Bugger - wish I'd thought to put a tenner on that

Why don't the commentators in football learn from those in tennis and just shut the fek up at times - we can see what's happening!! Angry

Belgium 2-0 England.

Expected result with the two 11’s on show.

There’s a good base there for Gareth Southgate to work on. The 352 has been good but I think he needs to spend the next two years looking at putting together a plan B in addition to the 352 so he has the options at the Euros of playing two systems (4231 for example). The best teams at this tournament have been able to play in multiple systems and to be one of the best England has to be able to as well. There is also some more good young players coming through who should be brought in. Ryan Sessegnon should be in for Ashley Young for example.

Overall, the future should be bright as long as this progress is maintained.

QE, disagree.
Tunisia - certainly no mugs.
Panama - job done, unlike v Iceland in Euros
Columbia - now you ARE joking? Thugs, spoilers, decent footballers when they try it
Sweden - who did they knock out along the way?

IMHO there's real cause for optimism; we would've been frozen by fear in these games even a year ago, and Mr Southgate deserves immense credit for making such a dramatic change in their mentality in such a short time

RE: World Cup 2018 - Imre varadi - 14-07-2018

we cant beat anyone in the top 10 is my view and offcourse we got lucky with the draw (best game southgate tactics was against Belguim in the group that was the only time he used his nouse ) and at the end of the day we cannot get past our loser menatality wich was obvious to see when we tried defending after that 5th minute goal and werent to bothered about hitting the goal or row 6 in the stands ! watch this space because as soon as France score in the first half tomorrow they will go on and score another 2 or 3 as they bother about winning and not too much about losing .. they will end the game without breaking sweat !!

RE: World Cup 2018 - BaggieSteve - 15-07-2018

I honestly think that, with this squad of players, England have done the best they could. The only two teams we comprehensively beat were an abject Panama and a dour, uninspiring Sweden. When we came up against teams that had that spark of flair and creativity, most notably Belgium and Croatia, we were greatly lacking. We have no players that are even close to De Bruyne, Hazard, Modric and Racitic. I appreciate these are exceptional footballers but Colombia and, at times, Tunisia exceeded us in their technical skill. We have midfielders who, in the words of our much lamented previous coach, work aard and will play within a structure but don't have that spark that will change a game out of nothing. Let's be honest, in watching our games in this tournament, most is got our hopes up when we got a corner or free kick as the likeliest source of a goal.

This is not a criticism of Southgate, I think he did a very good job with what he had; it's just that what he had wasn't good enough. By and large, PL midfields tend to be stocked by creative foreign players supported by hard working English/British yeomen. Can't help thinking that, as long as that continues, England will be destined to be continued plucky losers

RE: World Cup 2018 - WBA-Josh - 15-07-2018

France
Lloris
Pavard - Varane - Umtiti - Lucas
Pogba - Kante
Mbappe - Griezmann - Matuidi
Giroud

Croatia
Subasic
Vrsaljko - Lovren - Vida - Strinic
Brozovic
Rebic - Modric - Rakitic - Perisic
Mandzukic

Come on Croatia.

RE: World Cup 2018 - BaggieSteve - 15-07-2018

Griezmann dives, gets a free kick, France score! Is there any hope of stopping the cheating divers we’ve seen in this tournament?

RE: World Cup 2018 - WBA-Josh - 15-07-2018

2-1 France now.

I’m not sure that was a penalty. Looked like gravity taking over Perisic’s arm movement in my opinion. There was no deliberate movement towards the ball.
