RE: Tale of 2 halves part 2 - Devongone - 07-01-2019

The real sadness is we should still be talking about Will Evans.

I've scored a goal. In fact I did once score five in a game. I've played in goal and wasn't too bad on saving penalties. But not only haven't I, at a much lower grade, never achieved anything like Will Evans did on Saturday, but also I've never heard of anyone grabbing a 95th minute equalising goal in a 3-3 draw clawed back from 0-3 down, and moments later being forced to substitute in goal and saving a last second penalty (from a bloke who has already scored one past the real keeper).

There is hero time and then there is big Will.

I've always liked the idea of a defender who can get his name on the score sheet several times a season, but we've got a real bloke as MA would say with guts to spare, who kept cool and kept thinking in a crisis. Along with our Hall of Legends we should have legendary moments of sheer brilliance ......... and this is one to be viewed up there with Rodney Fern taking Sheffield Wednesday apart.

To be fair Dev it was a piss poor penalty. Evans seemed to react slowly and moved in slow motion but still managed to save it. I think they call it justice because how that was ever a penalty I do not know. If the linesman saw Burton strike out he must have seen the Ebbsfleet player holding Burton back.
Have you seen the highlights and what do you think?

If we get a points deduction then I think it will be another relegation. There's no need to run on to the pitch when you've scored an equaliser or a winner in the last minute, it's just xxxx stupid.

I`ve just watched the highlights on SD and really don`t know what all the fuss is about. Not a lot seemed to happen in that second half; I don`t think I missed that much!

It looks like it wasn`t just some of our supporters who got carried away and lost their heads after the equaliser; our `keeper seemed to manage to join in. What Callum Burton did was just plain daft; if you raise your hands to another player`s head, let alone swing an arm at it, you`re likely as not going to get a red card. If you`re already on a yellow card to start with, it`s almost a certainty you`re going to. I don`t think that`s weak refereeing, Dancing; I think 99% of referees would have offed him for that, whatever the other player may or may not have done.

The one thing I might argue about is whether it should have been a penalty. To me, it looked like it happened on the line or maybe even outside the area so should perhaps have been a free-kick. You can see the referee turn round and talk to the linesman - whilst she`s holding the card up, I think – so I`d be inclined to bet a pound to a penny that she`s asking whether it`s inside or outside the area. If that`s the case, it`s the linesman that`s made that decision.

I`ve always wondered whether `keepers generally commit themselves too early when they`re facing a penalty and whether they might save a lot more of them if they stayed on their feet longer. If they did that, perhaps they wouldn`t make it so easy for the taker to decide which side to put the ball. To my eyes, that`s exactly what Will Evans did. That put the taker under pressure to decide himself which side to put it, he lost his nerve at the last second and, as Dancing says, it was a piss-poor penalty as a result. Maybe justice was done after all.

I see from the website that the club has issued a few banning orders as a result of what`s gone on the last couple of games. No surprise there; I think they had to and they should. Make them life bans as far as I`m concerned. My only concern is how enforceable they are; with electronic turnstiles, if the individuals get somebody to buy a ticket for them, how can they be kept out of the ground? Hopefully there`s a way.

I`m not too concerned about a points deduction myself, Matt; the FA don`t normally do that for crowd misbehaviour. It`s more often a hefty fine and/or ground closure, both of which I reckon are distinctly possible. Funnily enough, I`m inclined to think that a ground closure might work to our advantage; if the players can play without the pressure of a (frequently) hostile crowd on their backs, they may actually put in a far better performance.

We`ll just have to wait and see on that one.

Agree 100% its a red card but he was fouled before he struck out and thats why he struck out. It was just plain stupid but IMO never a penalty. I thought the rule used to be a penalty award if a goal scoring opportunity was denied. Burton had the ball and was fouled. He then acted stupidly and should have walked but why was it a penalty.

Talking of Burton, I think his last few games he has gone off his game somewhat, a few weeks ago I would have said we should try and sign him but am not so sure now. Their second was a nutmeg through his legs!!! His distribution has got worse and he doesnt seem as confident. I dont know who our goalkeeping coach is but there's a certain Tommy Lee who I dont think is doing much atm.

Blackpool got deducted 3 pts when they went on the pitch and got a game abandoned.

We've had 2 pitch invasions within 10 days, I think it's going to be more than a fine.

RE: Tale of 2 halves part 2 - SaltergateBorn - 08-01-2019

That`s a bit of an extreme case though, Matt - causing the match to be abandoned. That`s probably why there was a points deduction.

I take your point about the 2 in 10 days and there are sure to be serious consequences, but I`d still be surprised if it went that far. Whatever happens, though, I hope the bloody idiots involved will all be thoroughly proud of themselves.

New manager to be announced tomorrow, apparently. Are we all on the edge of our seats in anticipation?
