Should He Stay or Should He Go - drewks - 15-09-2014 Hmmmm.... I think the huge majority of ALL supporters, even at this early stage, would choose the latter. As has been said on another post, are we wanting a pasting v Spurs, and even a struggle v Burnley, to focus JP's attentions on this, or would we want to pick up a few points but then maybe struggle all season with AI's seemingly unimaginative and inflexible team selections, tactics and substitutions? Of course, these aren't the only 2 possibilities but we seem an increasingly unhappy bunch. I'm normally not for getting rid, and really wanted Mel to be given a decent chance; I think it's still VERY early to be thinking of getting ride of Alan Irvine but could really understand it if it DID happen after Saturday or maybe the next game. If we DO want a change, who is out there to make the most of this squad, which seems to be pretty talented and of some depth? Who would accept the job though - maybe it would appear a poisoned chalice given the comings & goings of the last 3 years? Josh? Where are you? ![]() RE: Should He Stay or Should He Go - Beefy 1965 - 15-09-2014 Josh is out rubbing dirt into his scalp hoping his hair will grow ![]() AI has to go before its to late, BUT the coaching staff HAVE to go ........... now ![]() RE: Should He Stay or Should He Go - BaggieMan - 15-09-2014 Downing and Kiely - The common factor since our downward spiral in the middle of Steve Clarke's reign. One would ask the question, just how much influence do these two have in team selection. RE: Should He Stay or Should He Go - Thequietwatersby - 15-09-2014 It'll take at least a good performance against Spurs and definitely a result against Burnley to change my mind about AI. Despite being well liked in the game by numerous players, and also generally coming across as a nice guy, he just doesn't seem to bring anything new to the table. And given the rut we've been in for quite some time now it'll take a real leader to turn this ship around. http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2014/09/15/alan-irvine-desperate-for-first-west-brom-win/ From the tone of the article you can tell he knows he's on borrowed time. And despite me generally hating the managerial merry go round, all the signs are pointing to an unsuccessful season and we NEED a head coach who knows his way round this league and can guarantee keeping us up. I can't confidently say Irvine is the man to do it, and you've only got to cast your mind back to when his appointment was announced. I wasn't impressed then and I'm even less so now. RE: Should He Stay or Should He Go - WBA-Josh - 16-09-2014 If AI was to go then there are plenty of options abroad who would galvanise this team. Quique Sanchez Flores is available and is my first choice. He is back in Spain after 3 years in the UAE where he won one of he main cups. He led Valencia to the Champions League 2 seasons in a row about 6 years ago when they had to keep selling their best players and then led Atletico Madrid to Europa League glory when they beat Fulham in the final in 2010. They also beat Internazionale in the Super Cup final a few months later. His stock isn't as high as it was 4-5 years ago now so may love a challenge in another new country. He has always been one of my favourite coaches who gets his teams playing good attacking football with attacking wide men and intelligent strikers. His Atletico team was a 442 team but it would always become a 4222 when they had the ball with 2 wide men drifting inside and then back to a flat 442 without the ball in a medium defensive press. He is also fair to his players but if they don't play well he will drop them, it doesn't matter who it is. He is also hard on trouble makers that cause trouble off the pitch. Diego Forlan did that and even though he was one of Atletico's top players, Quique dropped him from the squad and never used him again. The only problem that I have had with him in the past was his insistence on the 442. He would always choose it even if it wasn't working and would never give other formations a prolonged spell of usage even if they did work in the matches that they were used. (4231 and 433) However his time in the UAE seems to have changed him as he appears to be more flexible now. Also based on what I have read, he can speak English. Other options are Thorsten Fink and Bruno Labbadia. I talked about them plenty during the summer. It's a shame that Roger Schmidt isn't available as he is fast becoming one of Europe's best young coaches. His work with Red Bull Salzburg was amazing and his tactical ideas are brilliant. RE: Should He Stay or Should He Go - pieandabovril - 16-09-2014 I must admit watching the Sunderland game,I was quietly impressed with the way we played.Follow that up with the draw against Southampton, and there was a bit of hope on the horizon! Since then, the performances have been pathetic! I think you will find that whenever the Supporters start talking about the need to sack the Manager, then it will almost inevitably happen. We are lucky that JP is a fan, well I assume he is,because he can surely see that with AI at the helm,we will certainly be relegated this season.I don't care that we have yet to see all of our new signings out on the pitch. It makes no difference whatsoever if you have a Coach in charge who has absolutely no idea of his best eleven, where their best positions are,and lacks the tactical knowledge to change things around once plan a is blown out of the water. There are still some Supporters I know that believe we should give him more time.I agree, give him more time to find another Club! ![]() RE: Should He Stay or Should He Go - silverbaggie - 16-09-2014 I think most of us now feel that Irvine's appointment was a huge mistake which will, sooner or later, have to be rectified by JP. My concern here is that having sacked a number of Managers within such a short period of time, we may not be able to attract as a replacement the kind of quality Manager that we all so desperately need. Very few Managers with Prem or other top league experience are going to want to take over a club already in danger of relegation and, so obviously in a state of complete disarray. Step forward Mr Pulis who might just be up for one more challenge and if he is PLEASE JP accept that he is not a yes man and you may have to give the bloke some real say in football matters. Josh:- I'm not sure JP would even consider another foreign manager at the moment after the Pepe Mel debacle. RE: Should He Stay or Should He Go - Baggie_One - 16-09-2014 Surely its the deadwood in the set up that is the problem though ? Get a Pulis type manager in, but AI as coach......get rid of the lap dog that is downing, he clearly has a big say who is in the team....................or not. Get a Pulis type manager in, but AI as coach......get rid of the lap dog that is downing, he clearly has a big say who is in the team....................or not. ...can't see us changing the structure of the club like this at all; so if AI DOES get moved on we'll be after a new Head Coach not a manager. Downing & Keily seem to be getting bad press but do we know that this is deserved - are we just putting 2 and 2 together and saying that they are the common denominator in our downward spiral? Not sure if they ARE a huge factor or not - surely the HEAD coach will be the one who guides these 2 and has the ultimate responsibility for players/tactics etc, and these 2 would (just) carry that on? However I'd agree that most HC's seem to want to bring their own in, and in this way these 2 could be a problem in attracting the best candidates ![]() RE: Should He Stay or Should He Go - Worldclassalbion - 16-09-2014 Three words.........TAXI FOR IRVINE This is an extract from the Express & Dingle report from the above link: And Irvine insisted Joleon Lescott was available to face Everton despite not figuring in the matchday squad. “On Tuesday ‘Sess’ got a ball that hit him in the eye and he complained a little bit about it on Thursday but trained, so as far as I was concerned everything was fine,” said Irvine. “He was very much in our thoughts for playing but as a precaution he went to have an assessment by an eye specialist, and we were told that he had blood in his eye and that it was a risk to play because if he got another blow to the eye then it could be something serious. “The decision was taken out of my hands because obviously you can’t risk somebody’s sight. So we lost him on Friday and Boaz Myhill, who had a bit of a bang on the knee. “I would think that ‘Sess’ would probably be OK for next week. SO LESCOTT AND McCauley were both available so why didn't McCauley start instead of Olsson and Dawson and Where the feck was Lescott...........was it the scrap I posted about, if not why wasn't he playing FFS |
