David Wagner's league record at Schalke was 36 matches, 9 wins, 12 draws, 15 defeats, 39 goals scored, 69 goals conceded, 39 points and 1.08 points per game. That is looked at as being poor yet it is better than Allardyce's record with us last season, of course over a longer period.

The tale of Wagner's time at Schalke is quite simple to follow and is a tale of 2 stories. They started the season very strongly and only lost 3 matches in the first half of the season, including a win against Leipzig and draw with Dortmund, and went into Xmas in 6th place chasing down European qualification. They started the second half of the season with a 2-0 win against Monchengladbach. They then lost 5-0 to Bayern and that was beginning of his downfall. 10 of the next 16 were defeats and 7 were hammerings of 3 or more goals.

Schalke should have replaced him last summer but they stuck with him and then sacked him after 2 matches of the new season anyway. The fact that Schalke then went through 4 more Head Coaches last season shows the mess that that club was in and that can't be solely lumped at Wagner's door. In the same way that our relegation can't be lumped solely at the door of Allardyce. His mistakes at Schalke, such as not persisting with a consistent system (started with 4-2-3-1 but then starting experimenting with 442 diamond, 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 3-3-3-1, 3-4-1-2 and 3-4-3) and the very poor defence in the 2nd half of the season should be looked at and thoroughly scrutinised.

We also should not ignore the absolute mess that Schalke have been in since 2014. No consistency, going through a new coach every season, no identity, poor financials and selling their star players. In the summer of 2019 Schalke had 16 arrivals and 13 departures. Last summer was 19 arrivals and 24 departures. You can't tell me that that doesn't damage a team, its players and any cohesiveness.

If it is him then I'll be fine with appointment. I think he needs more time away from the game but I'll happier with him than some of the other main contenders.

With Roy being offered the job at 16/1, leap frogging all the others, shows how wrong the bookies can be after all that faffing about Wilder, and now Wagner comes in from nowhere.
Roy will be proud, not sure about Wilder if he gets the job being thought of as 2nd best to a man of 74 Wink

RE: New manager - Salopbaggie - 09-06-2021

Joe Massi reporting the Board wanted Wilder, Wilder was keen on the job, but "Guochuan Lai vetoed a move for Wilder" because of his public criticism of owner Prince Abdullah bin Musa'ad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

RE: New manager - Baggiebob(BBB) - 09-06-2021

To remember that name is bad enough, but to have two bin's in it, you can see why he was dumped, as should Lai bin!! Tongue

RE: New manager - Stairs - 09-06-2021

So our chairman, who is totally disinterested in the club and wants to sell it, has ruled out Appleton and Wilder because he does not want to pay out money (no surprises) on Appleton and he does not like how Wilder spoke to the owners at Sheff Utd.

So rather than pick Wilder who would add value to the club he has forced us to go against the boards unanimous choice and take a ‘lesser’ option.

Personally, Wagner could be a great pick. But it is clearly a risk. I’ll be 100% behind him of course but hard not to feel Wilder was a better fit.

Just seen this elsewhere - Don't know how true though?:

Masi just now on twitter:
"Hearing from multiple sources David Wagner will not be the next Albion boss. Chasing more details now..."

RE: New manager - WakeyTerrier - 10-06-2021

I think Wagner still gets a lot of respect in England for the job he did in taking Town to the Premier League and keeping us there. He would use the phrase "underdog" and "no limits" and to be fair to him it worked for 18months.
The problem he has now is that he is no longer the unknown quantity, people know how his teams play. He will get the players fit, you will be fairly solid in the Championship and with the right players he will try to play football in the correct manner but he needs players capable of playing his style and that probably means a busy period in the transfer market this summer

Wagner is off to take charge at BSC Young Boys in Switzerland, I would have thought we would have been a better bet, but Terresa the Tea Lady start brushing up on your tactics.

RE: New manager - WBA-Josh - 10-06-2021

BSC Young Boys are Swiss champions, will be in the Champions League next season, is closer to Germany than West Bromwich and Bern is a lovely city so if it is true then I don't blame him.
