Album or Song Titles only, some Song Titles only appeared on Albums so if you find both, they both count. If I get the total wrong- like I said on the PFP thread - shut up. ![]() |
