FA CUP FINAL COVERAGE - Devongone - 17-05-2021

Cup Final day used to be almost ridiculously big. It got wall-to-wall coverage from morning till you sat down for your tea with the stentorian tones of BBC News volume-controlled in the background.

Now it's desultory, a second-rate presentation of a competition completely overshadowed by former players' nostalgia.

No moment spoke more loudly than the post-match interview with Youri Tielemans. It was I think conducted by that daft girl who ruins the EFL for Final Score every other week, whose voice is that of a cat, strangulated by excitement at the long-delayed opening of a tin of Whiskas. Youri Tielemans is Belgian. He turns out to be as fluent in English as he is at shooting from outside the box. In possibly his third language he was forced to conjure interesting replies to the same question, tweaked only slightly with only minimal use of vocabulary, squawked at him five times by a broadcaster, whose future surely lies in a return to print media asap. He was brilliant. She was embarrassing. We found out How He Felt! He has a bright future in broadcasting when he can no longer shoot.

The game certainly gave pause for thought, when all we hear is about the array of talent available for England in the upchucking Euros, that by a country mile the best two players on view were Tielemans, who certainly wouldn't be rated Belgium's best and the superb Fofana who is struggling for a place in France's U-21 line-up.

The afternoon was topped off by Gary Lineker's assertion that Schmeichel is the best keeper in the Premier League. Yeah Gary and I'm a zebra. Comparing his save from Mason Mount with Jimmy Montgomery's famous effort, or Banks from Pele, will have National League keepers shaking their heads and thinking, "I'd have stopped that!" It was a really good save. FULL STOP.

Or maybe you loved it all?

Didnt watch it Dev. 3-00pm on a Saturday at the end of the season is when the FA Cup should be. Until it goes back there, they can forget it.
Glad Leicester won, against a so called super league team. Saw the last 5 or 10 mins and yes the interviews were crap. If she couldnt be heard over 15k or so Leicester fans, god knows how she would have gone on if 40k were there.

Cant remember the last entertaining Cup Final I have watched, its that good a competition

RE: FA CUP FINAL COVERAGE - Devongone - 17-05-2021

Leicester won despite never testing the dodgiest keeper in the competition outside the first two qualifying rounds ..... until Tielemans rifled the ball into the top corner. Chelsea deployed one of their most potent attacking threats to stop Jamie Vardy who has scored twice in sixteen games is it, and persisted throughout with through balls to their own centre forward who can out-speed anyone and find a way to miss the goal from any range. It was a bizarre game.

I'm not against women's involvement in football punditry. Alex Scott is as good as she was as a player, ideal to team up with Jermaine Jenas, both of them good to look at and listen to. Gabby Logan can present any sport for me. Karen Carney needs a vocal coach, like many of the men, but she knows the game too. But THAT must rank as the worst sports interview I've ever seen. The crowd noise actually slightly saved her; it covered a little of her embarrassment. And Youri was indeed great. I wonder if the Belgians would allow him to comment on a few of the games during the Euros?

I don't particularly care what time the kick off is so long as it raises the profile of both the game and the competition. So we feel excited, like I used to, so we care even when the match turns out to be a dour slog.

By the way, to show my age, all the ads kept saying ZERO FILLER, what is that, a dentistry term? AS it turned out the game was a poor substitute for a Paddington Bear film.

I watched the FA Cup final. I'm a bit of a traditionalist and think that the game should be 3pm kick off instead of 17:15. I thought the 1st half was rather poor but the 2nd half it came alive. You could see how much it meant to Leicester and the fans to win it.

I'm going to disagree with you Dev about Karen Carney. I like her as a pundit and a commentator, she knows what she's talking about, she played at the highest level in the Women's game and represented the National team. I think a lot of people dislike her because she has a regional accent and doesn't talk in RP. What's wrong with listening to an accent or dialect? None in my book, it makes a change from listening to the same boring, monotone BBC voices you hear. By the way the interviewer who interviewed Tielemans wasn't Karen Carney, I know her face but can't remember her name she sometimes does the EFL on Final score when Clem isn't there.

I think the last entertaining cup final Dancing was probably Arsenal and Hull where Arsenal went 2-0 down early on but won the game 3-2.

RE: FA CUP FINAL COVERAGE - Devongone - 18-05-2021

Matt I wrote in PRAISE of Karen Carney. I KNOW she didn't do the interview, I'm 99% sure it was the daft girl from Final Score who has to write everything down or she loses her thread. What's wrong with her is she is no good at her job. She either needs training, or ditching.

Karen Carney needs a vocal coach not to lose her regional accent, but to add some rise and fall to what she's saying. She's too flat and that can make her sound bored with her own often insightful comments. Regional accents are fine - though interviews with Irish jockeys sometimes could be conducted in Gaelic for all I understand.

The last question interviewers are ever encouraged to ask is how did it feel ........... and on Saturday she managed it 5 questions out of 5, which revealed no insight or planning on her behalf, and which differed from each other only minimally. Despite this Youri managed to say five different things fluently in a foreign language.

It was a poor game which Chelsea lost and in which Youri Tielemans and Wesley Fofana covered a number of below-par performances from their own team to haul Leicseter to victory. Leicester has always been my second team to Jesterfield, but Soyuncu, Maddison, Vardy, Iheanacho, Allbrighton, and even Castagne and Ndidi were well short of their best. That happens in finals. Sometimes you win because mostly the other team loses. And I couldn't name a Chelsea player who did himself justice on Saturday.

HER NAME IS KELLY SOMERS and she is the nit on Final Score, who pretends to know about the EFL.

And to answer my earlier question -
Zero filling is a type of low-level format, where the entire storage device is erased by writing zeroes to every bit of the storage device. It is often used to thoroughly and securely erase all data, to make it impossible for data to be recovered later. Zero filling is a way to protect personal data from being stolen.

Did I need to know this? Should it have attracted me? Was I the only one baffled?

RE: FA CUP FINAL COVERAGE - spireitematt - 19-05-2021

Fair enough Dev, I misinterpreted what you were saying. I don't think the Leicester players and Brendan Rodgers were interested in the interviews as they were more interested in celebrating winning the cup.

RE: FA CUP FINAL COVERAGE - Devongone - 21-05-2021

I could say some interesting and funny things on TV given the chance, but I think I'd benefit from a vocal coach. Karen Carney is a bit too flat and monotone and occasionally swallows the end of a sentence. It irritates me a bit because I'm interested in what she has to say. Part of that has something to do with her regional accent, but she needs to keep her identity, just consider the listener a bit more, that's all. This is the type of thing you become conscious of if you spend nearly 30 years of your life with an actor/director I'm afraid.

And I reckon you're wrong about Leicester's players and Brendan Rodgers. Tielemans gave an excellent and considered interview despite not being asked a sensible question and Brendan Rodgers is so far up his own bottom, he always makes sure he interviews to a higher level than his limited managerial capabilities (wooooooooo narsty!)
