Pocognoli, Gamboa and Davidson - Salopbaggie - 10-03-2015

While I am one of those who have been wondering what at least two of the three named have to do, to get a run out. Maybe fielding all three in an under 21 game was designed to shut us up.

After an unbeaten 9 in a row for the under 21's, all three played the full 90 minutes of a 3-1 loss to Middlesbrough U21.  Worrying when you think they are all defenders.

Personally I would still like to see Gamboa given a shot as a wing back or even a right sided attacking midfielder.

I'd like to see a RB @ RB, and a LB @ LB, NOT a CB!
I almost don't care whether it's Wisdom or Gamboa, or Poco or Davidson. Opposing teams are obviously aware of the current slowness across the whole back 4 and will either target THAT, or the flanks, where we continue trying to stick square pegs into round holes.
Having said that I think that Dawson has played pretty well generally at RB, likewise Brunt at LB; however we need not just 'OK' - IMO we need the specialist guys who have the experience to defend, cover, AND add to the offensive side when needed.

Agree re Gamboa - would really like to see him get 3 or 4 games in a row to solve this 'pace' issue - I would've thought him playing behind Mac would be pretty solid and exciting?! Blush

Yes I read the report on this with interest although its fair to say Middlesborough are top of the under 21 div it does make you think Hmm!

RE: Pocognoli, Gamboa and Davidson - Tom_Wba - 10-03-2015

This is the thoughts of someone who went last night which i seen on the Facebook page
"Poco & Davidson were poor, Gamboa played well but gets forward way too much for Pulis, also both Nabis look close to being ready"
"Yeah I went pal, like most I'm baffled by some recent selections but Poco did himself no favours if he wants his shirt back on tonight's showing"
" I agree re u21 but to get in the side you train well and play well when selected in games, whether cup, league or U21
Tonight he didn't do that, only Gamboa of the three looked anything like first team class and he probably bombs in too much for Pulis
Agree Nabi got better as game went on and looks a talent"

What’s the difference between our team and our previous teams? Where has our fearless, attacking style of yesteryear has gone?  The old videos show a get-up-and-go; pass and shoot-on-sight type of vibe that seemed to permeate the whole team.  It was as if the team collectively shouted

“We’ve got the ball! Let’s score a goal!” and set about getting forward, fast and hard.  No doubt we often got nailed by this approach by cooler headed opposition BUT as often as not we entertained and won a fair few games.  What I see now is this:-
Goalkeeping.  No real problem with Foster and Myhill way above the average.
Defence.  Big.  Very Big.  Experienced and the bed-rock of the team.  I don’t think many teams enjoy playing against them but they must improve their distribution to the midfielders and vary their play more.  Lescott and Olly could be the perfect mentors to some quick young lad at the back if we could get one in.  They feel important now because they are used at set pieces and are getting goals but that will be found out by other teams and age is not with them.
Midfield.  When they are good they are very, very good but when they are not they are….?  Yacob has to reign in that temper;  Mulumbu must get re-booted back into his dominant role.  All of them must get more forward mentality.  Scholes made a comment about how if he did’nt take risks by going forward then Ferguson would drop him.  There is too much looking around to complete a safe pass sideways.
Forwards.  One is top class.  One is a confidence player.  They desperately need two experienced players competing with them week-in week-out for selection.  There must be, out there somewhere, a young Alan Shearer type gasping for a chance?
If you look at better teams they seem to be able to be defending one moment and in the other teams penalty area within seconds.  We just seem to lump it up to our forwards and hope for the best from them.  If we havn’t got the pace then we should play further forward to compensate.  You can survive by defending well but do we really want The Albion to throw away its heritage and become the best brick wall in the league?

RE: Pocognoli, Gamboa and Davidson - valpayne - 10-03-2015

I think its poor recruitment since we lost Ashworth plus some reasonable not great players getting too old for this level personally, thrown in with failing to appoint a decent manager by Peace Since RH and having to sack them every six months. I was excited when we had Hodgson on board and that was the last time I remember us playing the way you mention MABAB.
I just want to see us survive this year and if we do that and heaven forbid finish above Villa then I'd be very happy as at least then we'd be the pride of the midlands again and that might instil some glory back in for next year and hopefully the new coaching set up might get us back on track, harder to beat, easy on the eye and back to nicking wins from the likes of Tottenham Liverpool Man U Man C Arsenal as we have done in the not so distant past. I'd like to see 2 quickish wins get on to 36 (pundits are starting to say 33 could be enough this year) then we can play those last 5 or 6 horror games without pressure at a time when they're all fighting for euro places titles etc and they play with pressure instead COYB

Thing is, Poco is an international fullback who has played at the highest level in Germany and under Irvine was probably our best player. So good that there were rumours of potential January bids from the likes of Napoli and Milan. Whereas Lescott and Brunt aren't natural LB's, Brunt looks ok going forwards but his defensive positioning can be a bit iffy, Lescott on the other hand is the best CB we have had in my lifetime and is being played in a position where he is so horribly exposed it is embarrassing.

In my mind you just have to play Pocognoli and then you can deal with shipping him out/looking for a new LB or what ever when we get to the end of the season. Playing Lescott there is suicide. I absolutely ripped into Irvine after most games we played and, although I rate Pulis as the best man for us at this moment in time, he is not going to escape criticism just because he is Pulis. He isn't perfect and it is obvious he has a few things he needs to work on if he is ever going to be considered as anything more than someone to keep struggling teams up.

I'm optimistic atm, but my mind will be made up when I see his summer transfer business.

It would appear Pocognoli did not play at the highest level for the under-21s the other night.  As I have said on here before, I am told he has an attitude problem.  I would imagine TP would play him if he thought he was up to the job as we are a bit stuck for full backs (or whatever they're called these days).

RE: Pocognoli, Gamboa and Davidson - Baggievicar - 11-03-2015

I have to admit I'd forgotten Davidson even existed.
I do feel sorry for these guys, whatever the rights and wrongs of picking them or leaving them out. How can you keep yourself motivated if it's plain you're not going to get a look-in? I'm sure they all joined up excited at the thought of prem action (and the same for Varela and Blanco, for that matter), and then you don't even make the bench. In a short career, you must just feel your life is being absolutely wasted.
Anyway, enough pastoral sensitivity. Just find us a full-back who can cut it.

At a rate of twenty grand a week, something's definitely being wasted, but I don't think it's their lives.
