RE: Wow ! - Devongone - 20-08-2017

I've boringly told you before how I played in goal for a Saturday team that thought I was the bees knees, but I simultaneously was in a Sunday team that had spent several seasons chasing me to play for them, but when I did hadn't an ounce of confidence in me. I was a mainspring of the Saturday side doing well and couldn't stop being an absolutely drawback to a potentially excellent Sunday team. Saturdays I played with a centre back I could read, who I gave confidence and who returned it. Sunday I had no idea what my centre back was doing, he blamed me for his own errors and I hated every moment. Goalkeepers can make or break a team. Tommy does that for us. And as to fitness I can only remember two occasions in my life where I did as much in goal as modern pro' keepers are forced into WARMING UP. (AND in one of those I let 11 as a 17 year old and the ref' came in at the end to congratulate me and tell me,"None of em were your fault, and it would have 30 without you son!") Tommy's fit to play, praise be.

Great that Sinnott did well. Every team needs an attacking midfielder who poses a goal threat.

Thing that makes me truly fearful is all our manager can think to do with a bench of decent subs is to use them to waste time from the 88th minute onwards. Pathetic! Rabbit in the headlights! Why are football managers so shite? How come rugby uses subs to positive ends and has even changed the whole game with them, whilst football managers have barely a thought in their head beyond the original eleven? The other week I went through all the EFL games and only found two where there might just have been some pre-planned, positive uses of substitutions.

My other worry is that our current back three can't ever work. If/when they are in trouble the wingbacks are forced back to help out. Once the wingbacks are forced back, midfield starts to be over-run ........ so either the forwards don't see enough of the ball or they come back to help midfield. The back three have to be self-sufficient enough to free the wing backs to make a positive contribution.
