The King - drewks - 19-01-2022

20 years since his untimely death.
I am lucky enough to remember him playing..... a REAL hero, a star of the day in every way, but - surprise, surprise - his obvious skills were only fully appreciated by those at our club.

R. I. P. Jeff.

I wouldn't say that. I'm not a Baggies fan but loved Jeff Astle. Especially when he scored that "offside" goal at Leeds.  Laugh

RE: The King - Stairs - 19-01-2022

I went as a kid and was behind the goal at the Brummie Road End.

I could see nothing really. But all I really remember was a huge cheers as Albion attacked.
Then two guys lifted me up and I saw the ball crossed from the right wing and Jeff Astle rising up and crashing in a header from about 5 yards.

A magic moment and a boyhood defining memory as I followed the Albion ever since.

I'd like to meet those two guys again and ask them why the ***K they did that! If it were not for those interfering "do gooder's" I might have gone the next week to see Leicester, Villa, Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea - anyone but West Brom play and it could have been so less taxing

I too saw him play for the Baggies in the early 70's when the Villa played WBA.

Remember blagging our way into the throstles club ( don't know if still exists?) before a charity / testimonial game , ? Asa Hartford?, where players from Villa, Blues, Wolves and Baggies were playing. Where we sat was right in front of a huge picture of Jeff scoring in the '68 Cup Final............until my wife spilt her Port and Lemon over the table and stripped the varnish.........we beat a hasty retreat.

A tragic loss to a dreadful disease........RIP Jeff.
