Oxford - Dancingwilldoit - 07-08-2016

Mediocre start to the season. Red hot day was always going to have an impact.
Nolan mom for me. He was superb. Evans did what the script said he should. Put this in you diaries - Chesterfield score from free kick shocker. Some goal as well.
Still worry about Evatt. Outpaced a few times. Gardner was a passenger. Fulton fluffed for their goal but both teams could have had a couple more.
Interesting re Evans. When he scored the whole team rushed over to swamp him. Spirit looks good.
2 young kids sat in front of me , about 4 and 7 both with 9 - Evans on the backs of their shirts. Hope there not in the bin come Oct. Also worth noting I have never seen so many female town fans at a game. Maybe chedgate is history already.

Wish you were right about Ched ........ Not so sure about how the country feels outside Chesterfield. Went to our local shop earlier in the week, said "Ched scored last night."
"Did he use Rohipnol?" came the reply.

Here is a serious question, "Is Hird faster than Evatt?" Between them they seem to make a strong case for Raglan.

Much as I took a lot of hammer for berating the decision as regards Tommy's injury and our treatment of it last season ........... first game, goalkeeper fluffs. First choice at Accrington, over the keeper to whom they gave the No 1 jersey? Yes Chapman. Hmmmmmm.

I cannot imagine what parents who buy their sons Ched Evans shirts are thinking ........ or how we hold up our heads profiting from their sales. Imagine if I went out wearing one with Jimmy Savile plastered on the back, though Cyril Smith might be a more comfortable fit ...... we could sell it in XXXXXXXXL. Rolf Harris could be a colourful design.

I don't think he should pay for what he did forever ....... but whatever the result of the case he's not going to look like the kind of guy you'd like your son to be, however much you enjoy a thirty-yard free kick.

BUT how long is it since we had a player who could score with that kind of free kick? Can anybody other than SaltergateBorn remember Gerry Clarke? Jeez I played cricket against him!

It seems that we've attracted people who aren't fans who are going to games probably to cause trouble with chants etc.

I remember Marc Richards scored a pretty good freekick against Matlock when we first signed him. Also I think Mark Allott scored a freekick against Macclesfield about 7 years ago in the same game we went 4-0 up at half-time.

Hird is much quicker than evatt. Raglan didn't have a bad game yesterday but neither him or hird look good in the left centre back position.
Jeez Matt have we really got to go back to Richards and allot to find the last decent free kick?
I know the Evans factor will be with us as long as he is and don't think if his case is dismissed in October the abuse will stop but he handled it well yesterday.

I`m sure this will come as a great shock to you, Dev, but yes I do remember Gerry Clarke - and his free kicks. He used to live on Rayleigh Avenue, Brimington - just round the corner from my parents.

Dave Blakey was another one who had a kick like a mule when it came to a dead ball. I once saw him hit a free kick so hard from about 30 yards that, although the keeper technically saved it, both he and the ball ended up in the back of the net. Happy days!

Its very rare we score from set-pieces, we mainly concede from them. I remember last season at Saltergate we played Dagenham and they scored a great freekick I remember a lot of the Kop applauded it.

I do realise Chapman was apparently crap for Accrington, but I still worry we've put ourselves in a position where we are placing great reliance on a young lad. The trouble with Chapman IMO was that because he was a late starter we infantilised him. He had to develop quickly, we and injuries seemed to prevent that. Now he wouldn't be human if his self-belief were wholly intact. It'll be interesting to see what Coleman does with him. Like Ryan Fulton the next few weeks will wreck, or make his career. Keepers have to be like Joe Hart and come back from their errors. But will even Joe Hart be Man City's starting keeper this season?

I've seen Dave Blakey belt a free kick too, but until Dancing wisely mentioned it I hadn't appreciated how rare it has been for us to score in that way. As Matt says we are more for conceding them.

Very interested by Dancing's assessment of Hird's pace, which to me condemns Evatt to the knacker's yard. I thought a complete lack of pace was Hird's biggest flaw. He's quite a good footballer. Maybe I've been over-affected by having seen him play in midfield where he was way slower than everyone on view. Evatt in midfield wasn't quick ...... but he wasn't completely outpaced either. I know this will make some people cringe, but REDA JOHNSON is available; we could do much worse.
