RE: European Union Referendum - In or Out?? - hibeejim21 - 18-10-2016 Once the full impact of the pounds devaluation kicks in i expect it to head north of the bank of England's forecast. May wants to put up interest rates too. I expect a lot of products, services and mortgages to get dearer next year. And even before article 50 is triggered the ordinary punter (many who voted leave) will take a shafting in my opinion. They are already paving the way for one party politics. The new boundary changes coming make it even harder for labour to win and the english sure as hell won't be voting for corbyn no matter how well intentioned he is,his own party will help make it even more impossible. It's an alternative but is going from one party Tory politics to one party SNP politics really that much of an alternative? It all looks a bit Animal Farm-ish to me. At the moment it is true that the SNP has just under 50% of the Scottish Parliament seats but they probably won't be in a minority for long given the rest of the opposition (mostly Tory and Labour) can't get their act together and don't look likely to do so any time soon. Be careful what you wish for. RE: European Union Referendum - In or Out?? - 0762 - 18-10-2016 What you are 'missing' is that the Scottish gov is practising good pragmatic politics up here that have been accepted by the majority of the Scottish electorate for long enough. They project what I'd call 'outward internationalism' that encompasses many fundamental principles of a tolerant, pluralist society in Scotland - very different from what we're observing south of the border!! Hence their success in the vote and the belief that they do genuinely represent the interests of our country. There was always gonna be a 'dip in the vote' at some point and that has indeed happened but I'd argue that they are 'still in a good place' and will strengthen up again - it's ultimately their policies and performance in gov that will enhance their positive status. I know what you mean but there is a huge difference between the centre left policies of the SNP and the raving, slavering neo-conservatism the tories are producing. So aye i'll take my chances. Ultimately though I will take whoever the Scottish people decide upon independence. Indeed independence might be the best way for labour to revive its fortunes up here RE: European Union Referendum - In or Out?? - 0762 - 19-10-2016 Aye! A SNLP without Kezia Dugdale who is an absolute embarrassment to the party - one of a series of so called 'leaders' who came nowhere close to attaining the reputation and respectability that is required in order to come close to the First Minister's position! RE: European Union Referendum - In or Out?? - 0762 - 21-10-2016 And the Scottish Green Party confirms it's endorsement of the SNP's consultation on the possibility of staging Scottish Indy 2, mainly because of the 'conflict of interest' between the referendum of 2014 and this recent one that amazingly gave Brexit the 'green light'! Meanwhile our current UK PM, Theresa May says the Scottish govt has no mandate to initiate such a move. I think Nicola should counter that statement by saying she has no mandate to activate article 50 either in the eyes of millions of folk within the UK electorate! RE: European Union Referendum - In or Out?? - St Charles Owl - 22-10-2016 Here is a story that should go down as one of those quirks about the EU that make it undemocratic and look stupid on the world stage!!! http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-37731955 I don't know the background to this trade deal nor the pros and cons of it, but the ability of 3.6m French speaking Belgiums to be able to scupper an agreement that effects 508m people in the EU makes no sense!!! As was stated in the article, this also doesn't bode well for the UK when it tries to broker a deal to exit the EU, and it does open up the the real possibility of the EU struggling to make any trade deals, good or bad, if the Wallonians happen to disagree with it!! The UK would also potentially though be better placed to make trade deals outside the EU when that time comes. RE: European Union Referendum - In or Out?? - 0762 - 22-10-2016 I've picked up on this debate before re there no doubt being more trade outlets with eg China and Japan, potentially trillions of quid but this is all speculative stuff! What interests me is the degradation of trade with our biggest market place (also trillions of quid!) and what I suspect will eventually be proved to be a negative deficit after markets destabilise and then stabilise, lotsa businesses 'ditch' the UK to continue with trading within a market that is 'right on their doorstep'. This side of the financial debate is already being studied by various reputable agencies and we'll eventually perceive the stark reality of all the 'different scenarios' that can be attached to Brexit and it's implications on our economy and future prosperity! RE: European Union Referendum - In or Out?? - 0762 - 09-12-2016 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-38261534 Cameron now defending his stupid decision to hold an EU referendum! I wonder why? Only one word for this guy - a ###### selfish, egotistical IDIOT who has inadvertently incurred a lotta damage to the UK!! ![]() RE: European Union Referendum - In or Out?? - hibeejim21 - 10-12-2016 Was something on the radio earlier about how the EU are going to offer british people the chance to 'opt in' individually as EU citizens. |
