RE: 2024 (Shilen Patel) Summer Transfer Window Thread - Slick_Footwork - 23-05-2024

From a nostalgic point of view, it's sad to see Matty Phillips go. Been a good player over the years, particularly in his first few years in the Premier League. The right decision from a footballing point of view.

The thing which surprised me is seeing how many games some of the others players like Reach and Chalobah have played. I realise Reach was a favourite of Bruce, but it never felt like he strung more than a couple of starts together. The fact he played 78 times, as bit part player, shows how big of a squad rebuild we need.

As for the trio we have offered deals to, I'd be very surprised if we're able to retain them all, if any.

The one I'd most like to keep is Kipre, who has been integral in Corberan's philosophy of playing out from the back. I don't think he's Premier League standard defensively, but it wouldn't surprise me if Prem sides come in for him as a squad player. Or even Championship sides with more money.

Bartley it probably depends on the length of contract offered. It also wouldn't surprise me if someone like Luton came in for him. So touch and go.

Mowatt is probably the most likely to stay, mostly because I don't expect as much interest in him. He's a decent player at this level so worth retaining, but at the same time he doesn't excel either defensively or offensively and his main attribute is just being neat. I'd really like to see us introduce someone who offers more going forward in the middle of the park, but would still like to keep him as a squad player.

As for the Grady link, I might be wrong but suspect it's a made up rumour. The fee seems over the odds, the link to West Ham seems unlikely as they've only just announced Lopetegui and finally, I just don't think he's done enough to show he's good enough to return to the Premier League. Don't get me wrong, he's a great lad who is excellent on his day, but he's also looked quite slow and ponderous at times. Sadly those ponderous performances have been more frequent.

Next season's 11 with what we have...

Palmer

Furlong
Ajayi
Taylor
Towsend

Wallace
Yokuslu
Molumby
Grady
Fellows

Maja

With Griffiths, Ashworth, Swift, Dike, Thomas-Asante and Grant in the backburner.

Actually doesn't look that bad going forwards with a strong backup despite the releases. But we would need multiple additions in the defensive and midfield areas.

Not too many surprises I wouldn’t think; offering Bartley a new contract is, I feel, sensible if we’re unsure about Kipre’s intentions, although I’m hoping both he and Mowatt will re-sign. Obviously the loan players have to go back but I wonder if we might try to sign Johnson, particularly if the speculation about Diangana returning to West Ham is true, as it would provide the necessary funds. Not sure how I feel about Grady leaving, if it was to happen; I know there has been general disappointment with his performances but I’ve always liked him and always thought he offered us something a bit different.

Yeah Steve - Grady is a strange one isn't he.
With the obvious talent that he has, he can very often disappoint, but he's always likely to spark something.
I don't know..... I DO like the 'unpredictable' like him, but maybe he's just not produced enough consistently...?
Difficult one!

You’re probably right, Drewks; he has been inconsistent but if anyone can get him playing - and I think this past season we’ve seen more of the “old” Grady - it’s Corberan. However, given a choice between him and Johnston (I appreciate that’s hypothetical), I'd take Johnston

Yeah.
Going on to your last point about Johnston, it seems to me that he had a 'fire in his belly', a point to prove, etc etc.... and that's why we maybe saw the player we did.
It begs the question - why don't ALL professional players have that desire to be the best they can be, in every game?!!
I think we all know the answer, unfortunately - big egos, big wage packet no matter what, no club loyalty, etc etc. Only the odd manager (oooo sorry, Head Coach) like Klop seems to be able to motivate most players in every game.
Shocking!!

" why don't ALL professional players have that desire to be the best they can be, in every game?!!"

Very good point, Drewks, and it's all psychology. When I played bog-standard Sat/Sunday football I couldn't understand why some games (esp after a night on the booze!) I just couldn't be arsed, and drifted through the game. I just needed a kick up the arse tbh!...and when our Manager did give me one at half-time, I really picked myself up. And sometimes I'd pick myself up if there was someone I knew watching, who I wanted to 'impress'.
It's mainly psychology. How far a really good Coach can lift a player's mind is very important.

Lazio looking at Grady. I think his choice would be back in the London area. But money talks.

I see the Carlos Corberan rumours have started already with Leicester City apparently wanting him should Enzo Maresca get the Chelski job.

Darnell Furlong could be sold (surely more than £2m) to increase funds for squad rebuild!

Must be more to this otherwise our new owners pockets are not very deep (or FFP is restricting bringing players in despite 'unlimited funds'.)

Saw this and hope it is nonsense, as how are you going to replace him with better for under £2 million and currently we have no one else to play in that position.

Uh-oh..... Chelsea have appointment the Leicester chappie as HC.... if you believe even SOME of the stuff that's written, Leicester could now be looking at CC for their new HC....
Confused Sick Dodgy

(as per Salopbaggie's post a few days ago)

RE: 2024 (Shilen Patel) Summer Transfer Window Thread - Stairs - 04-06-2024

Hard to see why Leicester would be so attractive - Yes Premier League but on negative points and a hiding to nothing from day 1.

My biggest concern is that when Patel took over there was rumour about him wanting to bring in a European manager but because of performances on the pitch etc that got put on hold. Maybe it is a CC concern about not being fully invested in and he thinks his time is limited at West Brom.
