I beg to differ Thurny and I'm sure SCO and Stateside will back me up but Canadians actually know about World Geography and not just the local 25 mile area so they would never qualify as Yanks and yes their accent is very different.
BTW as a dual citizen i am completely bi-lingual in tires and tyres or color and colour etc but if England were playing the USA I would still be suporting England as I did in the real "World Cup" even with Greens GK impersonation of Gary Sprake

I may live in America but I will always be English and consequently will always support England above all others!!
But the use of American spelling and cliches is unfortunately mandatory unless I want to look like more of an idiot than I already do!!!!

That why I referred to my Northern accent, having grown up in Australia I never developed a Sheffield accent but do sound northern!! Its a bit like when I am asked where I am from I say England, I never say the UK or Britain, just England. That makes it a bit easier for Americans as they see think the UK and Britain are part of England anyway!!

They have definitely moved on from thinking we all know the Queen, although I do occasionally get asked if I have met any of the Royal Family!!
My response is usually asking them if they have met the President!!As for the London thing, when asked where I am from I always used to say "Sheffield, a city 160 miles north of London", now I find myself saying "Sheffield, a city 40 miles East of Manchester" and that usually works now that "soccer" and particularly the Premier League is much more closely followed over here, especially after Beckham came over here.
