Captain - pieandabovril - 12-02-2015
By all reports,our new Captain,Fletcher,had a big,positive influence on the pitch last night against Swansea.We have debated on here before about the value of a motivational Captain,and I think we have found one at last.
Looking back,I cant remember all that many influencial Captains in recent times.Brunt was hardly in that capacity,and did he superceed Carson? Cant remember now,but who has impressed you as a Captain of the Baggies in recent times?

McInnes was probably the best in my lifetime.
Seemed like it anyway... Never really know what influence the likes of Brunt have in the
dressing room - but he never seemed like captain material with his demeanor on the pitch.

Was going to start a thread about this myself today. With the utmost respect for the service players like Brunt and Olsson have given us over the years, over the last couple of seasons they haven't looked like leaders on the pitch at all. Their body language every time we hit a setback was awful, and they rarely seemed to influence players around them positively. (I always felt Scharner was a far bigger leader on the pitch than either of them, and we really missed him when he left). The difference with Fletcher and Lescott on board is immense; going 1-0 up last night, for the first time in ages, we didn't hit the reset button and start dropping off. We hunted for the second goal, got it, and when we finally did drop back to defend, we didn't look likely to concede at all. Fletcher is Pulis's voice on the pitch, and it really feels like the mentality is starting to change as a result.

I think it's also a bit of a masterstroke for TP to haul in the senior players - I think it was Foster, Lescott, Brunt and Fletcher (would've had Mozza in there too myself) to get them to pull together and show support and encouragement to the rest on the field. Used to be done naturally, but there we go. IMO this is going to be the single most important thing to get us out of trouble - team spirit, determination and all playing to each other's strengths

I couldn't help wondering if there was something to be read between the lines on the omission of Mozza and Jonas from the "senior pros" meeting. We may never know the full story behind the fabled dressing room clique of the last few years, but I sense the gang of four Pulis is using to police the dressing room is intended to smash any last vestiges of player power. He won't be undermined; he's picking some sergeants he can trust to keep order in the ranks.

Yes he was Pie or at least so says my Tony Matthews Book.
He is probably still the most capped England player (23) while still at West Brom.(Saido take note)
What a pity that his great reputation as a very cultured full back was sullied by his disastrous time as Manager of our Club.
I know how old I am and it's not funny!
