Newcastle vs WBA - Match Thread - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 04-02-2016 Tony Godden and Ally Robertson keep Albion's sheet clean at St James's Park; 10th September 1977
Following Tuesday's last-gasp draw against Swansea, Albion continue the protracted march towards the thirty-point milestone with a trip to troubled Newcastle this weekend. No doubt the Magpies will have this marked down as a must-win game, while for us it remains one best-not-lost; as painful as the prospect is, it could well end up being "safety first" again in this one. I cling to the hope that we'll be adventurous enough to give a run-out to new loanee Alex Pritchard, if only so that he doesn't end up becoming another Gnabry. There was a flash or two of inspiration from Sandro on Tuesday, and another confidence-booster for the frustrated Rondon, so despite another sub-par performance, we do - hopefully - have the building blocks to improve again in the coming weeks. We'll see how that goes. In the meantime, let's just get those thirty points chalked up. Laurie Cunningham fires past Mike Mahoney in Albion's 3-0 win against Newcastle, 10th September 1977
RE: Newcastle vs WBA - Match Thread - WBA Will - 04-02-2016 Went to this fixture last season. We were already safe from relegation, Newcastle had lost something like 8 on the bounce, I thought there might be something to make the 4.5 hour worth it. Nope, complete defensive crap. Not making the same mistake this year! RE: Newcastle vs WBA - Match Thread - drewks - 04-02-2016 This is DEFINITELY a game that, alas, we'll sit back and try and frustrate them. Absolutely sure that THAT word - frustration - will be mentioned time after time by TP in the build up to this game. I can see him ignoring any calls for a more positive approach, thinking that the home support will simply turn on their team if they're drawing a blank after an hour. Actually, this time, it may well be the right tactic. Can def see the Toon imploding at some stage if they can't get a lead; tailor made for Saido to go on and show em what they couldn't afford ![]() ![]() RE: Newcastle vs WBA - Match Thread - 4evaabaggie - 04-02-2016 Trouble is they could afford ..... We just refused to sell. In current circumstances I believe the right decision ......if you have a potato gun don't give your rivals a machine gun RE: Newcastle vs WBA - Match Thread - Borders Baggie - 04-02-2016 I'm going to the game with my son and will happily take a defensively boring 1-0 win with an injury time winner (circa Stadium Of Light 2004 Jason Koumas) One of the worst games I've been at but such an important result. In my opinion, a win on Sat would just about see us as good as safe if Liverpool beat Sunderland. RE: Newcastle vs WBA - Match Thread - Beefy 1965 - 04-02-2016 I know I posted this on the other match thread, but wanted to keep this thing bubbling over in people's mind and share your thoughts, It's made me realize , well maybe things are not that bad at all regarding where we are as a club right now ![]() Ok I have been listening and scoring Albion forums on the Web, Now i'm as pissed as most of you at the football that's being served up But TP saved us from relegation last year Now .................... Read this and just think about it for a moment, I saw this post earlier on another forum. I Welcome your thoughts on what I think is one of the best posts I have read in a long time Thumb up People cheer when they win, boo when they don't. That's modern football. This obsession with 'attractive' football is the biggest load of balls in the modern game. Premier League football is stale, crap and generally boring. The only interesting thing about this season is Leicester and they play much of their game without the ball. I don't want to take too much away from them as I'd love them to win it, but let's not kid ourselves that their emergence hasn't been as much about the shitness of the usual top teams. When did anyone last see an 'attractive' game of Premier League football? The enthralling games are usually those full of mistakes and as a consequence, goals. You sometimes get expansive football when there's a mis-match, but games between evenly matched teams are generally dour and tedious affairs, whichever end of the table. Modern football is full of twats from those reporting on it in the media, many playing and many supporters. There were boos at the Emirates when the final whistle went last night because they hadn't won. They could still win the league FFS and they're booing a home draw against Southampton where Forster has had a worldy and most commentators couldn't believe they didn't win the game. People are force fed crap like possession stats which mean **** all. I've had so many Villa fans quoting the possession stats from last week's game and they now treat it like they beat us. When I point out that they didn't manage to get closer than a few 25 yard efforts that were comfortable for Foster they tell me I'm bitter. It's typical of the bull invented to sensationalise the news and give 'insight' that can be spun to suit their current agenda. There are only two stats that count, results and league tables. You could watch SSN for a whole year and see nothing as insightful as the analysis piece on Swansea posted pre match. The problem is, SSN is the start and end of many modern supporters' football knowledge. That pisses me off, so I'm currently booing the TV. RE: Newcastle vs WBA - Match Thread - Stairs - 05-02-2016 my thoughts are why are these people posting on another forum when they could be here (at least in both) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() RE: Newcastle vs WBA - Match Thread - Borders Baggie - 05-02-2016 I get what you're saying about the match stats getting thrown at us at every opportunity. While watching the feed of the Baggies v Swansea match, how far each team had ran appeared at the top of the screen, followed by how much of that was 'sprinting'!! (West Brom surprisingly in front - must've running back towards their own goal). What difference does it make? Also the boring matches. Last season, Mourinho 'parked the bus' several times in matches to nullify their opponents to get the points required to win the league. Hailed a tactical genius. Pulis does it to get the points required to secure premiership safety. Slaughtered. Not an entertainment business now, money talks. But I said the same a year ago, when I was kind of hoping for a sea of change during the Summer. One of the great joys of being a Baggie (whatever League we are in) is the pride when The Hawthorns rocks, or when we go Away and outsing the Home crowd. This season, from what I've seen, the support has largely been pathetic - and not surprisingly! Unless the Club brings in exciting players, and plays them in their best positions, it will only get worse..... Season Tickets will not be renewed; Away coaches will be 1/2 empty; we'll be everyone's least favourite team; there will be booing from the start (like in Don Howe's 1972-73 days); we'll get 2 minutes on MotD, with Beardy Lineker & Co sneering at us. I thought we'd turned the corner a month ago, but we're even worse now, and my love for the Club's diminishing. (It will come back - I know from experience - but this Summer's going to be pivotal). I actually think it would have been better to buy big in January, to see us through, because Inflation is going to go through the roof in August, with the TV money doubling, and I can foresee another Deadline Day panic on 31st August, with Agents (and selling Clubs) holding everyone to ransom. Just go for it tomorrow, Tony. We've looked twice the team when we give it a go, and we've shown that we can't rely on keeping clean sheets - ask Bristol and Posh. |
