Deepdale 30 November 2024 15.00hrs Play them again in a month, tthe utter joy of that MANAGER ![]() HOW THEY DOING? ![]() FORM GUIDE PNE 4 WBA 11 HOT SHOTS ![]() NEWISH ![]() CHAMPO STUFF ![]() ![]() THEY'VE BEATEN US BEFORE BIT ![]() MANAGER STUFF Paul Heckingbottom praised the attitude of Dai Cornell and challenged the goalkeeper to go and fight for his spot, as he looks set to deputise for the suspended Freddie Woodman. North End’s No.1 was shown a late red card in the midweek draw against Stoke City, leaving an empty spot between the sticks for the Welsh shot-stopper to fill. His cameo appearance from the bench on Tuesday night was his first of the season, but the manager said his attitude – whether he’s playing or not – can never be questioned. Hecky said: “In my time here, the way he's approached every day has been exactly the same. He’s known his role and with that comes that understanding that you have to train hard and be ready every day because you've got to keep yourself sharp when you've not got the games to do that for you. Dai does that. He trains really well every day. “It's the same as every other place on the pitch. I know Freddie's had the shirt for a long, long time, and then we've stayed with him and he's had the shirt for us, so nothing's really changed for Dai. “The good thing from my point of view is he’s been used to that. He’s used to being ready. What we want is him going out there performing, like he wants to stay in the shirt. That's it. That’s the competition you want in every position.” Competition at times this season has not been as strong as it could have been, due to injuries and suspensions. PNE will, though, welcome back Ali McCann after he served a one-match ban, while Liam Lindsay and Mads Frøkjær both have a chance of returning from injury at Deepdale. Up top, there have been welcome returns for Milutin Osmajić and Will Keane, who had been missing through suspension and injury respectively. Hecky said: “There’s no risk with Milly because Milly was training a lot. He just missed a lot of games because he didn't go away with the national team either. “It’s game time for Milly that he needs. Keano’s obviously a little bit different because he had an injury, so we're bringing him back. “He looks fitter every day. He's looked better in training. He got a few minutes Saturday and a few more midweek. He’s in a position in my mind now where he can start.” West Brom come to Lancashire sat just outside of the Play-Off spots and on the back of a rather unusual run of results, having drawn eight of their previous nine matches. “We know it's going to be tough,” added Hecky. “Carlos (Corberán) has done it at Huddersfield and West Brom, where he’s set up in a similar way. “They can be good in possession or they can be really strong without the ball and good on the counter, so we know it's going to be tough. We know it's going to be a tight game. “We have to approach it the way we approach all games and set out to try and win it and try and cause them as many problems as we can to get three points.” https://www.wba.co.uk/ The Fitness Test Liam Lindsay and Mads Frøkjær both have a chance of being available for Saturday, with their fitness set to be assessed ahead of the weekend. Robbie Brady is due to return to training next week, therefore will miss the weekend, while Paul Heckingbottom confirmed he feels Will Keane is now fit enough to be in a position to start. Ched Evans and Patrick Bauer are the only other players expected to miss out. The Baggies West Brom head into the weekend’s round of fixtures sat seventh in the table and in the middle of a nine-match unbeaten run. It’s been a pretty unique sequence of results for the Baggies in recent weeks, having drawn eight of those nine games, with five of those being goalless affairs. Having conceded just 11 goals, they’re the division’s third-tightest defence, and that could prove important as they look to reach the Play-Offs for a second consecutive season. The Officials Referee: Thomas Bramall Assistant Referees: Richard West and Natalie Aspinall Fourth Officials: Matthew Corlett Thomas Bramall, who last refereed PNE in March 2024 in a goalless draw at home to Hull City, will take charge of Saturday’s fixture. Bramall has officiated three North End wins in the past, including the 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park when Liam Lindsay scored a last-minute winner. MACS MUSINGS A team we don't have a recent good record against having been battered twice last season, we are the draw kings of the division apparently we have hit 400 hundred stalemates of 0-0 most of them this season Take a point at least we possibly have a keeper who has a bit off confidence playing, he may be busy RE: West Bromwich Albion Deepdale 30/11/2024 - talkSAFT - 29-11-2024 0-0 seems worth a point punt, Mac. Sorry. RE: West Bromwich Albion Deepdale 30/11/2024 - themaclad - 30-11-2024 Preston North End 1 Riis West Bromwich Albion 1 Grant Attendance: 16,124 (2,932 West Brom fans). Referee: Mr T Bramall. In the end probably a fair result as both sides won the half that they actually turned up in, at the end the home fans were probably happier with the result, than the Albion support in the Kop who were less than impressed with their teams second half showing FIRST HALF We were second best virtually throughout, it looked all too easy when Albion took the lead early on, ball behind the full back, Grant in acres of space chipped Cornell who was in no mans land. One down and the portents at that stage of the game were not looking good. Albion passed and moved the ball at pace, had players moving into space and looked like they could score at any given moment. We passed the ball about at the back and waited and waitedfor anyone to actually move. Only Thor in midfield seemed to want the ball, only surprise was that Albion didn't add a second, theer were glimpses of hope, Thor, KKH and Greenwood linked up to provide a great chance for Bowler at the back post, he beat the keeper but his effort was cleared from the line, otherwise it was a similar performance to what we have endured in the last couple of seasons SECOND HALF Whiteman off and Keane on, no idea what was said at half time, but it worked absolutely ripped into Albion, corner after corner and we were deservedly level on 55 minutes, Bowler found Greenwood, ball to Riis, right foot shot level. All us now, Palmer denied, Greenwood, Hughes who also had a goalbound shot deflected away for a corner. Only looked amatter of time but we nearly gifted them another, shocker of a pass, Maja brought down, quick free allowed to be taken they had three on the keeper and Cornell denied them, he also had to deal with a deflected effort at the end. Probably the best 45 minutes we have lobbed in, in recent weeks. Pity about the first half. HECKY Paul Heckingbottom felt North End were the better team throughout the 1-1 draw against West Brom. The Baggies took the lead in the early stages of the first half through Karlan Grant and took that advantage into the break with them. PNE, however, came out and put the visitors under all sorts of pressure in the second half and got their rewards through a superb Emil Riis strike. More chances followed but a second goal didn’t quite arrive and the points were shared. Hecky said: “I'm upset we've only taken a point when I thought we were the better team throughout the game, especially in the second half. “When you go behind, you always want to make sure you show the mentality to get back in. We did more than enough to win the game in those moments. “It's the same interview I've given you in a lot of games where probably 90 to 95% of the games since we've been here, that I’ve felt we've been the better team and not come away with three points.” The Lilywhites’ best opportunity in the first half came through Josh Bowler, who saw an effort cleared off the line. Will Keane was then introduced at half-time in place of Ben Whiteman which seemed to really change the tempo of the game and PNE were quickly the side with the better of the play. Asked why the substitution was made, Hecky said: “To get Keano in there. Sam (Greenwood) was already trying to play in there. Emil was on the back line, with Josh wide. I think putting Keano in there as well, it just occupies another defender. “I just want us to be brave and risk the ball more into those spaces and we did it at times in the first half. After 20 minutes or so, we started to get Ali and Stef (Stefán Thórdarson) higher. When we did, we didn’t have the quality in the final third or bodies in the box. “Josh blazed over, Kaine (Kesler-Hayden) blazed over. That was sort of the pattern. The one time we were patient and got bodies in and took out a good ball, Josh has that one cleared off the line. “In the second half, we were just a lot more forceful. We risked the ball more and just made them defend a lot more.” PNE have in recent matches attacked the Kop in the second half, but in this one were back to the norm in attacking the Town End, who were right behind their team in the second half. Hecky said: “I thought the atmosphere was great today and we want more of it. I've said before how much the crowd help us and I think they underestimate how important they are. “From my first game here against Luton, they helped us get over the line in the last ten minutes. Today, with the corners as the game wore on, it felt like they were just determined to suck the ball in. “The energy it gives the players when they're attacking the ball, it was vital. We've been here 2-0 up against Norwich and you could hear a pin drop. That's not what we want. We want the same thing, which is goals. We all want the same thing which is three points. “We need to be fighting together to make sure we get that. The fans role in it, I think, can't be underestimated.” CARLOS Carlos Corberán believes Albion didn't manage the first 15 to 20 minutes of the second half well enough on Saturday afternoon at Deepdale. The Baggies were held to a 1-1 draw by Preston North End in the Sky Bet Championship, with Karlan Grant opening the scoring inside 20 minutes before Emil Riis' equaliser ten minutes into the second period. Corberán's men performed well in the first 45, but the hosts came out firing after the break and deservedly found a leveller. The boss says it's a pity his team couldn't prevent Preston getting back into the encounter and admits Albion could have much offered more in Lancashire. Carlos Corberán on the touchline at Preston North End Carlos said: “It’s one point that of course is not enough to be in a better position in the table. It was necessary to add more than just one point today. “In general, the first half was more positive than negative. In the second half, we suffered too much in the first 15 minutes until we found a way back into the game. “We didn’t find the right solution to the set-pieces and the second balls. They have created difficulties which we should’ve managed better. We have lost the option to win the three points in these moments of the game. “In the second part of the second half we recovered the feeling that we could attack, but in general, the first 15 to 20 minutes of the second half were the most difficult moments of the game. “We expected them to come out strongly at the start of the second period because every time that you compete well, especially away, the opponents need to provide a reaction. Carlos Corberán walking down the touchline at Deepdale “They adapted some things, but we need to have an immediate reaction to anything that can happen. “Football for me is not about fair results. It’s one game where we should have competed and performed better to get a better result. “I always analyse games. We are frustrated that we didn’t manage the first minutes of the second half better. We know we need to improve and it’s a pity we didn’t manage these key minutes of the game. “When you step on to the pitch you want to win the three points. We are disappointed but will take the responsibility ourselves. We know we have to make more things happen to win more games.” RE: West Bromwich Albion Deepdale 30/11/2024 - talkSAFT - 01-12-2024 Thanks, Mac ![]() RE: West Bromwich Albion Deepdale 30/11/2024 - themaclad - 02-12-2024 ![]() |
