RE: Wow ! - Devongone - 07-08-2017 GC is a strange combination of Walter Mitty - embracing and discarding tactical formations as the wind changes - and an unimaginative Mick-McCarthyesque-centre-back who at the first sign of trouble ditches the young lad/s and starts trying to dig his way out of the trench he has spent all week in training digging for his team. Why would anyone sign player/s for positions we already had covered and not sign any players capable of reinforcing areas that even a novice could see were stretched? What on earth is he thinking? I can only judge GC by results because I can't even guess what he is thinking. What he's doing might actually work, because for all I know he may be applying String Theory to football. What kind of neural pathway sees a blank team sheet and starts writing ANYON, WISEMAN, HIRD, EVATT .... for chrissakes? Hopefully Wednesday will play George Hirst up front with just one of their many more experienced choices. At least that should guarantee us an interesting thrashing. I genuinely fear for us and not only against The Owls. It is not that we haven't got players who can play. It's that even when we get a team that works, as in the friendly against Donny, we clearly don't know why and how it worked. I really do hold a Masters Degree called The Analysis of Decision Processes and I can make no decent analysis of what is going on at Chesterfield. There's a Ph.D or even a book to be written. Self-help books are popular; I don't know about self-harm. RE: Wow ! - spireitematt - 07-08-2017 If you look at the starting XI which played on Saturday and the players we have at the club I don't think that was our strongest side by a long chalk. Also why did they play a formation which had never been tried before. Throughout pre-season it was 3-5-2 or 4-3-3. Team I would have played would have been Lee (if fit) McGinn Hird Evatt Donohue Mitchell Dimaio Weir O'Grady German Dennis RE: Wow ! - Devongone - 07-08-2017 Matt, I still worry about the vulnerability of Evatt and Hird without a tackler in front of them. As you say the friendlies suggested 3-5-2 and 4-3-3 on Saturday, so you are lining up an untried 4-4-2 too which suggests GC's getting to you nearly as much as he is to me. But I do think your team is interesting with German up front and O'Grady deeper. I think this left back right back stuff is largely bollocks. I'm more than happy with a right-footed left back. We have a collection of players I find almost impossible to coagulate into a convincing clot, but I'd have to seal the leaking artery of our defence to give the forwards a chance. But I still can't make any system I've heard of out of our players, so I've invented one. LEE BARRY HIRD MAGUIRE MCGINN EVATT MITCHELL DIMAIO REED DENNIS O'GRADY SUBS: GERMAN, UGWU, BREWSTER, SINNOTT, DONOHUE, WAKEFIELD, PARKIN, to be used tactically and positively to win games. Amongst the players we lack within the random bunch of players we call a squad is a proper defensive midfield player and a proper attacking midfielder who might notch 10-15 in a season like Danny Whitaker did. We also can't field proper wingers if we want, yet we do have centre forwards for wingers to feed......... Amongst the players we do have is a midfielder who gets tiredy, another who might be a bit of a Joey Barton and a keeper of dubious ability who if he plays will weaken the team and if he sits on the bench will block the development of a young keeper. We've dealt ourselves a hand full of consonants and the only vowel is U. I do think though that as O'Grady was always known as the workhorse of the Wednesday forward line there could be mileage in trying him deeper. After all he has spent 14 seasons up front, 8 clubs and 9 loans and never really returned many goals. Maybe he'd score just as many from deeper. RE: Wow ! - Dancingwilldoit - 07-08-2017 Lee isn't match fit or so the rumour mill has it. If its true god know why he's on the bench. If you drop Anyon after 1 game what does that do to his confidence? He couldn't do a deal about 2 of the goals but should have positioned himself better for the corner. If the players in front of him did a better job maybe he would feel more comfortable? What I don't understand is why he made Evatt club captain. Ok he's been a great player for us over the years but both him and Hird are just too slow. GC has made a rod for his own back there. Why not try Mcginn. Wiseman, Maguire, Donohue McCourt Hird Wier Reed Ogrady or Ugwu Dennis to start and bring on German last 20mins At least that back line has some speed about it and McGinn and Donoghue we all know can attack down the wings and get a cross in. With that midfield there's plenty of cover. RE: Wow ! - spireitematt - 07-08-2017 (07-08-2017, 20:38)Dancingwilldoit Wrote: Lee isn't match fit or so the rumour mill has it. I agree with that line up Dancing. (07-08-2017, 16:58)Devongone Wrote: Matt, I still worry about the vulnerability of Evatt and Hird without a tackler in front of them. Have to mix it up a bit Devon because if you play the same formation every game sooner or later the teams are going to cotton on and suss you out. 4-4-2 is a good formation especially for the most physical teams. RE: Wow ! - Devongone - 08-08-2017 I nearly like that team Dancing except Wiseman's career history suggests he has been moderate at centre back and best as a right back or wing back. Why we've got him Barry and McGinn I can't guess. The last two years we've had Anderson Syndrome, haven't trusted Hird with Evatt at centre back, thought Maguire was too young and we've covered with a loan. End of last season GC seemed to have convinced himself Maguire was ready. Then first match he goes Hird and Evatt that no one has trusted for two years .......... very odd. Did Maguire piss in DA's letterbox? The more I think my way into this team the more I get baffled. I can't see why we've got the players we've got - except for the full back overload, which is a form of Obsessive Compulsion. My only criticism of the Dancing team is that it might be the slowest team in the history of football. If Tommy isn't fit then he shouldn't be on the bench, but if he can do the current warm-up that keepers totally unnecessarily go through ...... he's fit. I wouldn't worry too much about Anyon's confidence. He's been tried and dropped everywhere he's played ........... I'm more worried about why we'd give a young keeper a contract then give him no way to improve. If the verdict on Tommy is that he is a long way short of his best (and if he isn't better than Anyon that really IS the case) and we don't think Parkin is good enough ....... we could be looking at a fourth keeper. Bear in mind that history tells us:- AN UNFIT TOMMY LEE = RELEGATION I'm beginning to think forget football and play this. Maybe Carson should play in goal, it's a popular name for keepers. McGinn Maguire Wiseman Donohue Barry Hird Reed O'Grady Ugwu German At least the defence would have plenty of outlets when they were in tight situations. I don't think Wednesday would expect it, but I'm not sure GC's expecting what's about to happen to us tonight. RE: Wow ! - Dancingwilldoit - 08-08-2017 Dev, I am sure that my team would pick up points and even win a few. Problem is its not me picking the team. Evatt, Barry, Dimaio, Brewster, Mitchell, German gives us a strong bench and if Lee isn't fit don't have him sat there, put another outfield player Ugwu or Ogrady on the bench. Nullify the opposition and you wont need a sub keeper. RE: Wow ! - Devongone - 08-08-2017 I agree Dancing, it is highly unlikely we need a sub keeper, but first team atmos against a big club might be good for Parkin. What's worrying is GC would be my fourth choice to select the team behind you, Matt and Pooch ....... I'm kind of expecting a sixth choice nineteen year old Premier League centre back secretly signed two hours before ko to emerge tonight alongside Sam Hird ......... RE: Wow ! - Dancingwilldoit - 08-08-2017 Line up tonight Anyon, Hird, Maguire, Barry, Wiseman, Ugwu, O'Grady, Dennis, Reed, McCourt & Donohue. Make of that what you will but at least German is on the bench RE: Wow ! - Dancingwilldoit - 08-08-2017 Serious question folks, does a penalty count as a shot on target in the game stats? |
