Ron Gourlay is making all the right noises. - Salopbaggie - 08-03-2022

The Express and star are reporting that " Ron Gourlay believes Albion’s fans are embarrassed by their football club – with the new chief executive vowing to make changes that will see their pride restored."

The big change seems to be around recruitment, he believes that the transfer strategy and identifying players is one area where big change is needed and while they are not planning on employing a Director of Football in the normal sense, they are looking likely to appoint a head of football operations whose duties will primarily involve identifying players..

Gourlay believes the recruitment decisions should be made by committee, comprising of himself, the manager, medical, financial and administrative experts as well as members of the recruitment team.

“We have made mistakes in the past and we are paying for that at the present time. We have got to get a mixture of recruitment, medical, secretarial, administration, the football side and financial all having a say to make sure we bring in the right players going forward."

He is also saying that, one area of recruitment Albion desperately need to improve is identifying overseas players. Albion previously had a network of international scouts, but they moved away from that model during Tony Pulis’s time as head coach. (Josh fancy a job Smile)

It's promising that he's identified this huge problem we've had since Dan Ashworth.
Some of the Recruitment has been an absolute disgrace.
My mind won't allow me to name and merit the players brought in since DA, so......

Can someone list the Incoming players over the last 5 years (with Transfer Fees, but without the Salaries!!) and award marks out of 10.
My guess is that the average marks will be about 4/10.

I think I’m right in saying that Pereira is the only one of those we made a profit on. That’s atrocious

Wow what a list and I suspect very few 7 or more ratings.

Rumour is that Bruce is going to extend contract and could be a longer term manager, assuming he starts to get better results.

If the recruitment of players improves and performances on the pitch start to improve. Is that something we can tolerate.

Better football. A chance of promotion next season. Bruce in charge.

Thanks for those very interesting stats, Ska'd.
Was thinking we could swiftly use those stats - then fans' marks out of 10 - to evaluate our Management's abilities. But you also need Salary cost etc, and Sale, to put anything into perspective.

eg BURKE:

Cost less Transfer Out:    13.68 - 2 (?? say)
Salary etc:    (say) 3
Total Cost:  14.68
Marks out of 10:  (say) 3
Value Score:    3  divided by  14.68  =  0.2

whereas GAYLE might score 8 divided by 4.8 (say) = 1.66

These stats mean nothing out of context, though, because you could mark DeBruyne with a 9 and divide by his costs of (I dunno) 45, and he gets the same Value Score 0.2 as Burke. Laugh

I'll stick to what I'm good at: Doh farting!

Talk is cheap, he has taken Dowling's original speech and repeated it.
