RE: scotlands game - 0762 - 02-09-2016 The Russian match result was secondary to the crazy loss of goals v New Zealand in Malaga and the chat, before and after that first NZ match with many Celtic fans, was about McGrain being wrongly fielded at full back from the very beginning of our group and eventually being 'skinned alive' on his flank. Their qualified view was that McGrain's season was done and they were right!! Sure, Hansen and Miller's collision was unimpressive but it most certainly was not the only factor that eliminated us from a decent group and with a decent squad of players to choose from. And Stein is not the only Scotland manager to have made that classic error of loyally holding on to a long established player for far too long and paying the price for it! RE: scotlands game - hibeejim21 - 03-09-2016 scotland never lost a world cup game mcgrain played in,i can forgive any scotland manager wanting him in the team. RE: scotlands game - Fredstersafool - 03-09-2016 I never knew that stat Jim and that just verifies his inclusion but 0762 has point about loyalty,to be honest if John Brownlie hadn't had his leg break (he was still good but not as)IMO he would've been Scotland's full back he was a better player than Mcgrain and 7 caps is just not what he deserved. RE: scotlands game - hibeejim21 - 03-09-2016 Brownlie would have gone on to be one of the greatest scottish players of that generation IMO. Mcgrain was a great, brave player and jardine was a fine full back too but JB had far more dimensions to his game than both of them. Was a tragedy what happened. RE: scotlands game - 0762 - 03-09-2016 Caused by a cynical player named Printy as E Fife played to disrupt Hibs, and Brownlie's, foraging runs. The rest is history and a tragedy for JB and the Scotland international team. RE: scotlands game - hibeejim21 - 03-09-2016 Our squad in argentina was scarily strong too.....but lets not dwell on that ![]() RE: scotlands game - Fredstersafool - 04-09-2016 We should have won the 78 World Cup,Ally Macleod told us we'd win it I was 11 and very sad lol,had to love Ally though his enthusiasm was incredible but that tournament killed him he looked a broken man,I'll never forget his quote when asked , what will you do if Scotland win the World Cup??, answer,Defend it. Brilliant. RE: scotlands game - hibeejim21 - 09-09-2016 Part 3 showed the exact moment Scottish fitba went into decline. One point the national team was managed by giants of the game like Waddell, stein or Ferguson. Then we began associating with clowns like levein and burley. RE: scotlands game - Fredstersafool - 09-09-2016 I've never been back to a Scotland game since we beet Cyprus 2-1 at hampden Roxburgh was the start of our downfall ok we qualified but you could see what was coming RE: scotlands game - hibeejim21 - 09-09-2016 Roxburgh and Brown have the stats to prove the blame for the game going wrong in Scotland isn't down to them. But I think they killed a lot of the enthusiasm of the support and players,so i can see where you are coming from. Could have done without seeing Leighton at that brazil shot tae fred. Trying to remove that from the memory banks. ![]() |
