Irvine uses friendly to step up fitness levels

ALBION hope to use a behind-closed-doors Under-21 friendly against Hull tomorrow to help increase the fitness levels of several of their summer signings.

The club have utilised the current break to good effect, with those not on international duty who missed out on a full pre-season programme undergoing double sessions daily in a bid to get up to speed, while Joleon Lescott has also been in the US undergoing a specific fitness routine.

The England defender is one of those marked down for potential involvement against the Tigers tomorrow – along with the likes of Cristian Gamboa, Silvestre Varela and Sebastian Blanco.

Georgios Samaras and James Morrison could also possibly get game time, depending on their involvement for respective nations Greece and Scotland.

Like to give all players the benefit of the doubt, many players have a great season then have an off year, before returning to their original form. As has been said before form is temporary class is permanent, we have not got or had many players that have captained national sides in FIFA's top ten, Argentina are one such side, Yacob is therefore not all bad, we have many players from nations towards the top end of FIFA's chart and when all fit and all gell we can expect nae demand better performances and results .......

At least Pocognoli's fit for Everton. That should be a boost.

RE: More Injuries!!!! - WBA Will - 09-09-2014

Yacob was great in his first season and crap last year, so only time will tell what will happen this year. He didn't look great against Oxford but then neither did anyone else, so let's hope he can get back to his initial form. According to Physio Room we have the second most injuries in the league, behind Man United. If you then add in how many players aren't fully match fit then we only seem to have half a squad!

It seems to me that the reason so many of our new signings aren't match fit is because we were looking for players whose ability is far higher than the money they would cost, due to various issues with their clubs. Blanco didn't want to go back to Ukraine (entirely understandable), Davidson was in a contract dispute with his club, Varela wasn't really in Porto's plans (a Champion's League club), Samaras was out of contract, and then Gamboa was at the World Cup which put him behind straight away. If you offered me a great player who couldn't play for the first month or a pretty good player who was fully fit, I know which one I'd pick.

Things are starting to look a bit better with Lescott getting a full 90 mins in last night against Hull as did Sebastian Blanco. Cristian Gamboa played for 80.

For some reason we still awaiting a full assessment on Youssouf Mulumbu's hamstring, which does not sound good and "Ben Foster, Gareth McAuley and Graham Dorrans are all making progress."

I hate the phrase "making progress" as it tells you nothing, I had a partial tear of a crutiate back in July and am "making progress". It is still difficult to walk up and down stairs, let alone play any sports, but I am "making progress"

Just a silly thought - is our training ground of a different quality to real football pitches - hence injuries.

Or maybe Irvine training methods are too vigorous for 'good' pitches.

I know this may sound stupid but worse things have happened in the past - also with other teams.

Don't shoot me down all at once Angel

I read somewhere recently that at least one of our training pitches (there are several) is an exact replica of the Hawthorns pitch, though obviously minus the stands, etc. The facilities all sound pretty state of the art; apparently there's a special chair in the training complex which costs £750k. Not sure whether it's Jeremy's solid gold throne Big Grin
