Stewart Evans; The end of an era.
Generations of Albion fans had been inspired by a succession of wonderful goalscorers. Ronnie Allen, Derek Kevan, Astle, Brown and Regis… looking back we had been spoilt over the years.
Then in the mid-80s something changed. I remember watching Stewart Evans in horror and with an impending sense of doom. This was a tall, gangly man made of spare deck chair parts. Think Peter Crouch with a perm. And a lot less footballing ability. After just 90 minutes watching our new striker I realized we were really in the shite, perhaps for many years to come.
In fairness, Goodman, Super-Bob and Hughes came along to ease the pain and Stewart Evens may well have been an effective target man for his previous club (Wimbledon) but I repeat… Ronnie Allen, Derek Kevan, Astle, Brown and Regis, ALL England internationals at some point. Seeing Stewart Evans at that time in an Albion shirt was a shock to the system and a sign of dark days to come.
Sorry, I had to get that off my chest.

Ian Edwards, Welsh international striker who we bought from Rhyl and who went on to score three goals in sixteen appearances (one against Sheffield Wednesday, one against Notts County and one against Bristol Rovers) during our spell in the Second Division in the mid-Seventies. Moved on to Chester, then Wrexham, Palace, Mold Alexandra and Porthmadog.

How's about Jimmy Edwards?
NO NO not the comic actor but a player bought from Stourbridge who joined the Baggies in 1926 and left in 1937 to Norwich.
He played 202 games in all and scored 9 goals but then he was after all a full back and defenders rarely crossed the half way line in those days.
then there was an:- MWR Ebanks who was with us for only 3 years 1981/84 and played just 6 games for us before joining Port Vale.

Some pretty obscure ones for E. Lest we forget!
He's not very obscure at all, but Nathan 'Duke' Ellington was a right let-down. He had a good reputation and scoring record with his previous Club (can't remember who), but failed to impress upfront with Kanu(?)
Mind you, he'd struggle to make single figures in the current team!

I missed the mention of Donovan last week. Definitely not a nobody; hugely popular player at Albion in the Nineties, lives in Yorkshire again now but still makes it to at least one game a season at the Hawthorns and brings his sons with him, they sit in the East Stand. Always time for a chat, top bloke all round.
