After observing lotsa Hibs forums hitting absolute 'meltdown' (that includes my android phone!!) soon after yesterday's SFA announcement of this Hearts supporting referee's Embro derby appointment, this really is a fitting question to ask re this particular referee.
I reckon many Hibs fans were already querying 'who he was' and 'what he was about' about 8-10 years ago. I'll kick off this debate by referring to Hibs Scottish Cup semi-final in April 2007 when a Pars player named Hamill karate kicked Lewis Stevenson just above his knee (ball nowhere in sight!) right in front of the Hampden main stand and Thomson was positioned 4 metres from the incident to Stevenson's challenge and clearly saw exactly what Hamill did in retaliation. This ref walked up to the players, totally ignored the assault and placed the ball down for a free kick to Hibs. ALARM BELLS RINGING AT THAT POINT and what followed was Steven Fletcher upended in the Pars box (a stonewall pen for all to see!!) denied by Thomson and, surprise surprise - Thomson eventually awards the winning goal/pen to the Pars v a very good and capable Hibs team at that time - just won the League Cup weeks before this match!! The plot continued very badly from that period onwards and since then, I've discovered he worked for Forth Electrical in the 1990s onwards, was a Hearts ST holder, and this was corroborated by Hibs fans who worked with him at that time and indeed, one guy who still currently works with Forth Electrical!!!
There are lotsa other critical accounts re Thomson and his highly questionable officiation at Hibs matches and the time coverage is massive TBH!! Hence the huge furore amongst thousands and thousands of Hibs fans and some particularly directed at the SFA whose officials had appeared to discreetly omit Thomson from Derby matches for the past 4 years!! Did somebody at the SFA make one huge gaffe re this decision or was it a deliberate ploy after all this time in ensuring Thomson was given 'other matches'?

With everything that has gone on or been said in the past regarding him and the Hibs/Hearts rivalry I cannot understand why he has been put in charge of this game?? I have no idea regarding his impartiality or competence, but the mere fact that the SFA must be aware of the history shows they are either just plain stupid or trying to prove a point that can never be proved!!

Good comments Saint Charles Owl! Looking at a similar scenario, would the WRU or FIFA ever appoint a French ref to officiate a competitive international match for France v Engerland? Never! By the way Hibs have never won an Embro derby with this Hearts moron in charge! That record won't change on Sunday IMO unless Hibs produce a world class performance and absolutely destroy them with 11 players on the pitch and regardless of the biased officiation of said referee!

Amusing how hertz can be paranoid to the level of 'training with 10' over a scottish ref yet we are paranoid because we have concerns over CT.
We have more chance of getting a straight answer to a straight question from a sevconian than getting a fair chance from this clown.

Ultimately it's just a game of football and a corrupt b#####d like Thomson is not gonna spoil it for me any more. What irritates greatly is as described by Saint Charles Owl - his biased/corrupt position has been researched and known for quite a while and any accountable football authority can discreetly deal with it! I've given up on this match already as we don't win derby matches with this Hearts tosser in charge. They can have the win if this is how they think footie matches should be won - IMO it's a form of cheating that is astounding TBF but unsurprising when it comes to this lot across the city - back to the bad old days eh or has it ever changed? They'll be cheesing when it all unfolds as usual!

Hold on Minute 0762 who's saying football matches should be won because of bad refereeing??ive not seen one post from a hearts fan regards this thread,also your gripe should be with the SFA not Hearts we didn't appoint him,you know I actually thought you were getting better but yer back to being a complete cock.

Thomson is a Hearts fan Fredster. However, there are lotsa decent Hearts fans who share the same views made in this OP. There are indeed others who will be cheesing again re another good job done by their good buddy Thomson. They'll be the same people (not just a few Hearts fans by the way!) who previously chanted Thomson's name at Tynecastle - THAT IS UNIQUE AS I'VE BEVER HEARD ANY REF'S NAME BEING REVERED AT ANY OTHER STADIUM IN DECADES OF WATCHING FOOTBALL!!

0762 yer accusing Hearts if cheating we've done fuq all wrong we don't appoint refs if we did we would NEVER have Collum near any of our games,I totally understand why ye feel upset at his appointment but don't point yer finger at the club it his appointment,I wish he wasn't reffing the game but it's how it is you or I can't change that Hibs on the other hand should maybe approach the SFA and ask them not to let this guy ever officiate a derby again likely fall in deaf ears but at last they'll have tried,I'll be there Sunday and I hope to Fuq we don't win on a bad decision

I said it's a form of cheating but by whom? Read the thread again! Note Hibs view re Thomson's corrupt position - they'll endure his presence but they will formally do nowt other than try to win matches that he officiates. The issue has been previously debated after Hibs AGMs! We wait until he finally retires from football and good riddance too as this guy has consistently terrorised Hibs for years!!
