Stop-gap maybe? - Devongone - 01-03-2022 Are we just a stop-gap in Paul Cook's successful career? I hope tonight I'm proved wrong, but it seems like he's just going through the motions. Perhaps it is just that he's thinking he'll re-build over the summer and make this his team, playing his way and win the league. Maybe? After all he's no experience of taking over someone else's successful team, playing in a different way from his own and building on it. Watching us against Yeovil I felt we were completely absent. Asante was trying and Kellerman produced probably the most sublime piece of skill in his career, but we couldn't string three passes together, and when attempting a long ball we were missing by yards. We had no definable strategy, no approach to attacking that made me think we could ever score and we were generally outplayed by a journeyman Yeovil side. How Adam Virgo could award Kellerman MOM for one piece of skill in a very ordinary performance I don't know. How anyone could not see that Yeovil's Knowles was head and shoulders the best player on the pitch is beyond me at least. We looked tired and lacking in confidence. We gave every indication of simply waiting to fail. Something bad was going to happen soon. But we won. Maybe that was our low-point and much better is now on the way. Maybe. Nevertheless Paul Cook's low-key return worries me. Is he hoping when the end-of-season managerial merry-go-round starts that he might get a proper job? On Saturday it seemed like the team reflected its manager. None of them were really there. What do you think? RE: Stop-gap maybe? - Dancingwilldoit - 01-03-2022 Our squad was built around 3 at the back PC prefers a back 4 as he played Tuesday. It was obvious that things were going to take a while to come together. Tonight will be a bigger test. Let's see if we can raise our game. If not I will be seriously worried. RE: Stop-gap maybe? - Devongone - 02-03-2022 I can't believe we beat Notts County like that. The players obviously have heart. I am afraid it was much more than the shape of the team. They were nothing like a Paul Cook team against Yeovil. In fact they weren't like a team, except that they kept trying. Had you told me there were seven new signings out there I'd have believed you. The game was summed up when the ball flew out of play towards Paul Cook. He killed it stone dead in one superb moment of control. He always was a lovely player. I'd have given him MOM over Kellerman. I hope Cookie really does want to be on Sheffield Road. This season I'm afraid the best we can hope for is coming through the Play-Offs. Back in EFL2 he'd be almost my ideal manager. It's here and now and being in the National League that makes him the wrong fit for me. But I'm hoping I can be as wrong as I was last night for the rest of the season. RE: Stop-gap maybe? - Dancingwilldoit - 02-03-2022 Comparing last nights performance with Yeovil on Saturday is like comparing Chalk and Cheese. Last night we just blew them away with the best second half attacking performances I have seen at the B2Net/Proact/Technique stadium. We could easily have had 6 or 7. Notts weren't poor, we just didnt let them play. Their goal was class and Roach had no chance. We were pushing high up and a quick break aided by a handball did for us first half. Second half was just sublime. Couldn't believe how quick it seemed to go. Maguire gave his brother (who was at the game) a masterclass in defending and scoring. Not sure why but when we are down to the bear bones of a squad, we turn it on. Whittle was added to the injury list last night and we need some returnees before Southend on Saturday or else we cant fill the bench. Came out buzzing last night and its along time since I have felt like that. We just need to hold it together, not get any more long term injuries and we can still do it. RE: Stop-gap maybe? - spireitematt - 07-03-2022 I've thought are we just a stop gap till Cook gets a better offer but I think he will help the club get back into the Football League its just that he's come in at a time when everything seems to be happening at once with a lot of players out injured but also a poor pitch. I think if he get's the club promoted to L2 and I think the best chance now is probably playoffs unless Stockport really blow their lead then I think Cook will rebuild for L2 again. |
