v Ilkeston - bluepooch - 24-07-2016

Well it was a bloody hot afternoon and a hard July pitch but we definitely looked more comfortable than against Matlock
I have to say Ched looked very good considering his situation.I thought he wouldn't lack too much in ability and fitness as he had looked in good shape from the photos and he proved that with a very decent centre forward performance
It was comfortable all afternoon and we stroked it about in impressive fashion.
I have to again give praise to Liam Graham who must be pushing for a start even though Mcginn has done nothing wrong either .
Gboly had a quiet game and I hope he hasn't been distracted by the transfer talk.It will do him no good.
The other player Id like to single out for praise is Connor Dimaio who has looked an improved player pre season and will almost certainly start against Oxford unless Nolan gets fit and impresses quickly although with Banks gone we may yet sign another central midfielder.

Was James Higgins there?

RE: v Ilkeston - bluepooch - 24-07-2016

No idea.
I'm bored with that now and the Ched thing .All the arguments and jokes have been done ,I'm just going to concentrate on the season ahead on the pitch, after all .That's what we are here for isnt it ?. At least most of us except the ones who are there to cause trouble and I don't mean hooligans.

Difficult to concentrate on the season ahead when our club is like Fred Karno's Circus. Other fans of clubs are nicknaming us 'Cheaterfield', 'Chesterfiddle'. Not to mention the media attention we're getting for rafflegate and signing Ched Evans. As soon as Evans scored against Ilkeston the Mail put out an article like it was already drafted.

Anyway Pooch having a joke about it is probably the best thing because if we didn't make jokes and laugh about it we would probably cry.

What really worries me is the future of the club. The club is in a lot of debt and fans are starting to feel disillusioned or alienated by the decisions at the top.

RE: v Ilkeston - bluepooch - 24-07-2016

I agree there have been plenty of mistakes and in my experience if the infrastructure of the club isnt right it will be reflected on the pitch .Lets see how the season pans out .

RE: v Ilkeston - Devongone - 25-07-2016

Yes I tend to agree that as powerless supporters we have to make jokes and laugh about our club ...... or we might cry. But mistakes are pretty much part of the data in Division One, that's why we are all down there. Now what did our new ginger ?reserve? keeper look like? Did Maguire look capable of making a step up? Was Rai Simons more of a threat?

Frankly I'd rather Gboly went a bit quiet pre-season. I'd like to get to the season with him still our player, but I do agree with Pooch that transfer-talk can be a bad thing - look at Tendayi when David Moyes went to watch him.

I still worry we are a good player short of a midfield and Ebanks-Blake and Ched up front wouldn't strike fear into me if I were a Division One defender (one hasn't played at all for four years and the other hasn't done much for three seasons). On the other hand Liam Graham coming through sounds a bonus, but my worry about him is that he never makes a first-team appearance ...... but maybe this is his career really starting. And Bournemouth and Burton came up from this division against all expectations. Maybe we should do the reverse of forgetting about James Higgins and make real fun out of it. Whenever the intensity drops we should start chanting oh Jamie Jamie, James Higgins. It would baffle opposing fans and cheer us up.

RE: v Ilkeston - spireitematt - 25-07-2016

I don't think we can afford to lose anymore players for the season. If Gardner goes to Notts which is a rumour going around and if Gboly or Sam Hird leaves then we could be in trouble. Under Sheridan and Cook we always had too many midfielders and not enough defenders or strikers. I think we could still do with another striker.

As for James Higgins the fans should sing 'Can the real James Higgins please stand up'.

Also it could be a coincidence but have you noticed our last few managers all played as midfielders. Wilson, Cook, Sheridan, Richardson.

RE: v Ilkeston - bluepooch - 25-07-2016

Angel has tweeted that he's back in training.
Dev im pretty certain Evans will have a big impact all things being equal.I know hes been out 4 years but its not like he has had a serious injury and hes obviously kept himself pretty fit in prison. Id like to see Dennis partner him up front tomorrow at some stage.

RE: v Ilkeston - Dancingwilldoit - 26-07-2016

Angel back in training is great news. I honestly think if we hold on to Gbolly and O'Shea we will be a force to be reckoned with. We have a nice mix of older players and some young blood coming through. Danny will give them more of a chance if they show they can do it.
Would love to see him start Dennis and Evans up front tonight. I know they are similar in the style of play but they could cause some problems for most teams together. Derby should be the first real test of the pre season. We were tired against Weds after the overseas trip then Matlock and Ilkeston were hardly hard work. Looking forward to tonight.

RE: v Ilkeston - Devongone - 26-07-2016

I thought one more Angejury would kill his career. Great that he is back in training. If he could be fit then the blend of young and older does look more promising as Dancing the optimist says.

I still think there's a huge gap between physically fairly fit and playing football in Division One. Yes I'd like to see Dennis and Evans start up front to see if they are a viable partnership, or the same player twice. Four years out is a very long time. I've seen how players who ended pro' careers and gave up the game for a bit fared when they returned to amateur football ....... and they found it hard. But to back up what you say Pooch, Ched does look a hard, fit body ...... he's young -ish, maybe he can do it much quicker than I imagine.

I still can't get out of my head that we grabbed Reece Mitchell and that must mean if we get an offer for Gboly it'll be Ariybividerci. But then I can't get my head round the idea that a club that wants to survive in The Championship would grab Sam Hird.
