Ernie Ernie Ernie - Devongone - 05-10-2014

Living down here I didn't know about Ernie Moss till yesterday ...............

I first saw him playing for the Juniors and it was obvious then that his sheer enthusiasm would take him into the first team. It didn't take long.

He had a an eye for goal, but he wasn't our greatest goalscorer. He wasn't the quickest centre forward we've had, the most skilled, the biggest, or even the strongest, but Ernie was for real. He gave the game all he'd got, he worked the opposing defence, he chased lost causes and always played for his team, rather than himself. He remained a mixture of the raw and the clever touches he'd developed ....... and he was ours and we loved him.

It was great when he succeeded elsewhere too, and the news that he is suffering some vile form of Alzheimers is terrible. For those too young to remember him, he really was a hero to cheer; fallible and whole-hearted. I saw him score with his arse at Mansfield, and then Randall handled one in so obviously that everyone in the ground except the ref and linesman saw it ..... Great days.

Whilst he's still alive I just wanted to say thank you to Ernie, Ernie, Ernie. Our Ernie!
