WBA vs Wigan & Huddersfield - Match Thread - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 06-03-2023

Having been to Hull and back on Friday night in more ways than one, it's probably for the best that we're hastening back to hearth and home this week with back to back matches at the Hawthorns: first the postponed visit of Wigan on Tuesday night, closely followed by Huddersfield on Saturday. Both teams are adrift at the foot of the table, but also coming to that point in the season when miraculous wins over complacent sides breathe fresh life into the relegation fight.
Wigan in particular are becoming an infuriating thorn in Albion's side, as our 2-0 home win at Christmas 2018 remains our only league win in the last six against them, and the Latics have taken three points on three of their last four Hawthorns visits. Yet given the recent form of the two teams, a repeat of those results would be a startling reversal: Albion's home record since November has been redoubtable, while in the same time, Wigan have been winless on the road and accrued a mere five points.
Huddersfield's woes encompass consecutive 4-0 defeats on the last two weekends, and no wins on their travels since Boxing Day. I'll leave it to their fans to fill in the blanks on what looks like a disastrous season, but come Saturday, Albion again need to hunt for the win if the playoffs are to remain a realistic objective. Injuries are the Achilles heel that contributed to our Friday night slip, and they could easily be our undoing again, but hopefully our home mojo will see us through this week with flying colours.

We are having to recall on loan under 21 Mo Faal now, in order to make up a full squad alongside Jovan Malcolm and Rico Richards. It is also looking even more like, as I mentioned in my pre game Hull post, Diangana's season is over, the club now just waiting for a second opinion.

I hope we can avoid this tonight, but it seems a problem all through the club - the defence faffing around and getting themselves into trouble. Just watched Newcastle's first goal against the kids and it's shocking.
Good win in the end though, but Toon's keeper made Button look like Gordon Banks.

Derby, rather a five nil, our defence needs a confidence boost, at the moment when we concede our defence becomes a jigsaw, they go to pieces in the box. An old joke but very appropriate right now.

Well, as I predicted, we thrashed Wigan 1 - 0, seems it was a harder win than it should have been. 17 shots, a massive 4 on target. We may scrape into the play-off but unless we get some injured players back it may be in vain.

A win’s a win, but oh god that was underwhelming to say the least. Really don’t see this team challenging for the playoffs, and even if they scrape in, promotion is way off.
Unfortunately promotion is a must to make us an attractive proposition for any new owner, and that is what we so desperately need whilst there’s still a club to invest in.
But back to tonight, and really nothing to shout about, some to be expected poor performances from the usual suspects,
but must give credit where it’s due to young Griffiths. Looked more confident and quite assured.
