EFL Trophy - Dancingwilldoit - 29-11-2017

Just noticed that both West Ham and Swansea U21's are top of their groups in the Southern Draw. What happens there then? I thought the U21 teams had to play all their games away but then the teams who finish top get a home draw ?????
Does that mean the teams who finish second in the Southern half of the draw get an unfair advantage? Its the old North South divide again.

RE: EFL Trophy - Devongone - 29-11-2017

Does it matter? U21s are hardly used to playing at home anyway.

RE: EFL Trophy - bluepooch - 29-11-2017

I think the idea was to develop the young English premier league players by playing them against misters .
Stoke's U21 goalscorer the other week was a 30 yr old dutchman !

RE: EFL Trophy - Devongone - 30-11-2017

Do you think using Joe Rowley as a sub last night was to hide him from Man City and any other top teams?

Is having to play at Fleetwood on a Choosday night supposed to be some sort of reward?

(I had heard of of three of Man City's team by the way.)

RE: EFL Trophy - bluepooch - 30-11-2017

Dev, a few months ago when Rowley was injured ,you were advocating giving all the young ones a chance and i said he was the only one looking worthy of a first team place (possibly Wakefield as well) and that he will become a top player .I think Dancing remarked that he wouldn't make any difference or words to that effect .It think Joe is now showing his worth as a key member of the team. Are you going to acknowledge that I was right ?.The lads stock is on the increase weekly.

RE: EFL Trophy - Dancingwilldoit - 30-11-2017

Dancing remarked nothing of the sort Blue. Both Dev and I have been advocating bringing youth players through to the first team for ages, do you acknowledge we were right?

RE: EFL Trophy - bluepooch - 30-11-2017

Dancing, maybe I didnt explain properly .I particularly singled out Rowley as the only one capable of getting a regular first team place and becoming a big value to the club .I was of the opinion that throwing all the young ones in was not going to benefit of the team.

My Ratings for last night

Anyon- 5 - Made one save from a very weak penalty which my grandmother would have saved .Otherwise didnt get anywhere near any of their 5 goals.
Barry - 6 - I like Brad ,limited though he is ,at least he is a 100 % er .Was steady defensively but his crossing left a lot to be desired
Hird 7 .Got most decisions right for a change and only gave one free kick away which led to their goal..
Maguire -7- Looks to have strengthened this season and had a decent game ,only one foot though which means he has to play left centre half.
Binnom Williams 8 .My MOTM and had his best game yet ,his marauding runs down the left are looking good and I can see him causing defences a lot of problems .Can tackle as well.
Mccourt 6 -Had a busy game without doing anything spectacular.Got injured second half.
Dimaio 6 - Got stuck in and another one steady if unspectacular
Reed 6 -Talented but Incredibly sloppy ,gave simple balls away numerous times .He needs to sort this part of his game or he will struggle in a higher division .
Kellet 6 Looks to be growing in confidence and will score goals, but quieter second half when push out wide.
O Grady - 6 Tried hard and will always put himself about and actually got better as the game went on .Took his goal well but couldnt really have missed .
De Girolamo 5 Had a poor first half ,a little improved second but hasn't done enough to warrant a regular place .
Rowley -7 One of the rested superstars and made an immediate impact scoring with a fine header.
Weir -6 Is definitely one of those improved under Jack ,solid but unspectacular when he came on .

All in all a decent performance against a talented and lively team which we expected .Job done ,although not perhaps in the way we hoped.

RE: EFL Trophy - Devongone - 30-11-2017

Pooch, neither I nor Dancing advocated throwing all the youngsters onto the pitch at the same time, but I think we would have been happy with four or five in the squad - especially when they were being replaced by loanees who WERE quite literally doing nothing for us.

BUT that was when we had the idiot with whom you were in love in charge, as you well know! If you keep making facts up you'll turn into Donald Trump. It could happen Pooch, watch the mirror for unexpected hair growth!

I would still like to see Wakefield on the bench at least, Maguire playing, Rowley playing, Ricky German either in the squad or on a Vanarama loan with Brownell too.

I definitely did think McCourt looked like the perennial fourth man in a four-man midfield. Now I'm hoping he isn't too badly injured! I thought Reed was lightweight and fans are still generally of that view and Weir is nothing if not ordinary (but you often have a Weir in your team at this level!) So what Jack is doing is pretty amazing.

I still think the two most important things a club like ours can do to improve is develop young talent and find and develop unrecognised talent lower down the pyramid. And we play them and eventually we sell them.

IF I were Jack Lester last night I would have hidden Joe Rowley from Man City, because them turning his head would be bad for us and him, and I would have rested Dennis too - the last thing we needed was him scoring a hat-trick in a nothing competition. (If we are contemplating selling Dennis, a decision I'm guessing won't be down to Jack, we'll have to calculate how much going down would cost us and base the transfer fee on that!) You watched it last night Pooch, do you think Jack hid the two of them? I'd applaud him for it. I bet he probably would rather someone else had scored .........

You might remember things that you must have read on here first LIKE Joe Anyon was at best a reserve goalkeeper and if there were ever any doubt about Tommy Lee's fitness he would be a disaster. That was before he played a friendly! And you are still able to give him only 5 out of ten in last night's glorified friendly against Man City's bunch of foreign kids learning English football.

You've liked Rowley from the start Pooch. Excellent spot! I'd barely noticed him feeding Ricky German in the Juniors, probably because everyone wants a big confident black centre forward to sell when he reaches 21 don' t they? But I suppose Joe was doing that. It's great he's now doing so well. It'd be great one day to make a huge profit on him. But both for us and the boy himself I think first team football with us will bring him on quicker than the giant squad of juniors at a Premier League club. And that's why I and Dancing I think want our other lads getting a first-team look-in once Jack has got his fingers on every pulse in the club. In the position GC has placed us in Jack has to be a bit conservative, but if he can bring enough out of McCourt to go from an ordinary and pretty much unwanted player to one all the fans are now worried about us losing, then what can he do with the young lads? I'm glad Charlie Wakefield got 5 minutes last night - I hope it's 35 at Fleetwood ..... It's the way forward. It's why I wanted jack as manager, because I think he does have vision.

Personally I don't care about this cup anymore since they changed the format. We would be better off out of it and concentrating on moving up the table. Only good thing about still being in it is we can experiment formations and try out different line ups.

RE: EFL Trophy - Dancingwilldoit - 30-11-2017

Will you still be saying that if we make the final at Wembley Matt?
