I definitely think playing Brunt (has he ever had a worse game) and Barry together was a mistake, but I've got to say that I was pretty impressed with all our youngsters.
Agree that our strikers look very ordinary but, all in all, I think we did well, particularly when Krovinovic came on and looked a class act. I liked the style of our play, looking for the triangles and playing the angles well.

I'm obviously in a minority but, although we lost and Newcastle JUST about deserved it, I'm going to bed a relatively happy bunny  Thumb up

Drewks, I’m in your minority as well. As long as come May we’re in that top 2 the decision to make 9 changes will have been a shrewd one. Play the first XI get a couple of injuries and Bilic would have been crucified.

We go again Saturday back to the important games, let’s be honest we were never going to win the cup and doubtful Newcastle will either

I too am in the glass half full camp, only saw the second half but thought we looked good going forward. Phillips looked hungry although he missed at least one sitter. Edwards run for the second goal was superb. Krovinovic La class act, hope we can sign him if we go up.

Good post, I agree West Brom seconds v Newcastle first team and we nearly got a result. Krovinovic was great, Dara O’Shea was good and is definitely one for the future. Harper looked good but tired the last quarter of an hour. I thought Phillips was great and Zohore made a difference coming on as a sub. Lots of positives for me and hopefully take the positives into the next game.

Sorry to say Brunt and Barry did not work out and may be the last we see of them. If so I have got to say I have loved watching Chris Brunt over many years and wish him well for the future. Many great goals and assists, what a sweet left foot.

Hope the Albion can find a place for him in the training facilities family.

1st half we were shocking and awful
And that's where the most negativity came from a rightly so,
They were all awful in the 1st half end of ...

The second half was a lot better ,krov was great made the side tick, Phillips looked back to himself, and agree the youngsters looked great,
So take the positive with the negatives which the first half was,
The fact that this was our second team did us proud in the 2nd half
..... See where I'm coming from Thumb up

Oh and we should have had at least four in the second half ,poor finishing and lady luck deserted us,

Suppose it's disappointing to think with a couple more first teamers in tonight we would be one game away from Wembley ....

Yep. Plus I think a lot of people's instinctive reactions to the first half performance and the result are affected by what weight they put on this fixture overall. Those who saw it as just a distraction from the league are probably less likely to be bothered by defeat, whereas those of us who really wanted the cup run can't help but despair at how we basically threw it away in the first fifty minutes, especially since the last half-hour showed that our second string *could* give Newcastle a proper game, and might have done a lot better over ninety minutes without that self-inflicted mountain to climb.

Good end to end game tonight but for terrible defending and goalkeeping for 46 mins could have got something out of the game. Overall our second string nearly got us back into it especially when Krov came on he totally turned the game in our favour. Good mentions for Harper, Edwards and Phillips I also think Zohore deserves a place on bench on Saturday seemed to do more in 10 mins than Austin did in 80 mins .

I totally understand some being happy with the positives to come from the game, but it depends on your out look. Where as I see the PL as a cash cow others see it as the target. I still feel the greatest moment in my WBA lifetime is winning the FA Cup. We constantly look to make excuses every year why as a club it's no longer worth winning. We're either focused on relegation or promotion. Do we have a hope of getting within 3 wins of winning the PL, I don't think so. Did we get within 3 wins of winning the FA Cup yes and we play our reserve squad against a full strength PL team who are struggling against relegation. I get so disappointed we treat the cup with such contempt. It's a wonder any fans bother going to watch or even support a club that can't be bothered. We only put on 1 or 2 first teamers and we almost won. I'm not happy with the club, the management and for me promotion will not make me forget how poorly us the fans are respected and treated.
Rant over.

It's a matter of opinion, obviously, but I don't think we were even that 'shocking, awful ' in the first half.
Newcastle were very sharp* and, as a lot have said, Brunt and Barry just didn't have the legs and so we were looking very vulnerable whenever they ran at us.
But I still think that we looked OK apart from that - toothless maybe, but fairly neat in possession, wanting to play the game in the right way.

*their guy with the dreadlocks who hit the post with that cracking shot looked very, very good and ran the show in the first 45 Thumb up

Blue, I also remember our cup win in 68, and regret the way that this great competition is now treated as second best. Big time.
BUT.... I think that you were saying that lots of players were looking 'leggy' a couple of games ago...... so they have been rested here.

It's a Catch 22 thing but I personally can understand the club treating promotion as our priority - as you say the PL is the Cash Cow that, as a business, they cannot ignore.

Interesting how we all have slightly different thoughts and views on the same issues though!

Problem is I'm not convinced the "leggy" issue is fatigue - IMO it's not due to games played, our most energetic player by a long way was Krov last night.
Pereira our worst performer against wigan had just had a suspension he should have been fresh. His recent celebrations showed he was at 110%.
It wouldn't be so bad if it was one or two players who had an off day, but often it's the whole team. I am beginning to see a pattern now that our first half performances are poor in the majority of our games. We come alive in the 2nd half - we often come back from losing positions, some think this shows fight and determination. For me we have got it all wrong, if we can't get going quickley we must learn how to contain the opposition and stop them from playing for 20-30 minutes. Then we should push on when they tire a little, we appear to be at our most dangerous when we should be tired, so the fatigue problem doesn't compute with me. Logic tells me we can't be tired everytime we play a team at home from the lower part of the table. It's cannot just be a coincidence.
So that tells me it's a motivational / mental issue. Hence me continually raving we need a captain who can keep a bunch of multi-millionaires focussed.
Sure we have different opinions as to how we improve and what the underlying issues are, that's what this forum is for.
I'm always interested to read other posters opinions and thoughts, but please - not if it's "YOUR OPINION IS CRAP" as some poster do? It may well be, but I would prefer to see exactly what they/you see as our issues are and how they believe we can improve.

RE: WBA vs Newcastle - FA Cup Fifth Round Match Thread - WBA-Josh - 04-03-2020

I think the central 3 in the first half was a big mistake by Slaven. Barry sitting was fair but Harper and Brunt in front of him just didn't work. Brunt didn't offer enough higher up the pitch other than a couple of crosses and Harper didn't get higher up the pitch enough for me. When Krovinovic came on and Brunt dropped back into Barry's role, that is what changed the game. Suddenly we had a driving force in the centre and Krovinovic ran the game. He also brought Harper more into the game as he got forward more.

I was also not too impressed with O'Shea in the first half. Bruce deliberately stuck Joelinton on him and Almiron was on Bartley's side but floating around. I thought O'Shea was too lightweight in that first half and lacking the physicality needed to play against Joelinton. He was better in the second half.

I'm not particularly fussed about us losing because, while a cup run is always nice, finishing in the top 2 is the most important.
