Swindon - Dancingwilldoit - 13-08-2016

Good game. Should have had 5 or 6 first half. Their keeper was superb with some quality stops, kept them in the game or we would have been out of sight.
Good all round performance from us and was good to see Dan Jones come on 2nd half. Liddle was class today. He gets a lot of stick from some but now he has somebody reliable next to him in Nolan he looks a different player.
Only concern today for me was Fulton. He didn't inspire me with confidence. Looked good pre season but gifted a goal last week and just didn't inspire me with confidence today. Get well soon Tommy.
By the way I know its early doors but I did say playoffs for us - looking good after 2 games.

Good assessment Dancing agree with all you said
The only downside for me was that we did tend to sit back more as the game went on and if they had got a second near the end we would have had the jitters .
How important is Ched gonna be this season .Made two and scored one today
Gboly was worth a million today sometimes he really is unplayable.

RE: Swindon - Devongone - 14-08-2016

I'm amazed Ched Evans is doing so well after 4 years off. I thought competitive games were bound to find him out. Maybe he's not at his best yet, but he's obviously worth his place and more which is a real achievement.

I worry for and about Fulton. It can be hard for a young keeper to make the jump to a higher level. If our defence were mega then that would help him mentally ..... but if he feels that a lot is resting on his shoulders it could become too much of a burden. Most of it is mind games ....... and maybe Allinson, who is three years older, might be better able to handle it. Equally maintaining faith in Fulton might be exactly what he needs. It is s difficult call and one we created for ourselves.

Glad Ariyibi shone as is now expected, surprised to be saying this but I'm glad Jones is fit, but most of all it does seem noticeable that with Nolan in the team that not only is Liddle better, but the whole team is better. Would we have surrendered the lead at Rochdale with him on the pitch?

Top six? Dodgy young keeper, slow, aged centre backs, midfield reliant on one player, attacking potential of a striker who might soon have more than football on his mind, a winger who richer teams might covet and a very talented attacking midfielder whose other talents include inconsistency and invisibility. Just playing the devil's advocate. Bournemouth had loads of negatives and look where they ended up.

Too early Dancing to be talking about playoffs or even promotion there's still a lot of football to played. October will be a testing month because we always seem to do not so great in October. I think if we can get about 38-40 pts around about Christmas time then maybe we can start to believe.

I would like to see us play in the Championship but I don't want us to do a Yeovil.

RE: Swindon - Devongone - 15-08-2016

Of course it is too early to be thinking about the play-offs but we all make predictions in our head and carry hopes and fears, that's why we are football fans. My own prediction in my head has been for relegation, but I'll take the play-offs.

Dancing made a very wise observation against Oxford, that team spirit seemed good. Occasionally our division provides a runaway winner, but mostly between say 2nd and 23rd place playing strength doesn't appear vastly different. You never get a team with several Dele Allis. Team spirit, togetherness, simple effective game plans separate sheep from goats. Sometimes something like all the opposition fans booing Ched Evans can be enough to draw the team together. It gives them that us against the world feeling that Millwall foster ...... Hull beat Leicester with the only eleven senior outfield players they had fit. (And Sam Clucas starred in the Premier League too!) Mental attitude and standing together, bottle it, we'd win the league and make a fortune.

Couldn't agree more Dev. Looks like SEB might have played a big part in our downfall last season, you only need one bad apple to start the rot.
Our body language this season is just so different. We are taking good free kicks, putting the ball in the box from corners and wanting the ball from throw ins. All the polar opposite of last season when nobody seemed willing to take responsibility.
There is a togetherness with everybody celebrating a goal. One move in Saturdays game saw Evans go on a run with the ball from well in his own half and at least 5 town players including Donoghue ran in support and we had about 6 on 4, the final ball was god awful but it was just such a change to see us wanting it.

RE: Swindon - Devongone - 16-08-2016

Sometimes one player can breed discontent, just as in other circumstances he might be the making of a team. I've always thought that if O'Shea wanted it every game, he could have a massive positive influence. It's to early to tell whether we're seeing a new O'Shea or just another RicO'Shea ......

Perhaps all the attention around Ched Evans will continue to take the pressure off the other players and bring them together. We'll know more tonight. We need to be able to repeat it.

RE: Swindon - SaltergateBorn - 16-08-2016

`Team spirit` is a very abstract thing, but seems to work wonders in any sport when it`s there - and it can be disastrous when it`s not, irrespective of the quality of the individual players. Is it the case that good man-managers can create it relatively easily, whereas bad ones can lose it very quickly, or is it down to scouting and recruiting the right players in the first place? (I think Paull Cook came into the first category and that Danny Williams but not sure about John Sheridan or Dean Saunders; I suspect not.) Answers on a post card, please.

If SEB was / is the problem, that might explain why the club seem so keen to get him put of the door, but equally we may be doing the bloke an injustice. We`re guessing really. Whatever, I agree it`s a very encouraging sgn.

RE: Swindon - Devongone - 17-08-2016

Sometimes it's the old pro' thing. A player like SEB who has been around a bit can't help having opinions. If he's onside he can be a massive positive ........ but it's easy to become a disruptive influence just by expressing yourself. When you've been successful and suddenly you find you're not succeeding and the team seems better without you it's easy to blame everyone and everything but yourself.

I like Danny Wilson very much and think he's a decent man. I wish he could achieve some rapprochement with Sylvan and help him get the final chapters of his career back on track. Frozen-out-at-Chesterfield doesn't have the same ring as frozen-out-by-Mourinho. If we are so keen to be rid of him it is the equivalent of giving him the No 88 shirt and having him sponsored by The National League. And really he's worth more than that.
