Terries v Cherries - jjamez - 12-04-2021

After Tuesdays debacle at Norwich, Town followed that display with another of an abject nature in a lucky 0-0 draw at home to Rotherham. In a performance which saw Town rarely trouble the Millers goalkeeper, Leigh Bromby's granddad Richard Keogh came closest when he struck a well timed effort into the midriff of the keeper. Otherwise I can seldom remember a shot from a Town player, I can remember some brain fades in the final third where the players pick the wrong option, but shots not really. Most at threat was the Town goal, with Lewis Wing causing trouble from set pieces, hitting the crossbar on one occasion from a free kick and hitting a rasping effort that needed Schofield to push well away from goal. Ex Town player Matt Crooks hit the post in the first half when he had most the goal to aim at, and the Millers squandered another handful of chances, whilst Town had Keogh and Schofield to thank for keeping it goalless too.

I would say Town have another chance to put things right on Tuesday in a 17:30 kick off against Bournemouth, but lets be fair, we've been saying this a lot, especially since Christmas and quite frankly, it just never seems to be anywhere near to occurring, the performances since the turn of the year have been poor to say the least, with equally poor recruitment and it never seems like changing. With season cards starting to go on sale tomorrow (monday) the club will be no doubt hoping for an improvement, otherwise the club will find it easier to sell dog muck than cards.

Not going to say that I am full of confidence going into this one, but I would hope that it will be a better performance than when the two sides last met and our last Tuesday outing, a shocking performance/scoreline and it could see Phil donning the executioners mask, however, Dean owns the Axe wielded to remove the likes of Lee Clark and Simon Grayson and Phil hasn't the money to even rent it, borrowing is out of the question. Carlos' request of a quick execution is out of the window as he will be hacked away by a KFC Spork (other sporks are available) it could be argued that the execution started in February, just Phil hasn't made much progress or I've been watching too much Game of Thrones...or both.

But anyway, Tuesday, we welcome Bournemouth up from the South coast, in a game that was rearranged due to the Cherries progression in the FA Cup. The Cherries sit 6th in the table on 68 points and automatic promotion is out of the question, not mathematically yet, but very highly improbable, they will be focussing on the play offs. They are 3 points behind Barnsley, but have a far superior goal difference, and are 2 points ahead of Reading, but still have a superior goal difference, a win on Tuesday will send them 5th and put them 5 points clear of 7th.

After suffering a bit of a slump in February and early March, the Cherries have come into some form, having not dropped a point since the 13th of March when they lost at home to Barnsley, their only defeat since then came in the FA Cup against Southampton. They've had a 3-0 win at home to fellow play off hopefuls Swansea, Phil Billing opening the scoring with an own goal and Arnaut Danjuma being the other 2 scorers. Another 3 goals came at home, this time against Middlesbrough in a 3-1 win, someone called Billing opened the scoring once again, with Jefferson Lerma and Dominic Solanke scoring the other 2, Duncan Watmore scored Boro's goal. They followed that up with a 2-0 win away at Blackburn, Billing scored for the 3rd consecutive game, with Danjuma scoring in the second half, Adam Armstrong missed a penalty late on for Rovers but it wouldn't have made much difference.

Last time out they played on of Towns relegation rivals in the form of Coventry City and ran out 4-1 winners. Danjuma opened the scoring after just 23 seconds and Coventry hit back minutes later through Matty James. Danjuma scored his second of the game after 28 minutes when Billing set him up, before David Brooks and Solanke scored in the second half to secure the points. You may notice that Billing has been heavily involved of late primarily due to ex Leeds Defender and failed Middlesbrough boss Jonathan Woodgate moving him up into the number 10 position, a role he played on a handful of occasions in the promotion campaign under Wagner. To be fair I preferred seeing him in that role rather than having to move Aaron Mooy there as it allowed our key player to be in his favoured place, plus it gave Billing more chance to get shots away, adding to that his physical presence there would cause issues for the opponents and I am a bit surprised he didn't get utilised there more and that it has taken this long for someone to give it an extended go.

His recent run of goals has moved him 4th in their scoring charts on 6 goals, comfortably behind Junior Stanislas on 11 and Solanke and Danjuma on 13. Danjuma leads the way in the creative charts with 7 assists, whilst Solanke, Brooks and full back Adam Smith are joint 2nd on 6. Towns leading scorer is still Fraizer Campbell on 7, with Koroma who hasn't played since December in second on 6. Isaac Mbenza leads the assists chart on 7 and has found himself on the bench against Brentford and Rotherham, but started in the humiliation at Carrow Road. It would seem plausible that he will return to the starting line up on Tuesday to possibly lead the line with Campbell.

It was a relatively quiet winter window for the Cherries in regards to incomings with injury prone ex Arsenal wonderkid Jack Wilshere joining on a free transfer having being training with the club for a spell to keep his fitness up. Wilshere spent the 2016-17 campaign on loan at the club and made 27 appearances, he has made a further 11 in the red and black stripes this campaign. Former Barnsley loanee Ben Pearson joined for an undisclosed fee from Preston, the former Manchester United trainee was out of contract at the end of the campaign and made the move to the south coast where he has made 10 appearances for the club. The final incoming was that of experienced striker Shane Long from south coast rivals Southampton. The Irish international made the loan move due to limited game time, having made 10 appearances for the Saints this campaign, without finding the net, in fact he had only scored 12 league goals for the club since the 16/17 in 124 games. He has featured 9 times for the Cherries and has scored 2 goals.

In terms of leaving the club, Nnamdi Ofoborh joined Wycombe on loan, whilst Jack Simpson moved to Scotland to Steven Gerrards Rangers, Dan Gosling left to add competition to Watfords midfield whilst electric striker Josh King finally left the club to join Everton on a undisclosed deal. Getting his hefty wages off the book as well as Goslings with their contracts ending at the end of the season coupled with the departure of Nathan Ake in the summer for 40million proves to be good business conducted by a relegated Premiership side. Unlike some closer to home.

The head to heads between the two clubs sits in the favour of Town, but only just, with Town winning 19, Bournemouth winning 17 and 18 being drawn, including the tense play off games back in 2011 when both sides were fighting for promotion to the Championship. The two sides would draw the first leg 1-1 at the then Fitness First Stadium. Loanee Kevin Kilbane opened the scoring for Town, before future Town signing Donal Mcdermott equalised in the second half.  The second leg was even more nerve jangling, if I remember it was played on a Friday night and I made it home from playing football just in time for kick off. Prolific goal scorer Lee Peltier opened the scoring for Town, before Steve Lovell equalised from the penalty spot just before half time, only Danny Ward decided to score even closer to half time on the 45th minute to take the sides in 2-1 at the break. Lovell doubled his tally in the second half to send the two sides into extra time, where Danny Ings would give the Cherries a 3-2 lead in the 104th minute, only for Anthony Kay to equalise a minute later, Cherries defender Jason Pearce would see red in the 112th minute as the sides headed to penalties. Michael Symes would score the opening penalty for Bournemouth, with sub Lee Novak netting Towns first, Ian Bennett saved Liam Feeneys spot kick whilst Ward scored for Town. Future Town midfielder Anton Robinson took Bournemouths 3rd kick but missed, with the experienced Kilbane not suffering the same fate, Shaun Cooper scored Bournemouths 4th kick but it mattered not as Kay fired Town into the play off final to face Peterborough at Old Trafford, and we know how that went.

A few years later the two sides would meet again, this time in the Championship, where a Mark Robins lead Town would face up against Eddie Howe. Adam Hammill gave Town the lead with a prodded finish before James Vaughan doubled the lead with a header from Hammills cross. Vaughan would grab his second of the game just before half time after being slotted through by Oliver Norwood. Jake Carroll would get fouled in the second half to give Vaughan the chance to get a hattrick, which he did, much to the disdain of the corner flags. Marc Pugh pulled one back for Bournemouth before Adam Clayton scored Towns 5th goal late on. Bournemouth would get retribution later in the season with a 2-1 win, before the opening game of the next season saw them beat Town 4-0, which lead to Robins walking out on the club. Bournemouth would get promoted that campaign.

Bournemouth would be in the Premier League a couple of seasons before Town joined them. In the first meeting of that campaign Bournemouth would run out 4-0 winners, Callum Wilson bagging a hattrick as Town endured a heavy defeat. In the reverse fixture at the John Smiths Stadium Town would get off to a flyer when diminutive midfielder Alex Pritchard scored his first Town goal. He has since retired from football and allowed his brother Dave to take his place. Junior Stanislas would equalise soon after before Town started to take control of the game, Steve Mounie scored Towns second and tried to claim the 3rd, but it was later awarded as a Steve Cook own goal. Rajiv Van La Parra completed the scoring from the penalty spot in injury time to give Town a valuable 4-1 win.

In regards to team news, Town will likely assess Pipa once again, the right back went off again on Saturday after feeling his groin, an issue he had before the international break, yet was still fit enough to feature for the Spanish under 21's. Rolando Aarons made a comeback to the bench at the weekend but didn't get on the pitch, he will have had a few more days training and may be able to feature more. Josh Koroma and Harry Toffolo have both returned to training after lengthy spells, especially in the case of Koroma, so it remains to be seen if they are ready for any sort of action come Tuesday. Alex Vallejo is expected to return to the set up after missing the last two games through a knock to the head/ concussion picked up against Brentford. Schindler and Niasse remain long term absentees, whilst Pritchard, who knows, I have a sly feeling there may be an obligation to extend his contract if he plays a certain amount of games in his final year and that's why he has vanished again. I may be completely wrong though, but it happened to Rob Green when he was at QPR.

As for Bournemouth, it would appear that they will be at full strength with no new injuries or suspensions. Welsh defender Chris Mepham will be looking to reclaim a spot in the starting 11, putting pressure on Tottingham loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers, whilst Sam Surridge and Ben Pearson will be staking claims for a starting berth.

Neither manager has spoken yet, but I honestly don't think we are going to be missing much there. Most likely get the same babble from Carlos as usual, about needing to perform to our levels yaddah yaddah.

Who am I?

It's just the played for both quiz, I'm hoping its more difficult than usual.

1) A striker born in Leyton, England, I stand at 6 foot tall and have played for 12 clubs in my career, I've played for some of those in multiple spells. I was tipped to be the next big English talent, but injuries and loss of form ruined that. I switched my national allegiance in 2017 and have made 5 international appearances.

2) A defender by trade, I began my career at one of the current top 4, but made the vast majority of my appearances for Coventry in the mid to late 00's. I had two spells at Nottingham Forest on loan as well as playing for the likes of Norwich. I came to Town after falling out of favour at Bournemouth. Recently I have been drifting down the footballing pyramid but I am still playing.

3) Another defender, I have played the majority of my career on the south coast and I have had the honour of being the captain at Bournemouth. I made my debut in a side that contained my brother, he would be released and drift into the lower leagues, I, however made it to the Premier League. I own race horses due to my fathers interest in them and scored my first professional goal against Huddersfield Town. My most recent clubs have been in the north of England, one of whom is Huddersfield.

4) I am a winger who initially had a loan spell at Bournemouth, I impressed there and was signed up by Huddersfield via tribunal. I scored one goal for the club in the Football League Trophy, but I struggled to make any sort of impact. Bournemouth signed me on an undisclosed deal and I struggled to make the same impact there. I ultimately left and moved to Ireland before being given another opportunity in the north of England, it never quite worked out there either and I have struggled for a club since.

5) Another defender, I always seem to have a good game against Huddersfield, even when I was wearing their kit. I had a loan spell at Bournemouth early in my career and scored against Town for them. My loan deal there became full time but only lasted the year as I struggled with injuries and moved to Millwall. I would impress in the Championship for a number of seasons, chipping in with goals here and there, including another one against Town, before I would end up making the move north to Huddersfield. I ended up leaving fairly quickly back to the Championship, but I struggled for consistency. I have however, bagged a couple of good goals and another one against Town.

6) I retired early due to injuries and have since moved into scouting. My time at Huddersfield lasted 3 years, but with very few appearances over that time, including some time out on loan. I scored one goal for the club during my time. I got injured on my debut when I was looking decent and went backwards after that. My time at Bournemouth was more successful as I achieved promotion with them, playing an active role in it and easily made the step up with them. I also represented England, albeit the C team.

7) I am a journeyman winger that has bounced from pillar to post for a while now. I made my appearances for Bournemouth on loan early in my career and would have a loan spell at the likes of Halifax and Hereford before I signed for Huddersfield. I didn't have a great time at Huddersfield and ended up leaving on loan before being allowed to leave for Shrewsbury. The longest spell I've had at a club since leaving Town was a 4 year spell at Motherwell. Since then I've had a short spell on the south coast before going into the non-league.

Nice one, jjamez. Carlos is speaking now. Says the only doubt is Vallejo. Pipa will play through the pain.

No 4. The legend Donal McDermott

RE: Terries v Cherries - theo_luddite - 12-04-2021

Cracking thread jjamez

but ...... Terries?

Chocolate Orange segments v Chocolate dipped/coated Cherries? Still got an Easter egg hang-over jjamez? Big Grin
Both are belting with a glass of fizz either way. Thumb up

Let the first man (or AmChaff) that has never had a spell checker screw up his post cast the first chocolate orange segment.

From an assortment of translations of Careless's presser.
"Rolando Aarons, Carel Eiting and Josh Koroma could make their respective returns to the pitch during Huddersfield Town’s game against AFC Bournemouth on Tuesday."
Wow, I'll believe that when I see them smashing in the goals.

Then again - "Josh and Carel have both done full training today but right now they cannot be first XI players. They are a long time without playing, both of them."
Seems a bit more realistic.

Antigrams

1 - Boscombe - it's a bit further sarf than Morecambe, but the Christmas lights are just as exciting
3 - Steve Fletcher

As mentioned elsewhere - Season Card renewed. It's the same price wherever we are and I spend more in two weeks at ASDA and Morrisons combined for no entertainment value what so ever, unless I invite friends round for a BBQ.

RE: Terries v Cherries - jjamez - 12-04-2021

Believe it or not the it was intentional. It was that or cherriers, but seeing as we always yield and whimper I thought we should lose a letter

RE: Terries v Cherries - Lord Snooty - 12-04-2021

Why, when everybody is now back at work, is this game kicking off at 17:30? So Bournemouth don't have to get home so late in the morning?
Shite to that. I'm working til 5, won't get home til 5.20. This is not right, Town. Angry

RE: Terries v Cherries - theo_luddite - 12-04-2021

They'll be flying in and out of L666s/Bradford or Manchester anyway so not like they will be sat on a bus for 8 hours is it?

RE: Terries v Cherries - SHEP_HTAFC - 13-04-2021

Great thread jjamez Thumb up
Not looking forward to this game at all. It's just no fun in the build up to games anymore....dreaming of us playing well and scoring great goals.
We all know what is likely to happen. Drab, uninspiring and another loss.

No 5. Could that be Jamie Vincent?

RE: Terries v Cherries - WakeyTerrier - 13-04-2021

Its going to be another tough one, I think 0-3 Bournemouth

RE: Terries v Cherries - jjamez - 13-04-2021

Nope shep, not Jamie vincent

RE: Terries v Cherries - theo_luddite - 13-04-2021

Aarons has made the bench
Rowe and Mbenza in for Pipa and Sonogo

Otherwise this definitely isn't the yoof team this time around.
