RE: Summer Transfer Thread - spireitematt - 25-08-2015 (25-08-2015, 19:30)SaltergateBorn Wrote: I quite agree, Dev, about the length of the contract; that was the point I was really trying to make, in my own clumsy way. A few fans think O'Neil has been brought in to replace Morsy so I wonder if Morsy is going to leave. 12 months left on his contract do we let him leave on a free or try and get seven figure sum for him, I would say we should get the seven figure sum for him. Also O'Neil is a versatile player because he can play as a defender as well as a midfielder so similar to Clucas. I think looking at the squad we have at the moment we could probably challenge for the playoffs again if we don't get any injuries. I agree at the minute everything seems too good to be true but I think we should enjoy while we can because you never know what's around the corner. RE: Summer Transfer Thread - Dancingwilldoit - 25-08-2015 The icing on the cake would be Morsy signing for another year. I don't think all is lost. Lets wait and see. RE: Summer Transfer Thread - Devongone - 26-08-2015 If we don't give Morsy decent players around him ...... he'll want to leave. But when we bring in those good players we all worry that the plan is to cover for Morsy's departure. So the club can't win and we're all committing ourselves to worrying on a permanent basis. You're both right, we should just be happy if the full squad trots out to play Millwall. If there's a long-term plan here not only don't we know about it, but also we don't know whether it will ever work out as the club hopes. RE: Summer Transfer Thread - spireitematt - 26-08-2015 "Alan Biggs @AlanBiggs1 7m7 minutes ago South Coast rumours of Brighton interest in Sam Morsy...did say would have to be Championship..have to be a very substantial bid, mind you." I think with 1 year left on his contract I don't think any team will make a substantial bid it will be similar to Darikwa transfer if he does leave. I do believe though that if Morsy was on a 2-3 year contract then someone would buy him for a million at least. Morsy like Clucas will be a future Premier League player in a few years. Also rumour of another player coming in. RE: Summer Transfer Thread - bluepooch - 27-08-2015 Its not just about contract length though is it ?.it also depends how much demand there is and we all know how much there should be.i think every championship club would benefit from him .if theres competition for his signature it should drive up the price ,therefore we should hold our nerve .We don't need the money desperately . RE: Summer Transfer Thread - SaltergateBorn - 27-08-2015 Yes, I agree; obviously, if there are 4 or 5 clubs competing for a particular player, that helps drive up his value. Unfortunately, it`s also a fact that in the last year of a player`s contract his value drops off the proverbial cliff. That`s why Hull were prepared to pay what they did for Clucas; because he still had 2 years left on his contract. As has already been said on this thread, the situation with Morsy is more or less the same as Darikwa - and don`t forget there were two clubs after him. We don`t HAVE to sell, I agree, but the club will have the decision to make as to whether we sell now and get decent money for him (probably about the same as for Darikwa or maybe a bit less), sell in January for less still or wait until the end of the season and see him go for nowt. A difficult one, but it`s one the club is going to have to make. At least we seem now to have a couple of players who could do his job in midfield, which we didn`t a few weeks ago. I`ve always thought since the first time I saw him play that SM was a very talented player who could play at a higher level and I think so even more now that he seems to have matured and curbed his temper; he seems to be a lot less easy to provoke than he was 12 months ago. He could certainly play at Champ level for a bigger club than us and one that could pay him a lot more - and if the chance comes, he`d be crazy not to take it. As the saying goes, a pro footballer is only one bad tackle away from the end of his career and they have families to raise and mortgages to pay just like the rest of us. I`d love to see him sign a new contract but sadly I don`t think he will. I would, however, be delighted to be proved wrong - again! RE: Summer Transfer Thread - bluepooch - 27-08-2015 Afraid I have to disagree 'Salter' Morsy is worth a lot of money to us even at this stage.I think he would be very difficult to replace . We should enjoy another season out of him if we cant get a million. Dont cash in !! RE: Summer Transfer Thread - spireitematt - 27-08-2015 Blue, Salter and Dancing you interested in joining the Chesterfield Predication League? I'm giving people till we've played 10 games to join and make predications. RE: Summer Transfer Thread - SaltergateBorn - 27-08-2015 No problem, Pooch; no problem at all. You join a long and illustrious list of people who have disagreed with me (most of whom have turned out to be right, as it happens). To be fair, I actually don`t think we disagree that much. The decision as to whether we 'cash in', as you put it, is not mine to make; it`s the club`s. Ideally, I would love to see SM stay with us - not just for another year, but another 2 or 3 years. I think a combination of him, Martinez (who I`ve already said I rate highly) and O`Neil (who I don`t know so well but from what I`ve been told personally and from what Ska posted a while ago) in midfield could be a real handful at League 1 level. I just don`t think it`s gonna happen. Clubs have to make tough commercial decisions these days about players coming to the end of their contracts; have done ever since Bosman. We`re not a Man United, who can stick two fingers up at Real Madrid over de Gea and say that we`ll forgo £25 million just to show that we`re not prepared to be pushed around by you; we have to accept the realities of our financial status. If we get a concrete offer of something around £500k for a player in the last year of his contract, it`s going to be very difficult for us to turn it down. I don`t know what the club will decide if and when the decision has to be made; I`m just glad I don`t have to make it. Thanks for the invite as regards the Prediction League, Matt. I shall consider very carefully whether I am prepared to make a complete prat of myself by joining in and making clear to the universe my complete lack of knowledge about this stupid bloody game. If past history is anything to go by, I probably will on both counts (join in and make a prat of myself, that is). RE: Summer Transfer Thread - Dancingwilldoit - 29-08-2015 Matt, thanks for the reminder but I would forget more times than I would remember to post plus it would just be between me and Dev as to who came bottom so I'm out. |
