RE: EUROS - St Charles Owl - 07-07-2021

To be fair that doesn't say "We are ready for the Final", it say we are ready for Denmark and a chance of reaching the final.

RE: EUROS - Devongone - 08-07-2021

Well, as usual, because I can't shut up even when I should, so here's few observations:-

We've made the Final because we cheated. If that was a penalty I'm a zebra.

The pundits hardly seemed to mention Kyle Walker who was the best player on the pitch. His speed blunted Denmark's attacking threat and was a threat to their defence too. He was fckuing heroic.

Denmark, with inferior players, were the superior team until they started making substitutions, which all seemed directed at weakening their team.

Schmeichel failed with the penalty because it was too easy. If he'd known it would be that bad he would have held it. Had it been a shot in open play he would have held it. You can't really blame a keeper for not saving a penalty, but he must be blaming himself big time.

Jordan Pickford looked on the edge of having a conniption fit throughout the game. His kicking was desperate. If you build a wall and then can't see the ball, you've got something wrong. He seemed to see the goal late. To save a ball at that height he needed his body higher off the ground and more horizontal and he should have been going for the ball with his left hand not his right (Because you can then do much more to deflect the shot). If you are beaten in the top corner from a free kick that ain't so bad, but that was stoppable width and height wise. Nevertheless I've always believed if no one had come up with defensive walls, someone would have invented attacking walls. But Pickers did look very Sunday League Division 3 on that one, and the goal scorer looked shocked to have scored!

Southgate can hardly move for encomiums, so let me say taking off Grealish for Trippier must be the crassest move of these championships. We sat five at the back and invited Denmark forward, which was the only way they had by then to get forward. Grealish up front would have held on to the ball and prevented us coming under pressure. Bringing on an extra defender and sitting back as you always do with five at the back was the worst defensive move ever.

The more I watch, the more I think we look better with three at the back and two wing backs. Italy's weakest players are full backs. I'd load out wide. Walker as third defender, James in at right wing back, and we wouldn't drop Shaw anyway. In midfield we need two defensively based players to match up theirs. Up front, well Sterling short of arsenic-poisoning will play. Kane is going to be there and I'd go with Grealish instead of Mount and tell him he had got 70 minutes to cause havoc, thread passes, beat men and also go out wide occasionally to humiliate the full back. Kane, who is a genuine number nine, I would tell him to play as a false nine rather than making Chiellini and Bonucci's day by going up against them. Spain caused them all sorts of problems that way, but had no one to finish. Kane likes dropping off centre backs anyway. Do it on Sunday Harry, big-time, they'll hate it. The rest of you get in the space created to take advantage. Harry too, if they follow you, leave them there and make a run. Subs ..... looking planned would be nice. Rashford for Sterling, Foden for Grealish, Bellingham if we are losing for a midfielder, Henderson if we are winning. Saka if we are losing for James at wing back. As all this is fantasy, what will happen will largely depend on whether Italy are as knackered as they looked against Spain. If Chiesa is fully fit he'd give anybody trouble. And by the way whatever we do, don't hang up crosses for Donnaruma to catch. He loves doing it. They feed his confidence. Whip difficult balls in front of him, make him move his feet a lot and adjust his position, he doesn't like that. And of course we have to pray that either Pickford is on a going day or that Italy haven't noticed just how fragile he is.

Very good post, to their credit a few of the England pundits pointed out that the penalty absolutely wasn't (there were 2 balls on the field when it happened for a start) and should have been overturned by VAR. Sterling and Kane were both at it all night.

I felt a bit sorry for Denmark, they played well until their legs went after the hour. The exertions of Baku clearly took a lot out of them but they were still pretty composed in extra time and might even have forced a shootout....I guess UEFA would not have wanted a Denmark v Italy final though.

Obviously you have a real chance to win it now, I wouldn't change it too much if I was Southgate. The Italian fullbacks are the weakness and I thought England exploited the wide areas well last night.

Italy will be a different beast though if they have the legs for it. They are masters of the dark arts for a start, and their high press is second to none. They have a wonderful finisher in Chiesa but Immobile does much of the hard work and his movement and energy will be a real threat.

If I had to make a prediction I'd go for a narrow Italian win, but the way the tournaments played out its hard not to feel Englands name is on it.

Nice to see the FA have been fined for crowd disorder. Firstly they prick with the laser pen. But also for the booing of the anthem.
Good old UEFA. We can't claim the moral high ground over the Eastern Europeans and their monkey charts when we do this.
Show some respect, you muppets.

But apparently.......

The penalty decision in our favour was payback for Boris Johnson speaking up against the Super League. Laugh

RE: EUROS - theo_luddite - 08-07-2021

Laugh Laugh Laugh Laugh

What's the chances of England borrowing Schmeichel for the final?

If Pickford had given even one of those many freebies to Italy he'd have been picking it out of his net.

RE: EUROS - hibeejim21 - 08-07-2021

Fans who take laser pens to the football need a right good skelping.

RE: EUROS - WakeyTerrier - 08-07-2021

Hands, touching hands, reaching out
Touching me, touching you....

Ref said it was a pen, VAR said it was a pen, 90% of Wembley said it was a pen so as far as I'm concerned it was a pen.

I still have that dream and 2 tickets to the final.

...Sweet Caroline...woah,woah.woah.
Good times never seem so good!

Yes it was a pen. A LASER pen. I'm a Zebra. Tom Daley has asked Raheem for coaching.

Also can I put in a request to see HibeeJim skelping a few England fans in the pre-match build up? It would certainly brighten up proceedings. I'm not 100% sure what skelping is, but I'm sure the Scots are good at it.

(I am afraid Schmeichel is a bit like his dad though. He has a tendency to blame everything and everyone but himself when the ball ends up in his net.) Kane's penalty was only slightly more likely to score than Olmo's.

RE: EUROS - St Charles Owl - 08-07-2021

Why do we always have to pick holes in an England win?? (Unless you are not English in which case its expected!!) Who is out there criticizing the Italians or Spanish for all the diving and falling over they do? Kane doesn't dive, he shields the ball and when he gets bumped into he goes over, let's have a go at the defender for being stupid!! Denmark's No3 Vestergaard, went down like he had been shot on three occasions, their goal should have been disallowed due to their mini walls position, yet its England who "cheated" their way to the final because the were given a soft pen?? Again, have a go at the defender for making a stupid challenge in the box where he didn't get the ball and forcing the ref to make a decision, that VAR then backed up.

Walker for me was the MOM, closely followed by Shaw. Its ironic that if this game had been played a year ago not one of this back 4 would be in the team, yet as a unit they have been impressive and dominant. They have a nutter behind them in Pickford though, lets hope he had his mental breakdown in this game because at times he was all over the place. If our defence can control their forwards then we can win this but its going to be tough!!

RE: EUROS - Lord Snooty - 08-07-2021

Aye it's a bit ironic that England get slated for one piece of good fortune, after all the shite decisions we've had in the past.

The penalty we did get was very soft indeed. Yes the contact was minimal and yes, you could call it a dive. Who doesn't dive in football these days?

The one on Kane earlier in the match was more of a pen. I shouted penalty as soon as he went down and the replay suggested it should've been given. But like the Sterling "dive", there wasn't enough evidence to overturn the "umpire's decision", to use a cricketing equivalent, on both decisions.

There should also be a similar thing for offsides in my opinion. If the linesman puts his flag up and VAR shows it's minimal, go with the liner's decision. Similarly if he keeps his flag down, stay with his opinion unless it's a howler.
