RE: Let’s Talk About Width… - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 01-12-2014 I agree about Jerome Thomas; incredibly, he was the last natural winger we had who was capable of beating a man. For two and a half years we've laboured without one, despite it being obvious even during the latter months of JT's time with us that we needed a new option (remember us going after Szabolcs Huszti in January 2012?) I've struggled to believe that Irvine doesn't see or understand that we need a wide threat when it's such a basic and obvious problem, but I'm now hoping that it really is stubbornness on his part, because at least stubbornness can be changed. Because if we've arsed up another transfer window - if it turns out Varela's a crock, Blanco's useless and Samaras can't be arsed - then we really are monumentally knobbed. I think, THINK. I'd be tempted by Sessegnon wide. Firstly, I agree that he is (or can be) effective in the wide role. He is our only pace though, and someone like Dorrans (although been poor lately) or even Brunt / Berahino / Samaras could play behind the striker just to make some decent passes, either to the top man, or out wide. I'd go Gamboa behind Sess then and scare the living daylights out of them. That's a very risk strategy though, and I very much doubt we would go for it. It's going to have to be Varela and / Or Blanco. RE: Let’s Talk About Width… - WBA-Josh - 01-12-2014 At PSG when Antoine Kombouaré was in charge, Sessegnon was predominantly used as a right winger in a 4-4-2 which became a 4-2-2-2 when they had possession. When Kombouaré changed to a 4-2-3-1 after the signing of Pastore at the start of the 2010/2011 season, Sessegnon was then either continued out wide or used centrally but he didn't start much. He became the impact player off the bench. I also think Sunderland used him on the right side of midfield at times as well. We could use Sessegnon in a wide role on the right side with Varela on the left side and then James Morrison in the hole behind one of the strikers. It would be a similar sort of set-up to that of Clarke's early days when it was Odemwingie on the right, Gera on the left and Morrison in the hole. Mulumbu-Gardner Sessegnon-Morrison-Varela Ideye/Berahino The above could be a good team to play. We would have the pace and creativity out wide with the hard-working and intelligent Morrison in the attacking midfield position. Morrison will give the lone striker plenty of support like he did with Long and Lukaku, will control the tempo of the game and will give our 5 man midfield an even balance between attack and defence. Sessegnon and Varela out wide will then have the pace and creativity to hurt the opposition and with Berahino or Ideye leading the line, we will have a striker who will score goals and will make intelligent runs in the channels which will pull the opposition defenders out of position. The most alarming thing is,Irvine was a winger in his playing days and a good one at that as far as i remember.Yet he seems totally bereft of any wing playing ideas as a manager.........................will he be gone for Christmas? can't see where the next points are coming from...................... IMO this is by far Mozza's best position and as you say he's got the experience, talent and intelligence to play in this specialist area....can also score a few too playing in a more advanced role. IMO we're wasting his best skills by playing him in a deeper, grafting type of midfield role. It will be the same old line-up RE: Let’s Talk About Width… - BBB - 02-12-2014 Samaras when on the left, always tried to get the ball on his right foot - so on the right wing for me. RE: Let’s Talk About Width… - Luke_East_Baggie - 03-12-2014 How did things go in the "wide" roles last night? Did Irvine put Sess wide (See my post on yesterday dinner time on this thread) Sorry missed the game last night - How did Anichebe play and Ideye and Berahino and Varela? RE: Let’s Talk About Width… - Baggie_One - 03-12-2014 Foster on the "wide" role working ok, nobody saw Ted playing that tactic. Cheeky |
