RE: Newcastle vs WBA - Match Thread - St Charles Owl - 10-05-2015 I think there will be a compromise between them and the FL. There has to be some punishment handed out to them or else you might as well scrap the rules and allow a free for all to continue!! Prior to FFP, clubs in the Championship had debts of nearly 1 billion pounds, all on the promise of getting to the prem, that has to be curtailed and FFP was designed to allow clubs some debt but for it to be kept in line somewhat with revenues. This isn't just 'under Pulis' - it's been a problem all season. We've scored 4 goals from open play away. 1 under Irvine (Varela at QPR) 1 under temp staff (Saido at West Ham) 2 under Pulis (Victor at Blues). This is a problem that needs to be addressed. Clearly, both Irvine and Pulis had a similar style away from home 'defend first and foremost', but we don't really have the players to expose teams on the break. Apart from McManaman, we don't have a natural midfielder who can really break at pace and he's been unfortunate with injuries. Sess is an option, but always played better football up top. I think it'll be fair to judge Pulis on 'creativity' next season. He likes players who can break forward at pace with quality, like he inherited at Palace, but that's a stark contrast to the likes of Gardner, Brunt and co. Hopefully the players we bring in during the summer will help to address this issue. I think he's got the best out of the players at his disposal to set us up to be stubborn but threatening from set plays. Given the players we have, if we were not so good from corners, we'd probably be staring down the barrel now. Lets hope VILLA sign him then ![]() RE: Newcastle vs WBA - Match Thread - valpayne - 11-05-2015 Pulis inherited a squad that lacked certain qualities. He identified the problems and put a system in to suit that squad. They lack pace so defending in numbers being hard to break down and being organised whilst making the most of set plays was the best option and he got us over the line. First job done. The next problem we have is Jeremy Peace selling the club because that might throw a big old spanner in the works. Could be an interesting summer |
