GONE - BaggieSteve - 06-01-2026 Unsurprisingly, Ryan Mason has gone RE: GONE - 4evaabaggie - 06-01-2026 This was inevitable, we are fighting relegation, with our worst away run for 99 years, he was incapable of adapting his tactics or choosing a team to actually compete. Trouble is, who’s next? Been a bit of a poison chalice …. Finances make it difficult to run Albion and be there or there abouts. Come on you baggies .. Albion til I die. Great timing though, start of the transfer window, no boss in charge, how are we going to sign people that a new manager would need for their system when we have no idea who or what style they will play. Is it an excuse in advance for not spending any money. He should have gone a month ago and a new boss in place before the window opened. RE: GONE - drewks - 06-01-2026 "The process of recruiting a new men's first team head coach and staff is under way," the club said in a brief statement announcing Mason's departure. I hope this "process" had begun a few weeks, if not months, ago... RE: GONE - WBA-Josh - 06-01-2026 This should have happened weeks ago with a new man already in for the important Xmas period and would now have the entirety of January to sort out the squad. The new man, if appointed quickly, will still need a match or two to work out the squad before signing anyone. As usual the Albion have fucked up yet again. That’s 3 big ones in 12 months. Wicky fell through because of backroom staff, Mowbray was brought back after being out the game for so long and then kept too long, and then Mason was a big risk that was kept on for too long. I’d say that Nestor has to get this one right otherwise he should be gone too the next time the revolving door opens. As for Mason’s replacement, I suspect it will be Michael Carrick as that is the easy option for the club. I think he’d be good for us but it would also be a bit uninspiring for me. Just read that Carlos Corberan is facing immense pressure at Valencia now after their defeat over the weekend. The team bus was attacked by some fans and there were chants against him too, which could force the owner’s hand I wonder if a return to the Albion could happen in the near future?… RE: GONE - BaggieSteve - 06-01-2026 I know it probably sounds crazy but I’m genuinely sorry at this news. I’m absolutely sure it’s the right decision because the run we’re on is catastrophic and shows no sign of changing, as we drop into the relegation places. It’s just that I was so optimistic at his appointment; a young coach with fresh ideas. Well, he was young. I was just hoping that, after a procession of old farts (Corberan excluded), this might be the inspired move we needed. I guess not. As for a replacement, well they will have been sacked and out of employment so no compensation is required. I’m sure the bookies have already produced a list of potentials, most of whom will either be fantasy or dreadful. Carrick seems to be a name continually mentioned but, as others have said, not overly inspiring. I guess we’ll await with trepidation what Nestor comes up with. I’ll happily take Unai Emery as long as he doesn’t bring any wingers with him
RE: GONE - Baggievicar - 06-01-2026 OS is down "Working on improvements". Let's hope that goes for the club as a whole. I appreciate the time gap in Corberan’s case is not long but our track record of reappointing past managers (Atkinson, Giles, Mowbray) is not great. So, not sure RE: GONE - Slick_Footwork - 06-01-2026 Regardless of how much I dislike any manager, my wish is always for them to turn it around because I hate to see us losing games. With Mason, I think it was clear a while ago that he wasn't going to turn it around. I hoped he would, but it never seemed on the cards. Like Josh, I think the owners should've acted sooner to give the new man input into any January incomings, which are desperately important. Now we're 6 days into the window, without a manager, so clearly any incomings will be decided by the recruitment staff rather than the manager. IMO that often turns into disaster, with players brought in that the manager doesn't want. We have already seen several times over with this regime with Bany, Gilchrist, Frabotta and the list goes on... In terms of the new boss, I don't think I'd want Corberan back. While he's a much better option than Mason, I think things were going stale at the end of his time and going back rarely works. I'd personally like to see Derek McIness, I think he's now earned his stripes as a manager, plays attacking football and would unite the club. However, i'm not sure it would be a good move for him given our current squad quality (or lack of) and the fact he could potentially win the Scottish Premier League this year. Winning the Scottish Prem would be a hell of an achievement and undoubtedly put him in the frame for a top Prem job. But money talks, so who knows. I do suspect it will be Carrick though, as it's the easy option. Although he's got more experience than Mason, I'd still put him in the "punt" category as he's not had enough time in management to really prove himself IMO. Would just have to hope he's a more successful punt than Mason was. RE: GONE - Blue Baggie - 06-01-2026 Sad day for Ryan, on reflection he should have taken a job further down the league to start his managerial journey. Good luck to him. I'm sure his seven figure handshake will help him get over it. RE: GONE - drewks - 06-01-2026 My dream team is a Josh/Slick combo .... or maybe Mozza/Brunty till the end of the season?? |
