Sheff Wed vs WBA - Match Thread - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 26-04-2024

The last seven days have clarified much for Albion, who'll now be virtually assured of a playoff berth with just one win from the remaining two matches. The same, however, could be said about survival for this weekend's hosts, Sheffield Wednesday, who've finally hoisted themselves out of the drop zone with a four-game unbeaten run, but need a good three points yet to consolidate that position.

On paper that's not an easy task for them: they're winless in the last nine against Albion and goalless in five of those matches, including the most recent two. The Owls have also failed to beat any top six side all season, conceding 24 goals in eleven encounters, and last got the better of Albion on home soil way back in autumn 2006. Indeed, since that fateful November day the Baggies have racked up as many league victories at Hillsborough as they did in the half-century preceding it, so with all of that in mind, it should really come as no surprise if Saturday's fixture ends up being 3-0 to Sheffield Wednesday.

It's April, the form books are on the bonfire, the ground is carpeted with banana skins, and Albion are Albion. But having shown plenty of mettle at Leicester last week, hopefully more of the same will be enough to see us through.

Interesting comments from Corberan in a press conference today:

"Express & Star revealed that Corberan entered his Sheffield Wednesday presser this week with a piece of paper in his hand.

On the piece of paper was two graphs; one showing the form table from the last 25 games in the Championship, and the other showing the form table since Röhl took charge of the Owls.

Corberan said:

“I bring this, which normally I don’t. It was what I showed to my team today. Everyone in football sees the table. Look, they are down and you are up. The people think that there is this distance.

“In the last 25 games, which is more than half of the league, we are in the position seventh. They are in position eighth. Sheffield in that time have achieved 37 points. More than Hull City, or Middlesbrough, or Preston.

“They have achieved 37, we have achieved 40. Only three points difference in the last 25 games. You are going to play against this team.

“We aren’t playing against the Sheffield from the beginning, who couldn’t achieve results – we are playing a team that are with us, fighting to survive. We are fighting to achieve a play-off position. The game is going to be a very, very challenging and demanding game.”

Is he using this for motivation and to avoid complacency or is he getting his excuses in early??? Big Grin

Huge game for us, its a complete sell out so 31k Owls fans there that will be making a lot of noise and hoping to be the 12th man. You guys will make the playoffs without the need for these points, treat us gently accordingly please!! As a goodwill gesture I will not slate him for calling us Sheffield!!!

SCO, King Carlos calling you Sheffield is a compliment, it means you are the team from that city, it’s your city, united are just that, united, they are lodgers, unwelcome, unwanted guests. Have not forgotten, have not forgiven them for The battle of Bramall lane. They are like the vile, interlopers in Birmingham’s city, having said that good luck in your survival fight except today, hope you stay up, wanted the clay heads gone but you can’t have everything.

Tough game for both sides and nerves may play a big part, the crowd will be a big help or a big hindrance, if we score fast and early, up the anti, it may work in our favour.

Come on you baggies.

Not good so far Norwich turned it around we're down to sixth Hull still to play. May need to win our last game. 45 to go, hope we find our shooting boots.

Shooting boots ! Need to get in a position to shoot first ! Can’t even defend ! Heads dropped, we really have gone off the boil in the last month. 4 subs !!! Wallace, Phillips, M’villa and Townsend

3-0
Final day cup final

We have to hope Ipswich our back on form tonight. The way it's going only Norwich will have confidence going into the play offs. We may miss out again.

If we make the playoffs then we show no bottle and don’t stand a chance of winning high pressure games.

Love the fact that we are where we are (compared to what we feared at the start of the season) but this is a message to CC and the club about summer investments.

Oh dear

RE: Sheff Wed vs WBA - Match Thread - Salopbaggie - 27-04-2024

Well as good as we were against Leicester we were that poor against Sheffield, did not quite get the starting line up but I will not criticise CC, I am sure he had his reasons.
