At the same time, he couldn't resist slotting Dawson back in at right back, for the extra impetus from attacking set plays with Dawson + 2 centre backs.

Rightly or wrongly, attacking set plays is a massive part of Pulis' selections. IMO this was why Dawson was moved back to right back rather than keeping the same 4 as last week but swapping Evans in for Hegazi.

It will be interesting to see if Hegazi plays next week, as he made another error yesterday and was close to making a second - but without him, we only really have Dawson who can attack corners and free kicks.

Either way, Gibbs will start next week. It'll just be interesting to see how the other 3 line up.

It will also be interesting to see what happens in the midfield. Krychowiak and Barry have both come to play football, or they could've stayed where they were. At the same time, Pulis paid decent money for Livermore, but it's clear they can't all feature together. I guess Livermore will be dropped, but we'll see, he appears to be one of Pulis' favourites at the moment.

Good summary on the selection and the reasons why, pretty much spot on to be fair.

Personally think Pulis is going to have to rotate in order to keep the squad happy.

What he thought would happen playing the 3 is beyond me but I'm happy he did because we've seen early that it won't win games!

I'd be tempted to use Barry and Krychowiak as part of a 4-4-2 with Hal and JRod up top. Seems Rondon is back in favour though.

We could've done with Brunty in the starting 11 yesterday, stick him left or right wing just for his delivery and protection of the full back.

Gibbs has to play and Nyom would be my choice at RB, I know Hegazi hasn't done much wrong but Daws has come on leaps and bounds and deserves to start at CB.

Well come on - did we REALLY think the good ol Baggies would follow form and predictions by winning this one??

RE: Brighton vs WBA - Match Thread - talkSAFT - 10-09-2017

I've just recovered from this time yesterday, but my wife's black eye looks quite painful!

I couldn't see much of the game because the Links kept stopping and all I got was a bit of commentary, but with your comments and newspaper reports it must have been a very sad, angry journey back for the faithful. I turned the commentary off altogether at 1/2 time.
I assumed that the Mangement's team talk must have included how we need to find some fluency between our 8 defenders winning the ball and then passing and movement to the attackers, but (1st half) I never heard Phillips mentioned at all, and wondered whether he'd been sent off in the 1st minute. All I could see - before the Links failed - was total lack of fluency moving forward. I could understand it if we were facing Man City, but this (along with Stoke 2 weeks ago) was a must-win-match - not a chance for a cheeky point.
Assuming BHA are one of our relegation rivals, this was a 6-pointer, from which we got f*ck all. This means we've got to not just target, but gain, away draws at ManU, City, Chelsea, Arse, Spurs, and Liverpool just to keep on equal par with Brighton.

But Brighton have got some quality players, they work really aaaard............

Wink

Probably like most of us on this site, I can't stand Mark Hughes; he's a moaning, whingeing bloke who never admits that he or his team were beaten by a better side. It's always someone else's fault.

However, I've just watched Stoke play Manure, top of the table and the form team of the moment who have been scoring for fun and conceding bugger all. Hughes set up his Stoke team with pace, midfield creativity, a clear willingness to attack, a desire to win and a centre forward who happens to know how to score. It was a really good 2-2 draw that did not flatter Stoke at all. Contrast that with events in Brighton today. We play a team who haven't scored ever and, whilst undoubtedly enthusiastic, will be a wee bit low on confidence. So, do we decide to take the Mark Hughes approach, select a team to create and win? Do we heck! We pick a team that is, frankly, boring and defensive. We get what we deserve. Right now- and it pains me to say this - the Stoke fans are right in taking the p*ss out of us and our manager. As much as I dislike him, I'd rather have Hughes managing the Albion than I would Pulis right now.

NOOOO! Things can NEVER be that bad! Shame on you BS!

Smile Well, to modify my comments slightly, I'd rather have his approach to football than Pulis'. I'm with everyone else in seeng him as a moaning, whingeing, complaining git.

I'm sure the comments on here about not panicking are rightly justified and that we had players who, individually, did not perform on the day. Neither am I, despite what some may think, wanting Pulis to be sacked. However, I do think that, poor individual performances nothwithstanding, his team selection was rank. To approach a game against Brighton with that defensive mentality from the outset was, I believe, inexcusable, particularly with the players recruited during the summer.

It will be interesting to see his starting XI for WHU. I hope and pray that he does not start all of Barry, Livermore and Greg. I would honestly leave out Livermore, I'd drop Rondon, play Rodriguez up front and a midfield five of Barry, Greg, Phillips, Morrison and Chadli (remember him!). If not Chadli, then play Burke from the start - him and Phillips would provide some serious pace and you could play Morrison just behind JRod. Might fail dismally but I'm sure it would create chances and would at least test their defence.

RE: Brighton vs WBA - Match Thread - GlassEyedBomber - 11-09-2017

The worrying thing for me is that if that's our "defensive" approach then we should consider giving Man City a walk over result instead to help our goal difference.

RE: Brighton vs WBA - Match Thread - Salopbaggie - 11-09-2017

Still would like to have a look at a back 3 with two wing backs Nyom and Gibbs hopefully Gibbs on the left and Nyom on the right Smile then Barry and Krychowiak in the centre with Burke, Philips on the wings and any of our strikers up front as any striker without service cant be expected to do that much.

RE: Brighton vs WBA - Match Thread - wba1978 - 12-09-2017

This is what I would like to see...

--------------------------------Foster------------------------------------
------------Dawson-----------Evans---------------Hegazi-------------
Nyom-------------------------Barry-------------------------------Gibbs
----------------Krychowiak-------------Mozza--------------------------
--------------------------------Chadli-------------------------------------
--------------------------------J-Rod-------------------------------------

Philips and McClean/Brunt interchangeable with Nyom and Gibbs
depending on how attacking a formation.
Realise we probably wont see Chadli again soon,
so perhaps fit Burke somewhere in there instead?
Or even Philips at #10?
Smile
