And your point is Matt? Who was the manager that brought in those players?

RE: Martin Allen has left the club - Devongone - 07-01-2019

From the other end of the country it looked as though we gave Sheridan a four-year contract and in return he didn't recruit at all, didn't fight for a replacement for Davies, whose wage we refused to meet, do anything about Ford and Mattis who were not the same players they'd been the season before, address the Tommy Lee problem, which wrecked the first half of our season ......... And the result was a team which wasn't good at scoring or stopping goals ........ and only looked the part when Leon Clarke hit a going day. Whatever the investment provided, Sheri produced a team as bad as the previous season's side had been good. (And the JPT was the equivalent of a series of friendlies all the way to the semis ..... IMO.)

I still shudder when I think of a central defence with Trottman and Ford in it and a front 2 of Bowden and Bowery.

Sheridan ruined Jamie Lowry's career in football. It was obvious he saw Lowry as a weak character and he took full advantage of it. Lowry was a cracking good footballer until Sheridan got into him.
I seem to remember that Lowry was gay. Whether it was that Shez wasn't happy with I dont know but the way he used to bawl him out on the field of play was embarrassing. Lowry was singled out time and time again, you could see his head go down and that was it.

Also Matt I think if you check you will find Tommy Lee played nearly all season and only missed about 10 games or so. I think Lester played until Christmas as well.

It looks like it is Sheridan as Tommy Smith let it out in his interview after the Carlisle game. I for one am not a happy bunny.

But a lot of successful managers aren`t very likeable people, Dancing. At the end of the day – certainly in football – they`re judged by results and by and large they achieve that by motivating their players; and different players are motivated in different ways. Some need the ’arm round the shoulder’, some need the ‘kick up the arse’.

Don`t get me wrong. I`m not advocating JS as the ideal next manager for us; I`m not even sure he`d be my choice (although I`m not sure who would, to be honest) but in general terms I don`t like the idea of managers going back to clubs where they`ve had a bit of success previously. As far as I can see, although I can think of a couple of exceptions, it rarely works second time around and, as you say, he succeeded only to fail later with us.

Anyway, from what you say it sounds as though it`s a done deal.

John Sheridan.

Lester broke his arm on 3rd September was a 0-0 draw, just checked, remember seeing him go down as it was right in front of the South Stand.

Tommy Wright not Tommy Smith. Also sounds like he wants the Carlisle job.

That season Tommy Lee played 35 league games for us, but he wasn't there when the decimated team (from our promotion) was finding its feet and the keeper who was specifically signed as serious competition for him, Greg Fleming proved pretty poor behind an ever-changing defence. Sheridan treated us to 15 different players in defence that season .... which seems a strong explanation for our failure (and 12 loans hardly helped):-

Neal Trotman 23 games
Gregor Roberston 14 games
Jamie Lowry 2 games + 4 as sub
Simon Ford 18 games
Greg Fleming 9 games + 1 as sub
Drew Talbot 43 games
Nathan Smith 22 games + 3 as sub
Dean Holden 9 games + 5 as sub
James Hurst 10 games
Ole Soderberg 2 games
Jonathan Grounds 13 games
Scott Griffiths 3 games
Josh Thompson 20 games
Liam Ridehalgh 20 games

Jamie Lowry was gay? I didn't know that. I thought Hitzlesperger was our only known gay player.

Bowery played 48 games that season, but I don't think he combined too often with Boden for full games, because Craig Westcarr was there most of the time and Mendy played most weeks too.

When you look how durable Drew Talbot was in those days it's a shame that some of Bobs that somehow he's guilty of the injuries he suffers these days. He played 51 games in all that season.

Don't know where I got that from Dev. Am sure it was something I read after he finished his pro career. Didn't he end up playing somewhere in North Devon?

RE: Martin Allen has left the club - Devongone - 10-01-2019

Jamie's Cornish. He went to Godolphin Athletic in the SW Peninsula as manager. He's not too ugly to be gay!

Sheridan seemed to pick on players. Certainly he wrecked Jamie's chances of making it back after serious injury. If you remember Derby were on the verge of putting in a decent bid for him when he did the cruciate. Sheridan used to pick on Austin too. I saw him shout at the defender throughout an entire game!

Sheridan may or may not be homophobic, but he's certainly humanophobic.

He's a youth coach at Plymouth Argyle and play's football for Plymouth Parkway now.

Who care's if a player is gay or not? It's 2019. I don't care if a player is straight, gay, bisexual just as long as they put the effort in on a Saturday afternoon at 3pm.

RE: Martin Allen has left the club - Devongone - 10-01-2019

I'd like the world to be like you Matt, but at the moment we are the stage where we need some gay or bi-sexual players to come out so that when growing up young people don't have to feel that being gay and good at sport are incompatible ........ like I did. You don't actually have to be a hairdresser if you're gay! You can be a goalkeeper if you want.

You know how many openly gay male tennis players there are in the top 250? Zero! The last male gay Grand Slam winner was? Bill Tilden, who won 10 slams I think. And though the perception of female tennis players is that loads of them are lesbian, I can only think of one who is out of the closet and I've forgotten her name, but she's Belgian and played well at Wimbledon. And it's a long name like von something or other.

We've got a long way to go. But it'll be great when someone's sexuality is just another question, like do they like paella?
