The vital and necessary win over Rotherham on Wednesday, coupled with results going our way elsewhere, puts our fate firmly back in our own hands as we head into the final month of the regular season. Coventry and Preston have nine points to make up on us from only fifteen available to them, meaning that a maximum of two more wins - in reality, probably less - will assure us of a playoff place.

As we'd ideally like to avoid it coming down to the last match against Preston, there's no better time to get cracking than against Sunderland this weekend. Losing to them in the corresponding fixture last spring was a rare blip, the first time they'd won at the Hawthorns since 2007; though they followed it up with another victory at the Stadium of Light in the winter, and are thus hunting their first league double over us since that 2006-07 campaign, they're now winless in the last three matches.

It has, however, also been a disciplined spell for the Black Cats on either side of Easter with four clean sheets in five, three of which ended as no-score draws; the glaring exception was a 5-1 hammering at the hands of Blackburn, so the Great Wall of Wearside is there to be breached for teams with the ability to do it. I'd expect Mike Dodds to set up for the clean sheet once again and see if his side can snatch a goal on the break, but hopefully Albion have got the momentum after Wednesday to get the job done.

Results go our way and we could be confirmed in the play offs tomorrow barring any major goal difference collapse. The season has gone better than I thought it would do way back in August.
To win the play offs is still a bit of a fantasy, for the older readers out there, “the plane, the plane”.
Hope springs eternal. We are not ready for the greed league but golly do we need the extra blood money.
I’d rather be a big fish in a smaller pond than a tiddler in a big ocean.
Oh I long for the days of a level playing field …… non biased league administrators and a good competition.

Another sensible factual post.
Great job

Our first red card of the season. Two yellows in two minutes for BTA. Seems he may have lost his head. Going to be tough from here. On the brighter side blues are beating Coventry 2-0.

Now a goal down. That hill gets tougher.

Half time. Need a rocket up the proverbial and a re-shuffle. Could be three defeats on the bounce to Sunderland.

Been well on top until the last five minutes. A goal down, penetrating the black cats back four will be a lot harder.

Sure CC knows what he's doing, but can't understand why he's taken Mikey off, nor Diangana. Wallace and Gromit Swift on instead.

Norwich late winner, defeat for us, saving grace is the three nil thumping Coventry recieved at blues. We may loose fifth place next week, a moment of madness from BTA cost us when we were well on top.

Only three teams, Hull, Coventry and Preston can get more points than us, boro can match our current points total but their goal difference is twenty less than us. Each have four to play, Hull our 7 points behind us and the other two our nine. We should edge the play offs although we’re not in great form to win them.

My concern after the 1-0 defeat, is that if we stay in 5th we'll have to play Southampton - does anyone think we'll beat them?

Asante being sent off with only a few games to go ain't clever.. what a fool.

Haven't seen the sending off, but, unless it's petulant, arguing with the referee, or plain dirty play, I'd be loathed to criticise JUST because of being at this stage of the season - it's an emotional game and IMHO it's good to see commitment and passion for the team.
Probably hopelessly wrong here!

RE: WBA vs Sunderland - Match Thread - 4evaabaggie - 13-04-2024

Drewks haven’t seen it but I read somewhere that he had had a bad touch, lost the ball and in chasing to get it back pulled their player down. A minute after being booked, gave the ref no other option.
BTA is still having trouble controlling the ball, couldn’t trap a bag of cement.
His over enthusiasm cost us the game, up until then they were apparently not in it.

The positive to be taken from today's game is that hopefully means we have seen the end of BTA.

The guy is useless.

So many moves break down with his inability to hold the ball and perform simple lay offs.

And while he is our top scorer, he needs 3 or 4 easy chances for every goal.

The sending off just proves his brain is in line with his ability, non existent.

The downside is that it could cost us our place in the playoffs...

Two away games in Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday will be tough for different reasons. Especially with our form. If Hull win their games they will be knocking on the door.

But if we are able to hold out and make the playoffs. We'll have more chance without BTA in the side.

With BTA scoring despite playing dreadfully in previous games, it was difficult for Corberan to drop him. It's easy now.
