I suspect you've misremembered there; we did play Brighton on New Year's Day 1990, but it was a home match which we won 3-0. We only ever had two goalless draws at the Goldstone Ground: one in February 1980 and the other in February 1983.

We moved from Bedfordshire down to Seaford in early 1987. Looking back at the records, it wasn't an FA Cup game, and it was definitely at the Goldstone and the Baggies. I do know it was bloody freezing but maybe we lost - it could have been 20 March 1991.

Yep, at The Hawthorns. I travelled up to the match with a couple of Brighton supporter mates, and they got soaked in the rain in the new Smethwick End which was still under re-development at the time. One mate said after the match, "Big club my arse, the away end hasn't even got a roof", to which the other mate said, "Yeah, but there's a reason for that". I seem to remember (though no doubt Ska'd will school me yet again Laugh

) that Brighton took the lead with an absolute stonker of a goal into the Brummie Road End - a shot which a lot of Baggies fans applauded but which the bloke sat next to me uncharitably described as 'hit and hope'.

I think it's very unfair to suggest that Jonny Evans was "on strike " during the transfer window. I can't think of any player least likely to adopt that attitude. The guy's been injured, we've been fortunate to have had Hegazi and Dawson perform so well. Having said that, for me Evans is, by far, the outstanding defender in the club and so, as he's now fit, I'd select him. It seems harsh to drop one of the other two but, in my view, you pick your best players and he's the best, I believe. Having to make a choice, I'd pair Evans with Dawson.

I feel sure we're aiming to play 3-4-2-1 soon. We can't write GaryMac off yet. If he recovers fully he'll still be as good as most Central Defenders (and top goalscorer!) Assuming he makes a full recovery we'll have GaryMac, Ahmed, Evans, and Dawson = 4 top CHs.
(I wonder whether Jonny will leave in January, though).
My Arsenal mate agrees with me that Gibbs is ok going forward, but apt to make defensive errors, so he and Nyom could bomb forward with the luxury of The Pole and Barry defensive midfield to cover.

Fair enough guys, maybe I have just read between the lines on this incorrectly and he genuinely was injured. Either way whoever starts Saturday will get my full undivided support Smile

As for new signings starting, I think its difficult for us to call and we haven't seen if they've had time to gel with the rest of the team.

I think you are right with what you said about not putting him straight back in as Daws and Hegazi have been immense... but I'd be amazed if it wasn't us not playing Evans purposely so that we didn't scupper a potential multi million pound transfer with an injury.

Very much looking forward to tomorrow now... will be on Coach 2 from the Hawthorns leaving 9am. Anyone else on here going by the way? Just a pity we didn't take the extra 400 odd seats as we'd have sold the full allocation easily.

Sometimes players are not match fit not because of injury but external pressures ........ a multi million pound move back to Manchester, where your family home is, is certainly one of those pressures. I am in the process of buying and selling a house to move nearer towards the midlands, the stress and being in limbo, has certainly caused me to be irritable and distracted.

The one thing I clearly remember about that match was everyone around me - and I mean literally everyone - bashing Hunt from pillar to post for three-quarters of the match (it was his Albion debut, we'd just loaned him off Newcastle where his reputation was pretty iffy, and he was loafing about like a bloke who couldn't be arsed.)

"Hunt, yome rubbish!"
"Get yer hair cut!"
"Tuck yer shirt in ya lazy bastard!"

Ten minutes later he had the match ball and was an Albion legend Laugh

I and my parents had to put our dog to sleep this morning so I'm hoping for a WBA win to cheer us up.
