MANAGER

He joined the coaching staff at Rotherham in May 2012 upon his retirement from professional football.[11] During his time playing for Diss Town, Warne coached children at Diss Town FC through his former coaching business, Pass Soccer.

Rotherham United
In November 2012, Warne was granted a testimonial by Rotherham United for giving the club many years of service including as player, coach and joint caretaker-manager.[12]

On 28 November 2016, after the resignation of Kenny Jackett, Warne was appointed caretaker manager of Rotherham United.[13] On 13 January 2017, Warne was appointed Rotherham United manager until the end of the 2016–17 season.[14] On 5 April 2017, with Rotherham's relegation from the Championship confirmed Warne was appointed permanent manager of the club on a one-year rolling contract.[15] During his time as manager, Rotherham, were relegated from and won promotion to the Championship on three occasions each, with promotions in 2018, 2020 and 2022 following relegations in 2017, 2019, and 2021. He also won the 2022 EFL Trophy.

Warne's final game as Millers manager was a 0–0 away to Middlesbrough on 17 September 2022 which left Rotherham 8th in the Championship after 9 games;[16] he left the club five days later and dropped down a division to manage League One Derby County.

Derby County
2022–23: Play-off near miss
After interim manager Liam Rosenior was relieved of his duties, EFL League One side Derby County Football Club, recently saved by local businessman David Clowes, approached Rotherham United to request permission to speak to Warne.[17][18] Paul Warne was officially announced by Derby County as their new head coach on a four-year deal on 22 September 2022, after The Rams agreed a compensation package with Rotherham for Warne, alongside Assistant Head Coach Richie Barker, First Team Coach Matt Hamshaw, and First Team Goalkeeper Coach Andy Warrington.[2] Following a stellar January that saw Derby have a 100% record, rising to within touching distance of breaking into the automatic promotion picture, Warne was awarded the League One Manager of the Month award for the third time, his first time with Derby County.[19] Form collapsed after this, however, and Warne oversaw just six wins in the final 18 games as Derby finished the season in 7th place, the joint lowest league finish in the club history, and missed out on a playoff place by one place and point.[20] Warne called the season a "failure".[21]

2023–24: Promotion from League One
Warne rebuilt the Derby squad in summer 2023 ahead of the 2023–24 season with 12 players signed,[22] with players such as Curtis Davies,[23] David McGoldrick[24] and Jason Knight departing.[25] Derby suffered a bad start to the season, losing their first three games at Pride Park Stadium 2–1 in the league to Wigan Athletic and to Oxford United by the same score, as well as 2–0 loss to Blackpool in the EFL Cup in between, Warne after this defeat said that he felt like player heads were being turned by transfer speculation.[26] Derby suffered a spate of injuries in first two months of the season[27] and after the first 11 games of the League One season, found themselves in 9th place and 10 points behind leaders Portsmouth, Warne said the club were behind their target and demanded improvement from squad on 11 October 2023.[28] The team subsequently lost 1–0 away to Shrewsbury Town leaving the pre-season promotion favourites 11th in the table and with questions starting to arise regarding Warne's future,[29] though the club later came out in support of the manager.[30] On 14 November 2023, Derby were knocked out of the first round of the FA Cup after a first round replay at home to Crewe Alexandra, the first time the club have been eliminated at this stage since the 1984–85 season,[31] Warne found his team "unpredictable" as they impressed in a league win 3–0 at home to Barnsley three days earlier,[31] Warne called his players for an extra days training on the Thursday after the cup tie.[31] Warne ended 2023 with a nine-game unbeaten league run, winning eight of these matches which moved Derby up to 4th place in the table and two points off the automatic promotion places.[32] This impressive end to the year saw him win the Manager of the Month award for December 2023.[33] In early 2024 Derby found themselves in second place in the table but in February 2024, after Derby's first back-to-back league defeats at Barnsley and at home to Charlton Athletic, Warne warned his players that they needed to improve if they wanted to stay in the automatic promotion places.[34] Derby responded well to this message, with Derby winning their first four league matches in March and after a 1–0 win to promotion rivals Bolton Wanderers, Warne was delighted with the result but told his players not get carried away with Derby being four points clear of third place with seven league games remaining.[35] Having won five from six across the month, he was awarded the Manager of the Month award.[36] Warne achieved his fourth promotion from League One to the Championship after a 2–0 win at home to Carlisle United on the last day of the season confirmed Derby would be promoted as runners-up with their highest ever points tally.[37][38]

2024–25
Ahead of the 2024–25 season, Warne released seven first team players from the previous campaign including captain Conor Hourihane, midfielder Korey Smith, whilst first-choice goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith and midfielder Louie Sibley rejected a contract offers.[39] Derby signed 11 players in the summer transfer window,[40] however delays in some of these transfers until after the season started lead Warne to warn that his side was not Championship ready in mid-August after picking up a single win in the clubs first three Championship matches, as well as a second round EFL Cup defeat to League Two Barrow.[41] However, on 31 August 2024, Derby beat Bristol City 3–0 at Pride Park with Warne describing it as 'the best Derby performance I’ve seen since I’ve been here', this lead Derby to gain six points in the first month of the season over four matches.[42] On 7 November 2024, following the dismissal of Mark Robins at Coventry City, Warne became the longest serving active manager of the teams of the EFL Championship.

Plenty of time for this guy talks a lot of sense

The Fitness Test

Will Keane has returned to training after missing the previous two months with a thigh injury and should be in contention to feature on Saturday.

Liam Lindsay, who was forced off through injury just before the break, is “touch and go”, however Robbie Brady isn’t ready for a return.

Aside from the injury front, Milutin Osmajić will also be back available to manager Paul Heckingbottom after serving his eight-match suspension.

The Rams

After two seasons in League One, Derby County have returned to the second tier and they’ve adjusted well to life back in the Championship.

Under Paul Warne, they’ve lost just once in their last seven league matches, with wins over QPR and Coventry City coming within that run of fixtures.

There’ll be a return to Deepdale for Tom Barkhuizen, too, for the first time since his departure in 2022, after making 209 appearances for PNE over a five-and-a-half-year period.

The Officials

Referee: David Webb
Assistant Referees: Jonathan Hunt and Hristo Karaivanov
Fourth Official: Zac Kennard-Kettle

David Webb will referee North End for the first time this season on Saturday.

The last time he took charge of a PNE fixture was in February 2024, in a 2-2 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Deepdale.

In total so far this season, Webb has shown 28 yellow cards in 11 matches.

THE BOSS

Paul Heckingbottom is looking forward to the competition in the forward positions hotting up as Milutin Osmajić and Will Keane come back into contention.

North End have been without Osmajić for the previous eight matches due to suspension, while Keano’s been sidelined since the end of September.

Due to those lack of options, almost all of the workload has fallen on the shoulders of Emil Riis, but with the striking duo returning – as well as Ched Evans also now being an option – there are decisions to be made.

Hecky Looking Forward To Return Of Striking DuoPaul Heckingbottom is looking forward to the competition in the forward positions hotting up as Milutin Osmajic and Will Keane come back into contention.

On Milly in particular, Hecky said: “I spoke to him about it (the ban). He's let us all down: himself, me, the club, players, staff.

“But he also understands when he's been watching the games in the spell he's been missing that we've been creating chances. He's been feeling that because he knows he would have been scoring goals, and he would have been helping the team.

“We've all suffered from it. He's got to learn from it and got to make sure it doesn't happen again. That’s it. Hopefully now moving forward, he can pick up from where he left off.

“We were really pleased with him when we came through the door. He's a little bit different in some ways, but we thought he responded really well. We started to see him scoring goals and then we've been without him.

“It'll help everyone. It’ll help Emil, who’s had to do a really good shift. It helps the team and he helps us make changes from the bench. It’s important that we get not only him back but also Will to share that workload and create that competition.”

In other injury news, the weekend will likely come too soon for Robbie Brady to return and central defender Liam Lindsay is “touch and go” due to the injury he picked up just before the break.

It’s Derby County who come to Deepdale on Saturday, looking to continue their positive start to the campaign, following their promotion from League One last season. They sit 12th after the first 15 matches of the season.

Hecky said: “I know the management team there well. It doesn’t surprise me at all that they've been picking up points. It doesn’t surprise me how they’ve been playing. It doesn't surprise me where the threats come from. I knew they'd be fine.

“I knew they'd be stronger at home than away and they'll want to change that just as we do.

“The players they added in the summer were good and they’re really good fits for what Warney (Paul Warne) tries to do as well in terms of personality and that team ethic.

“But without me being disrespectful, and I’m paying them big compliments, all I’m really bothered about is what we do and how we perform, just as I have been against all the other opponents as well.

“We need to make sure that we perform at our best, play at our best and make sure it's a tough day for them.”

MACS VIEW

No more international football until March we can now have a proper run at this, definitely need to win a few more although we rarely beat this lot, Fang back which will create a bit of competition up front personal view Ledson needs to start but we shall see on Saturday

Attendance: 16,646 (3,363 Derby County fans).

Referee: Mr D Webb.

A game which got worse as it wore on, can't say either side deserved to win, to say chances were at a premium in the second half is an understatement, two shots from Derby one from Harness in the last minute which went just over the bar, we created next to nothing in the second pperiod, spent the entire half playing at a snails pace we passed it around the back three as they waited for any movement in front of them, it did not come and we made it easy for Derby to sit deep and wait for us to lose the ball.
The first period was actually entertaining on a day truly awaul weather, Storm Bert had deposited thounds of gallons of water on the pitch and probably the star performer of the day look in top condition after he game.

Fast paced first half we started well Riis had an effort from 35 yards went wide, looked the more likely to score and halfway through the half we did, ball in from the left ball looped over giant visitors keeper Zetterstrom. Lead didn't last long not so sure whether Yates was offside but no whistle and he headed home from close range.
Greenwood forced a save from Zetterstrom and we had a few corners but all square at half time, push on in the second half, didn't happen, bit of disastisfactin at the end.
Cold and wet through, Stoke on Tuesday roll on the hyperthermia

THE BOSS

Paul Heckingbottom felt his side weren’t creative enough to go and get the three points against Derby County.

His team were made to settle for a point on home turf after Jerry Yates cancelled out a well-taken header by Sam Greenwood.

The goalscorer came closest to scoring a winner for North End with a curling strike shortly before the break, however there weren’t many opportunities created in the second half to go and win the game.

Hecky said: “The game didn't surprise us at all. We knew it was going to be a real battle and we'd have to stand up. My disappointment is that I thought we had control in the first half without really opening them up.

“We scored a really good goal and then within six or seven minutes we concede from what their threat is, which we know. Once again, Freddie's not had a save to make and we've conceded and we're coming away with a point.

“That's a frustration but I can't stand here and say that we opened them up enough to take the three points. Obviously, we defended well if Freddie's not having a save to make. The one moment we didn't, we conceded.

“At the other end, we weren't creative enough. I know Derby will say how well they've defended. I get that and they have. They made it really, really difficult for us but we didn't open them up enough times or have enough pressure and touches in their box to force that goal.”

In the second half, Kaine Kesler-Hayden and the returning Milutin Osmajić had half-chances in the 64th minute, but aside from that, the Derby goal remained unchallenged in the second period.

The match became physical and scrappy at times, which is something that didn’t surprise the North End boss with how the Rams have done so far this season.

Hecky said: “That's what they're very good at. If you watch any of their games, they’re so, so tight. Whether they win by a single goal, they draw or lose by a single goal, that's how they play. They're very, very effective at it.

“They’ve got to earn every single bit and don't give you a thing. That's their identity. That's what they do.

“I want to give them big credit for that, but likewise I've also seen enough games to see that they do usually pose a lot more problems. That's why I'm so frustrated that one shot on our goal – well, not even a shot. It's a second ball from a set play and we've conceded.

“We were good without the ball, had decent control in the first half with the ball, but we didn't create enough really good goalscoring opportunities which is credit to them and also where we need to be better.”

Derby County manager Paul Warne told BBC Radio Derby:

"Away from home, you don't want to lose points. We tried to win.

"I made all the subs to make us more aggressive, more attacking but we just came up short.

"That's no disrespect because this team just finished outside the play-offs last year. It's a really good assembled squad so the lads should take some real praise for that."
