RE: How long ago was your first game? - BaggieMan - 26-08-2017 I've never lived anywhere even near to West Bromwich but my father and grandfather were born and raised there. My earliest memory of West Brom was being lifted over the turnstiles by my father and his brother into the East Stand. I reckon it was early 1950's as the likes of Ronnie Alle and Ray Barlow were playing. I must have been about 5 or 6 and have no recollection whatsoever of the game or who played but it must have got into my blood as here I am now, over 60 years later, still hooked and an avid fan. Went to Wembley when we lost to QPR after 'Chippy' Clark put us two up by halftime and watched us win the FA cup in 1968 thanks to the King. I suppose when old Baggieman goes to the 'Shrine in the Sky' the 120 plus years family connection with West Brom will end. Sad really. ![]() RE: How long ago was your first game? - silverbaggie - 26-08-2017 (26-08-2017, 00:47)BaggieSteve Wrote: August 1962 v Burnley. RE: How long ago was your first game? - Zinman - 26-08-2017 Confession time. My first match was Villa v Chelsea some time in the mid 60's. In my defence I was raised in a family of Villa fans (sadly none of them left now we finally have bragging rights) but saw the light in around 67 as there was no way I was going to support the same team as my brother. Unfortunately I don't remember anything about the game....and I say unfortunately cos apparently Villa lost 2-6! RE: How long ago was your first game? - BaggieMan - 26-08-2017 If we scored six, Uncle Tone would fine every player for spending too much time in the opposition half! ![]() RE: How long ago was your first game? - Bournemouth Baggie - 26-08-2017 (25-08-2017, 12:11)Beefy 1965 Wrote: Last season This isn't about your IQ RE: How long ago was your first game? - derbybaggie - 27-08-2017 My first Match was Aston Villa v Rochdale, 28 August 1971 which Villa won 2-0. My friend's dad made us a bench to stand on so we could see the game in amongst an all standing crowd. Can't say I enjoyed it that much I remember playing tag with my friends because we thought it was boring. My first Albion game was against the Villa, 10 November 1976 a 1-1 draw with over 40,000 in the crowd at the Hawthorns. The latter was a great goalkeeper who came from either Malta or Gibraltar as I recall RE: How long ago was your first game? - silverbaggie - 27-08-2017 (27-08-2017, 05:43)BaggieSteve Wrote:(26-08-2017, 13:30)silverbaggie Wrote:(26-08-2017, 00:47)BaggieSteve Wrote: August 1962 v Burnley. I think it was Smith 4 and the Tank 2 Steve I wonder whether you can remember whether Bobby Robson was playing for Fulham that day as I know he left us in 1962 to go back to the Club we bought him from. Such a shame and all because the Chairman wouldn't give him a pay rise even tho he was Club Captain and so we lost a truly great player for the sake of a few pounds. Fast forward 55 years and nothing's changed. ![]() RE: How long ago was your first game? - talkSAFT - 31-08-2017 April 1958 (I was 8). Walked to the ground from Handsworth with my brother and Dad. We beat Leicester 6-2 with Bobby Robson getting a hat-trick. The maqjestic Ray Barlow was playing centre-half, and we had Ronnie Allen, Stu Williams, and the Tank all internationals. RE: How long ago was your first game? - Baggie_One - 04-09-2017 VS Wolves in the early 1980's. I remember the smell of the brewery as i made my way to the ground. I think we lost 2-1, however, it was a vision of one of our supporters with a broken leg using his crutch as a weapon that sticks in my head for some reason. |
