v Leicester Reserves - bluepooch - 02-08-2016

So the pre season curtain came down with a 3-1 victory in a game which was the classic game of two halves.
When I saw the team sheet and alleged subs I was half thinking I wish I hadnt turned up but by the end of the game Im glad I did
A sparse crowd saw a drab first half with neither side creating a great deal ,the half lit up by a fine goal from the young Leicester winger. The only players I had heard of in their line up were Keeper Ben Hamer and Ritchie De laet.
Half time came with me wondering what was the point of playing this game ,however my fears were allayed when the second half team came out and proceeded to dominate the opposition.
The second half plus points were my first sighting of Jon Nolan ,I was expecting something good and I wasn't disappointed ,the lad looks a proper midfielder with a fine eye for a pass and wanting the ball all the time ,on this showing he will be the answer to our midfield problems. Also Ched looks stronger and more menacing each time I see him.He will be a big player for us.
All the second half team looked good including the youngsters at the back although we were that dominant they didnt have that much to do and we looked really dangerous going forward .I am much more optimistic that we will hold our own this season if we can keep our main players and stay injury free

Never thought I would say this but Pre-season this year has been pretty piss poor. We played a strong Sheffield Wednesday team but lost 2-0, played a team in Hungary lost 4-3, beat Ilkeston 3-0, beat Matlock 3-1, lost to a mixed Derby side 2-1, drew 0-0 with Buxton (we mainly played youth) and beat Leicester U21s 3-1.

There's nothing wrong us playing Matlock or Buxton or even Ilkeston because we play them every year but normally we play a strong team like Leeds or even Huddersfield.

Matt, what do you class Sheff Weds and Derby as - weak? Yes its not been brilliant but nevertheless its all game time and time for the team to bond.
Blue, come on now - hold our own? We will do much better than that.
The only issue I have is our centre back pairing. Hird + 1 but not Evatt for me. His positional work is great but his recovery speed is non existent. Maybe its just match fitness but that's the only thing I worry about.

I don't class Sheffield Wednesday as weak as they sent a strong side. Derby sent a mixed eleven and we played Leicester U21s with one or two first teamers. I understand pre-season is all about fitness, team gelling together etc but I'm just a little worried going into Saturday wondering are we ready?

I worry about Evatt too. At some point too many important bits of a good player's game go .... and he's no longer the same player. John Terry and Rio Ferdinand are recent examples.

I partly agree with Matt about pre-season. I think you you need one game to enthuse fans. Last season I suggested we should set up a fixture with our twin town Darmstadt. They're decent Bundesliga side now. We could even have an annual trophy made for the fixture.

The trouble is if Derby or Wednesday play their full side against us then we only test out our capacity to defend under pressure. And they get to attack and lose concentration in defence. They are better than us.

I quite like friendlies where we can mix up our team and younger players get a first tentative step up ..... so long as the fans know that is likely to happen before they pay their money.

I must say though that a friendly with Leicester when their team is in America seems pointless, if not a con. Even de Laet was only there because they haven't yet found him a loan, he's already been told he's not wanted. Mansfield, Alfreton, Lincoln, Notts County would all have been more competitive and informative. Perhaps we should have played a team like that on Saturday, then the Buxton match last night. But Matt don't be dismissive of the team we played in Hungary, they're pretty good, they reach the league stage of the Europa League sometimes. I'm all for us playing foreign teams and seeing a different approach to the game.

I think youre reading too much into the importance of the pre season programme.Ive known us play good teams and have a poor start to the season and vice verca. The important thing is the players are match fit and second half yesterday suggested to me that we are probably ready .

We could have played Darmstadt or even a team in Scotland.

If Leicester are looking for a loan for De Laet. Why don't they loan him to us? We could do with another defender.

RE: v Leicester Reserves - Devongone - 04-08-2016

I don't think de Laet would consider us and I don't think we could afford even a portion of his wages.

As Hull City now only have about 8 players having sold Diame I'm thinking they are the sort of club de Laet would consider. I can't imagine he wants to dip below the Championship.

As for Darmstadt I can't see the point of twinning if you don't do obvious things together. Unless we are considering launching the Spire I don't think we can share their position in the space race, but football we could try to up our game and compete.
