All-time League Positions - talkSAFT - 25-05-2015 The updated All-time League positions are as below. Very little change from last season, and I can't see many positions changing too soon. Albion will probably remain 11th best in my lifetime. ![]() Based purely on League position since The Football League's inauguration (1888), these are the top 50 Clubs. The League champions are awarded 92 League pts, whilst the bottom team in League 2 are awarded 1 League point. (Between 1924 and 1950, there were only 88 Clubs in the League, and so the League champions gained 88 League pts. Between 1888 (12 Clubs) and 1923 (86 Clubs) there were varying nos of League members. The Champs get 12 pts (for example) for winning the 1888-89 season (12 Clubs). When there were 2 Division 3s (North & South), the winners would have each received 49 pts, whilst the runners-up both got 47. 1 Liverpool 8029 2 Arsenal 7974 3 Everton 7899 4 Manchester United 7812 5 Aston Villa 7714 6 Manchester City 7392 7 Newcastle United 7370 8 Sunderland 7238 9 Tottenham Hotspur 7215 10 Chelsea 7181 11 West Bromwich Albion 6956 12 Blackburn Rovers 6799 13 Derby County 6685 14 Wolves 6625 15 Sheffield Wednesday 6603 16 Bolton Wanderers 6601 17 Middlesbrough 6560 18 Sheffield United 6524 19 Birmingham City 6467 20 West Ham United 6427 21 Nottingham Forest 6420 22 Leeds United 6379 23 Leicester City 6372 24 Stoke City 6257 25 Burnley 5895 26 Southampton 5781 27 Preston North End 5544 28 Portsmouth 5337 29 Fulham 5191 30 Huddersfield Town 5155 31 Charlton Athletic 5154 32 Blackpool 5050 33 Coventry City 5001 34 Norwich City 4761 35 Queens Park Rangers 4618 36 Ipswich Town 4590 37 Cardiff City 4418 38 Crystal Palace 4380 39 Bristol City 4296 40 Notts County 4258 41 Barnsley 4241 42 Hull City 4198 43 Luton Town 4153 44 Bury 3995 45 Oldham Athletic 3970 46 Millwall 3953 47 Grimsby Town 3827 48 Plymouth Argyle 3765 49 Swansea City 3738 50 Watford 3726 RE: All-time League Positions - St Charles Owl - 25-05-2015 Considering we haven't been in the Premier League for 15 seasons now, I am happy to see us move up to 15th in this table. Give it another couple of years and hopefully we will be back in the top leage and overtaking Derby and Wolves!! RE: All-time League Positions - BBB - 25-05-2015 If you have worked on this alone, then I take my hat off to you, cos this must have been heavy work. ![]() BBB RE: All-time League Positions - talkSAFT - 26-05-2015 (25-05-2015, 23:23)BBB Wrote: If you have worked on this alone, then I take my hat off to you, cos this must have been heavy work. HaHa I had a very idle day at work a few years ago, and practised my XL skills, pretending to look busy! The motivation was to prove to a Dingle mate that WE were more accomplished than THEM, and we were both surprised at the results. We're 331 pts above them, which means that they would have to finish a whole division above us for the next 15 years or so to pass us. Of course, he wasn't satisfied with that, and quoted the 3 League Championships and European Cup pioneers - but I quoted the fact that they had been in the old 4th Division, and had only really been any good in the 50s and 70s. Every fan of every Club will try to distort the facts to suit their circumstances, but you just can't argue with this League Table. I posted it a few years ago on a Chelsea board, and got dogs' abuse because it included stats before Abramovich! RE: All-time League Positions - silverbaggie - 26-05-2015 Initially, I was a bit surprised to see Liverpool 'top of the pile' as they were very much a second division team in the years just after the War ended then, I remembered their dominance in the 70's It's also interesting to see that the likes of Charlton Athletic and Preston N.E. are still in the top 50 even though neither have been in the 'top flight' for many a year. RE: All-time League Positions - silverbaggie - 27-05-2015 That could be interesting as I always thought that the Baggies team of the 1960's had been more successful in the league than it had. I expect it's a case of memories playing tricks as you get older. Cup exploits were in that decade of course sensational! In fact despite having some wonderful players in that era (Barlow, Kennedy, Allen, Kevan and later Astle, Hope and Brown) I think that we rarely finished in the top seven or eight in the league table. Hi Ho Silver, I'll try and get these stats updated, but I had some stats already on Us v D1ngle5: Pre WW1 we come 14th, and they come 15th Between the Wars we come 11th and they come 28th 40s/50s we come 13th and they come 3rd 60s we come 7th and they come 13th 70s we come 16th and they come 11th 80s we come 18th and they come 38th 90s we come 39th and they come 28th When I 1st went in the late 50s we regularly finished 4th or 5th, after coming Runners-up in 54, and in the 60s we averaged about 1/2 way. Late 70s early 80s we came 3rd, 4th, 5th etc until we went down with a bump in 86, never to return to the Top Division untl Gary Megson's era.
