Great game - Dancingwilldoit - 08-01-2023

Had a feeling of deja Vu after 90 secs, it had Stamford Bridge vibes. We took about 5 mins to settle down but when we did we really took the game to them. We were outstanding and we'll deserved to go go in 3-2 up at halftime. With a bit more luck it could have been a much bigger lead.
Every player ran themselves into the ground. The support was superb and I think last week we must have been saving ourselves.
Any neutral watching would have thought that the team in blue were the championship club. WBA knew they had a game on their hands and threw all the big boy's on early in the second half. It made little difference we still have them a lesson.
For once we had a good ref even though she missed a blatant pen and their 3rd goalscorer should have been sent off for elbowing King in the face.
It was just one of those days. I left the ground proud to be a Spireite. The last few years have been dire with little or nothing to cheer about but boy did yesterday make up for it.
The only negative is that on yesterdays performance we will probably lose a few players this transfer window.

Is it be kind to women day? If a male ref' had missed a blatant penalty and allowed an equalising goal to be scored after our full back had been laid low by a deliberate elbow to the face you'd hardly have been able to type for sheer fury! If she'd looked like David Elleray you'd have been advocating the Mussolini position from the nearest lamp post on Sheff Road. (A lot of the National League will have been smiling about the elbow on king).

I think Carlos Corberan has learned something about the actual level of National League teams. Coventry as I expected couldn't handle Wrexham. I don't fancy Accrington in the replay with Boreham Wood. Eddie Howe threw his first chance of winning the cup away by underestimating Wednesday (and why Cardiff are loaning out a better centre back than they themselves have is a mystery to me). Mark Cooper displayed absolute idiocy at Blackpool and may have destroyed all the good vibes he'd created recently. And FFS when will teams learn that playing out from the back ALL THE TIME, especially with passes under five yards is a recipe for disaster? Why on earth would you keep giving a ball to the feet of your least able outfield player in search of creativity? Your keeper may dream of being Zidane, but if he was he would be running your midfield. It is screamingly obvious to every spectator in the ground that there is going to be a fck-up yet they continue and the irony is that this way of playing is a direct result of a rule introduced to reduce back passes which has massively increased them in terms of their effect upon games.

We always used to play out from the back too when we could, but the keeper threw the ball to a man in space. Now you mishit a dribbly pass to a man facing the wrong direction and unaware he has a man on his back. Working well. Lunatics and the asylum spring to mind.

The ref missed the penalty incident but shit happens. Even so compared to the usual quality we get lumbered with she was a saint. The elbow incident was off the ball but one of the linesman should have seen it. I don't think it makes any difference that she was female she was just good and kept the game flowing.
Maybe If the goal they scored was a winning one I might have said different.

It looked as though she was refereeing quite well a lot of the time but the truth is she turned a 4-2 win to us into a 3-3 draw with two huge mistakes.

It was only one little football a yard over the line that David Elleray got wrong, prevented us deservedly going to Wembley, that we've talked about ever since and may well have motivated his lead role in VAR and goal line technology.

They were monster, game-changing errors. In gymnastics it would be the equivalent of falling off the beam twice. That triple back flip and the complex perfect twisting dismount just don't make up for the major deductions.

I'm a big believer in going with the referee and accepting the rough with the smooth, because that's sport. That's the lesson it teaches us about life. But if we want refereeing to be as good and accurate as possible, assessing two major errors as less important than the series of minor errors most National League referees seem to make throughout games seems odd. If Fitzsimmons had dropped the ball in our net twice you'd have been apoplectic ..........

It all depends how you see it Dev. From my seat in the East Stand I thought King dived and I didn't see the elbow incident. I left the ground disappointed but not with either incident. I didn't see them until later.
With Ellary the linesman flagged a goal and he ignored him. I was there and I felt robbed.

RE: Great game - Devongone - 10-01-2023

Refereeing is enormously difficult. I'm sure Elleray's giant error was honest. I'm also sure being a Harrow schoolmaster didn't help either our perception of him, or his own ability to consider he might be getting it wrong and taking a look to the linesman for help. I suspect he's one of those men who is prone to think they are always right.

Saturday's ref was unfortunate because she got just two things wrong and they absolutely swung the game. I'm sure taking past form into account King had been winding Asante up. We usually benefit from this kind of thing. For once we suffered by it. The penalty? Well any sensible competition would either have VAR, or not. Had it been operating it looked a pen. Without VAR her job and the linesman's was to see it and make a decision. If they saw it then they didn't see it properly.

I'm sure she could become a good ref' but she needs to be aware that in a game in which she might have been heading for an 8 out of 10, two major errors turned the performance into a 4 or a 5. But that's how you learn and refereeing is tough.

Replay isn't on TV. BBC gone with Wolves vs Liverpool and ITV with Cardiff vs Leeds again. Sometimes Emirates FA Cup show matches on a stream on YouTube or Facebook page so our replay or someone else might be shown on there. What I do find odd is Wolves and West Brom are playing at home at the same time.
