Jimmy Greaves - BaggieSteve - 19-09-2021

Sad news for me today with the death of Jimmy Greaves. I’m old enough to remember him playing for Spurs at the Hawthorns and scoring a magnificent goal in a 4-3 defeat to the Baggies. Along with Denis Law, he was the greatest natural goal scorer I’ve ever seen in the flesh. Just magnificent. Rest in Peace, Greavsie

Some would say the only passes he ever made on the pitch were to pass the ball into the net - and they probably wouldn't be wrong - but he passed a helluva lot more balls into the net than anyone else has got close to in this country.

Agree BaggieSteve, him and Dennis Law..... unbelievable!
Greavsie was just like a Rolls Royce, so smooth and easy. I've got this memory of him gliding past defenders with the ball apparently tied to his feet..... on pitches that were like ploughed fields.
Such a talented man.
Great character too.
RIP JG.

RIP Sir Jim
A real legend.
The best natural goal scorer I've seen.
Great pundit to boot.

RE: Jimmy Greaves - Salopbaggie - 20-09-2021

I only vaguely remember Jimmy Greaves as a player,  he left the Sham when I was about 10, around when his serious problems with alcohol were really becoming public.  I remember being told by my uncle (Yes, a real one, who used to take me to matches and totally whose fault it is that I have been subjected to living this life as a Baggie, where were protective services back then Big Grin ), "watch his feet".  Off the field, he struck me as that 'loveable cockney Jimmy', that guy that none of the adults want to come to the party, but all the kids did, because he was so much fun. He was to pundits back then as Des O'Conner was to Morecombe and Wise, the butt of the jokes, but in the most endearing loveable way possible, if memory serves he even had a slot on one of the shows called 'Ask Greavsie' (that could have been made up by my old hole riddled memory though). He carried this through when he became a pundit himself with some great attributed quotes such as “He hit the post, and after the game people will say, well, he hit the post”  and “The only thing Norwich didn’t get was the goal that they finally got”.  He also had that cheeky chappy quality who could tell a story which if anyone else was telling it would sound awful, but from him it sounded funny, like the one he used to tell about, I think it was Tommy Smith who at a warm up came over and  handed him a piece of paper, which was the evening menu for the Liverpool Royal Infirmary.  We should not forget how good he was, (I went back and checked) over an 8 year international career his goal to game ratio stood at a goal every 1.3 games, his domestic ratio was 1.5.  RIP Jimmy Greaves MBE

RE: Jimmy Greaves - silverbaggie - 21-09-2021

I saw Jimmy play just once at the time when he was still playing for Chelsea. I think that I'm right in saying it was his last away game for Chelsea before he went off to Italy.
Our defenders managed to keep him quiet that day apart from one moment of shear magic. He received the ball some 25 yards out with his back to goal. Before any of our players could react, he swivelled and hammered a shot which only just went over the bar with our keeper well beaten.
Somehow we ran out winners by 3-0 with two from 'The Tank' and the other by a certain guy who went back to Fulham, took Ipswich to the First Division championship and later Managed England.

R.I.P Jimmy may you long be remembered. Peace dove
