Is it a case of Too Much? - devwakey - 25-10-2016 Having seen recent posts about the lack of activity here etc... I thought I would share something I have been thinking about for the last couple of weeks. Does anyone else feel that Football is too accessible these days? When I grew up in the 90's (27 now), I started getting into football around 95/96. It was in these early years when Sky Sports would show one game on a Saturday and maybe one on a Sunday with the occasional Monday night game. These games generally consisted of big fixtures only however e.g. Man Utd v Liverpool I remember when my dad would get me all excited for the Charity Shield match before a season as it was always such a battle and amazing atmosphere. To see any highlights of your teams goals, you would have to wait for the local news or even Goals on Sunday for a quick video of your teams goals. Fast forward 20 years, Now we have 5 live games a weekend on Sky, accompanied with BT Sport showing a couple, not to mention all the med week games, Friday night games and Monday Games shown. In fact these days it's probably harder to find a night when there isn't a football match on live somewhere. For me, I feel a bit fed up of football in general as i feel it is rammed down my throat everywhere i turn, Even sights like Twitter show highlights of goals seconds after they have gone in. I know things at West Brom aren't inspiring at the moment, but I just wonder if anyone else is actually fed up of football in general, as oppose to just the Albion. RE: Is it a case of Too Much? - St Charles Owl - 25-10-2016 Dev, I can see the point you are making and like you wonder if its just too much coverage!! I moved to the States in 2001 and for the first few years really missed football, couldn't even get a radio commentary feed back then and hardly any was shown on tv. Gradually it started to be shown and now I get the Wednesday commentary every game and can watch every Premier League game for free, and I for one am loving it, watching as much as I can, even to the point of getting up at 5am most Saturdays to catch the early PL game. The one advantage I have is I am isolated from the media frenzy that follow the PL, sure I get info on the BBC, but I am not surrounded by all the chatter that goes on around football, I just get to enjoy the games on their own. The other problem I would add with football in England is that it is so dominant in terms of media coverage and fan participation, so there is no let up in the hype it gets. Over here the media are all over sports just like there, but they switch their attention between the sports depending on the time of year. Winter is the NFL, summer is baseball and the NBA and NHL fit in between those, so if you are a big NFL fan there are times of year where there is very little coverage and I think that lack of information whets your appetite for the build up to the new season and keeps you interested once it starts. RE: Is it a case of Too Much? - Arcane Astral Aeons - 25-10-2016 i grew up following football in the early 70`s(yes i`m old) and apart from motd(or the old sunday show called star soccer...anyone remember that?...good old Hugh Johns) football back then was played on mud got took to my first game in 74 home against chelsea 0-0 as i remember no perimeter fencing if you were brave enough you could sit almost on the pitch and the only risk was being hit by one of those horrible leather balls. players were paid naff wages but played the game for the love of it not for a big fat pay cheque fast forward....... along came the overpaid and over-rated prima donnas that we now call football players. "i demand £300.000 a week " well us as fans get to fund this ticket prices go up gone are the days when a family could afford to attend games football? dont exist any longer as a sport a business that just wants to make more and more money(not a bad thing) but when it denies the hard working everyday joe from attending games on a saturday then lets call it quits RE: Is it a case of Too Much? - Beefy 1965 - 28-10-2016 Ah star soccer Great for midlands footy........ Bring that back anytime. Sunday lunch time was great because just before Star soccer was about to start the ALPINE man (now) who remembers him ? ![]() Out with my empties i went and choose another three flavours to last me the week, Oh them waz the days wore it ![]() Back in thee house, then roughly 5 Mins later, Beer at home means Davenports rang through the living room meaning the imminent start of the footy ![]() RE: Is it a case of Too Much? - talkSAFT - 28-10-2016 HoHo - I'd forgotten all about Davenports. I'd be heading back to bed about then.....night out at Rebecca's/Barbarella's; home about 3; Up at 9 to play Sunday morning football; hair-of-the-dog; back home to bed; up in time for Songs of Praise; back down the boozer. No misspent youth for me! Sorry, DevWakey. I'm derailing your Thread. Like all businesses, the Sponsors (eg Sky, BT) will saturate the market for their own ends, rather than what the public want. Unfortunately the middle-classes got hold of "footy", and don't seem to be letting go! The Chelsea Lovers now seem to own the game, and the sooner they f*** off and grab hold of Rugby Union the better. When I was 8 I nearly started "supporting" ManU, (following Munich '58), but thankfully everyone at School was a Baggie, and put me in my place. Only 2 months after Munich I begged my Dad to walk me a mile to my 1st match. All we got in those days was the Cup Final, the Amateur Cup Final, and the odd England U-23 match, + 15 mins of goals only on a Saturday night.
