Yeah totally agree 4Eva
But the precedent for not picking more than one Black Player for the World cup was awful if true,
They we as much to blame as the people who threw Bananas on the pitch in my eyes Thumb up

Its a conspiracy theory so not officially true, however I would given the FA and such doubt I would be far off
Look at today`s society all the rules and laws about political and racial correctness are being passed by people who earned their land and titles from slavery!

Great call on Statham the best he won was a B call up! Same with the very classy Brendan Batson

Think Remi Moses would have made a fine England player also

Peter Barnes never won an England cap whilst at WBA , apart from Coppell the wingers were very pedestrian used by the England team at that time

Showing my age "I Remember"
DS was better that's a fact, but it's a lot to do with the funny handshake society in the 60s, 70s & 80s.
I think Big Ron was very influential in the promotion of black players with ourselves and the Seals
during the 70's & 80's - Batson also moved into the political football arena. This helped break down
barriers that were evident at those times.
Wba have had lots of influence within the FA over the years, which should have helped, but alas
unwritten rules were the rules at the time. Bert M was chairman for 15 years. Interestingly the
"Presidents" position has been held by relatives of the queen on many occasions.
Robbo after his move to M Ure was soon installed as England Captain to boot. (Strange that)
He soon pushed Ray Wilkins nose out.
Manchester and London have always and still have first pick for England squad players.

This sort of sh*te has always happened - or always used to happen - with so called unfashionable clubs.
As said,  Bryan Robson was a classic example of that.... I remember there actually being a "Robson for England" movement going on because he was producing fantastic performances week after week but constantly getting overlooked by England; straight after he went to Utd he was picked.
Another was the cricketer Chris Broad - scored a billion runs for Glos but ignored by England..... went to Notts and selected straight away.

Both of these two proved their pedigree by then staying and starring in the national teams for many years.... so why were they deemed not good enough before their moves?

Unbelievable bias and 'old school tie' attitude. I'd like to think it's changing nowadays.....?

I wasn't around back then but nowadays I do think there is a big gap between the top 6 and everyone else cos of the money they invest into their squads and most players at big clubs are just better than the players everywhere else. Anyway back to Laurie, I've seen videos of him taking corners with the outside of his foot, which obviously blew my mind, did he do it here or only after he went to Real?

He did the lot why he was here mate, you name it he did it, Thumb up
As Drewks mentioned the game against Valencia was probably one game that Laurie Excelled in more than others, Sadly for Albion, Valencia who had world cup winners in their squad, Mario Kempes being the most famous were a Spanish side , shortly after Real Madrid came knocking Angry

RE: For the Old To Remember, For The Young to Learn ! - turkeydinner - 26-10-2018

Only Man Utd player at the time in the England squad was Ray Wilkins
Only Man Citeh player at the time in the England squad was Joe Corrigan
Robson made his debut in 1980 as a WBA player, went to the Euro champs as a WBA player, only him and Wilkins were Man Utd players in 1982 WC, my absolute hero growing up

Greenwood did have a leaning towards Liverpool players though, be very easy to say Venables and Southgate have some sort of Spurs Bromance!

WBA if I recall correctly came 3rd in 80-81, Man Utd a very poor 10th, a very organized yet workmanlike Aston Villa won the league yet I write here as a football romantic how good those Ipswich (2nd) and WBA side`s (With Peter Barnes replacing Laurie) were

Any links BetterthanBaird? That sounds worth seeing!

In recent years there's always been a problem for good players outside London or Manchester Clubs getting into the England team.

As previously mentioned Bryan Robson only became an England regular AFTER he moved to Untd.

Other West Brom examples would be Bomber and Bobby Hope for Scotland.

I think the Scottish FA had a policy at that time that they would not select a player who plied his trade south of the border.

That attitude changed when Dennis Law went south.

However we were obviously regarded as a fashionable Club in the 1950's as we had no fewer than three players who were regularly selected for England:- Bobby Robson, Ronnie Allen and 'The Tank'.

+ Don Howe.

ps I saw Ray Barlow 4 times in Albion shirt, and worshipped him, but was too young to really appreciate him. By all accounts, though, he was maybe our best ever. He got 1 England cap!!
