The second round (so to speak) on the following Saturday (and this after the North Yorkshire military had arrived too) was a nasty business, with the stabbings, good to hear the perpetrators were all eventually arrested.

The town's name, Wick, comes from the old Norse word 'Vik' which meant 'bay'. The Norse pronounced 'Vik' as "Week' (indeed the word 'Viking' or 'vikngr' was pronounced 'weekinger'), which is how the town is still known in Caithness to this day.
The other main settlement in Caithness - Thurso - takes its name from the old Norse term for 'Thor's river' - 'Thor-sa' or 'Theorsa'. Locals still refer to the town as 'Thursa' with a soft 's', never a hard 's' or 'z' sound. Thursa, not Thurzo.
There's no escaping the Norse influence in Caithness.

Jan de Groote was a Dutch trader who settled in Caithness back in the fourteenth or fifteenth century. He operated a ferry to Orkney after the Norse gave the islands back to the Scots.
The Caithness dialect word for stomach - 'boug' - strongly resembles the Dutch equivalent - 'boik'. I've often suspected there's a link through old Jan.
