Can't argue they out played us with our own style.
RE: Stoke vs WBA - Match Thread - Baggie_One - 01-10-2021
Not sure we had a style tonight?!
Literally no midfield or attacking threat
IF sjoke passed it better - through our half way defensive line they should have scored more
Good save by englands number one though, made up for his rugby tackle
Oh, and a goalkeeper deliberately hand balling out of his area - not a red card ?! Piss poor referee tonight
RE: Stoke vs WBA - Match Thread - Minizin - 01-10-2021
We couldn’t keep the ball up top, we lost the midfield battle, and the defence made mistakes and was caught out on through balls too often. Not great.
We’ve not won a header from a corner for a while either?
Then again, Stoke were good once they stopped playing out from the back

If Hugill is the answer up front, I’d love to know what the question is

Take it on the chin, then - we lost to a better team on the day.
Move on.

Absolute shambles of a performance...
Front 3 couldn't trap a bag of cement.
Overran in midfield.
Defence an absolute joke. Any hoof over the top and Stoke were clean through.
Goalkeeper constantly in no man's land. No man's land for the disallowed goal. No man's land for the goal.
It's hard to criticise the manager because he's doing a good job with what he's got at his disposal. But I would've liked to have seen him act tonight as we were riding our luck from about 20 minutes in. It felt inevitable that Stoke were going to score. But rather than us change to plan B, it seemed we just wanted to plod along and hope that Stoke would keep missing chances.
Stoke had 4 midfielders operating centrally vs our 2, so why not add another body in the middle? Sacrifice one of the front 3 or one of the back 3.
No idea why Townsend is still playing at centre half when Bryan and Clarke are now fit. Guy ducks out of headers. You also lose a threat at the other end from set plays. Such a basic cock up from him for the goal, but he was only ever any good going forward so it's beggars belief he's been playing centre half.
The only positive is that we can't possibly play that bad again... I hope.
Couldn't pick out a single player who played well. Johnstone made a couple decent saves, but even he made 2 or 3 errors. The rest didn't do anything good. Were either appalling (i.e. Robinson) or none existing (i.e. Grant)...
I just hope that doesn't become the norm now. Any teams watching that will release any hoof ball over the top worries us. Johnstone being asked to play sweeper keeper has cost us 2 goals now (QPR and tonight) as it's much easier to score from 20 yards when a keeper is stranded vs having to beat him with a long range shot if he's on his line. Maybe we need to add a plan B into the mix for these games.

I really think we are missing Townsend in his normal position. We have not been the same team since he moved to centre back, except for the Cardiff game of course.
Looking forward to Clarke coming back in the side and Townsend being released to bring in his deliveries to the box.

It was bad, but you’re criticising a goalkeeper who saved a penalty, saved the free kick, saved two more point blank. We play the high line so he comes out of goal - at least he doesn’t panic and grab the ball like the Stoke keeper.
One loss in 11 isn’t bad. But we do need to find more control in games

Johnstone did make some good saves, which I highlighted. Penalty was a great save.
BUT the penalty was his fault. Really shoddy parry out that Stoke should've scored from (great block from Ajayi) and then when we clear the ball, Johnstone brings their bloke down as he's trying to do too much to make up from his mistake. Now don't get me wrong, it was a soft penalty, but there was no need for him to be in touching distance.
He's a great shot stopper but his decision making coming out isn't the best and IMO being in no man's land makes it an easy finish, just like it did for Gray's goal for QPR.
Not blaming him completely as he's clearly being asked to play that role. I'm just not convinced we need to play that high line constantly when we're having an off day and we're giving so many warnings of them getting in from a ball over the top.
I'd like to see us change our tactics from time to time and today I felt it needed to be changed. Easy to say in highsight of course, but it always felt like we were going to lose.
But overall the manager and team have exceeded my expectations with the size / quality of the squad. So credit to him. But would be nice to see a plan B in these scenarios.
